USC's mascot is the Trojans because of an article in a newspaper that said that USC kept fighting on in a game like the Trojans kept fighting in Troy, never giving up until it's over. So although the Trojans eventually lost the war, they didn't give up until the bitter end. It's that spirit that makes some schools choose Trojans for a mascot. That said, I've always thought it was an odd choice, even though I graduated from USC and I'm even wearing a shirt that says "TROJAN FOR LIFE" right now.
