A .700 career winning % with almost 150 wins and a career ERA in the mid 2.2s is pretty fucking insane

His entire career is almost identical to Maddux statistically from 92 through 98, which is by far the best stretch of his career.

Wins mean literally nothing. If we're going by ERA, let's just look at Maddux and the argument is null and void.

Same brain.

Maddux had a better ERA while half the league was juicing though.

No one said he was the goat, just that he was one of the greatest of all time

which means like top 10 in my book. And he's been amazing to watch his whole career, including tonight. I especially enjoyed his strike out of Altuve where Altuve was halfway to first trying to buy a walk as he got rung up.

Maddux also had a 1.143 career WHIP. Kershaw has 1.002

It's not fair to compare a complete career to an ongoing one in terms of overall quality, but at the current pace, Kershaw just looks statistically better.

Honestly though, you could make the case for like, 10 different pitchers being the GOAT. It's an unwinnable argument.

I always say Pedro. Nothing builds respect quite like hating a guy that much for that long just because of how great he was.

I'm a jackass who thinks Nolan Ryan is the GOAT pitcher

Pedro is a good pick though. I like that one more than Clemens who was also relevant in that era even though I haven't checked to see if the numbers back it up.

Yeah, this is what I was getting at. I think he's at the point where if he stopped playing tomorrow he'd still be top 10, and there is still no way we can be sure that he's even had his best year yet. He's head and shoulders above every active pitcher and as far as I can tell, the sky remains the limit for him.

Clemens is objectively the best ever in the live ball era by WAR, but roids.

IDK if heads and shoulders is right, Max Scherzer is very close to him.

Without counting, my gut feeling is that the NL is actually more represented if you remove the mass of Yankees fans

Even then, we've got fans of the Orioles, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mariners, Rangers, Royals, and Tigers on the board. We even have a fan of the Rays (swirldude) and A's (Icon) on this board.

I'm sure there's probably some AL match-ups in the postseason that would get almost no discussion in these topics. A hypothetical Twins/Angels match-up would cause this topic to go dead during the entire duration of the series.

Kershaw's career matches up to Koufax's prime as well, in a livelier era no less.

Koufax was great but very average for the first half of his career. He was only amazing for like 5 years.

Unless I missed it, I'm surprised that Wigs hasn't talked about the new Mets managerial hire.

Oops yeah I've been forgetting to discuss in here vs discord

Great hire. Supposed to be a smart analytical type. Worked really well with the CLE pitchers apparently and the Indians fans all seem to be sad he is leaving so good signs. In his presser he talked a lot about clubhouse morale and caring for the players as human and keeping them happy, etc. He actually kind of went overboard with that sentiment which I'm not sure what to make of. Over the last 3 years we haven't really had much in the way of external problems (except Harvey) until this year after a lot of the vets like Bruce/Walker/Grandy were traded and there were some more issues then. He also mentioned leadership was very valuable to him and wad closely in touch with Wright who even if he isn't playing much still is valued as a clubhouse presence and leader. He will be bringing on a new pitching coach and bench coach probs.
I hope our hitting coaches stick around because they are good but Kevin Long might want to manage and was interviewed by the Nats and a few others I think.

Callaway said he'd be reaching out to every player as first order of business and then he was going to "watch every single Mets game from 2017". May God have mercy on his soul but I admire the dedication. I watched almost every game, I only missed like 6!

Tldr smart move by the mets. No one seems to dislike the hire.

Also re the best pitcher argument really you guys need to delve into the past more. You got your Tom Seavers and Nolan Ryan's and Cy Youngs and Steve Carlton and Gaylord Perry and Walter Johnson etc... Kershaw, Randy Johnson, and Clemens are probably the only very recent ones who touch those kind of guys. Pedro too. Respect your history
