Anyway, it just kinda hit me that Arrieta is probably gone from the organization. I didn't really start watching baseball until my senior year of high school. Before that, I hadn't actively watched baseball since I was probably 11 or 12, and I was a Cubs fan back then. I went on a school trip for a club to Chicago, where we saw the Cubs play at Wrigley, my first and only time in the park. I guess that sort of rekindled my interest in the sport. But this was in 2012, and I think the Cubs lost over 100 games, so obviously I wasn't super into the team.
Anyway, I watched them progressively get better as they called players up and brought in players on trades. It was awesome to see this team grow in such a way, and it got me really interested in following minor leaguers, and trying to see who would make it up next. But one of the moves the office made was to acquire this mediocre pitcher named Jake Arrieta. Didn't really get it, but our starters at the time were all basically worthless, so I didn't mind it. Forget who we sent over for him anyway. So 2015 comes along and the Cubs start looking pretty damn good. You have a lot of good hitters up in the majors, and it's really exciting to watch, but there was never anything that made the elusive World Series seem certain. Enter the second half of 2015. Jake Arrieta's performance in the second half was a fucking blast to watch. He was completely and utterly annihilating everyone he faced, and seemed legit superhuman. He was, at that time, the best pitcher the sport had ever seen. Nigh untouchable with his stuff, and basically throwing automatic wins, assuming the offense or bullpen didn't blow it. I know some people itt were saying how it wasn't really that impressive, because it required so much luck and he was up against weaker competition, but until someone else lucks into that sort of zen-like state at any point while I'm alive, I can safely say they were just being dumb or jealous. Either way, Arrieta's performance helped lead us to the second WC where we inevitably burned out in the NLCS. Great run for what was meant to be a rebuilding year! Arrieta's performance in 2015 was the first time the possibility hit me. Yeah, you had all these prospects compiling together to create a brutal offense, but pitching is what ultimately got us that ring. And when Arrieta threw like that in 2015, I knew we'd be winning a WS soon. So it sucks to see him go. I think he was the first bit of magic that this team was able to taste before that 2016 campaign. I don't necessarily like him as a person, since he seems like a bit of an asshole, but as a player, I think he helped a lot of us Cubs fans see the light at the end of the tunnel. So thanks, Jake. Hope you end up some place that also has a bright future. I don't know how anybody can call Arrieta's second half run lucky with how long it went on. I'm not a Cubs fan (I do kinda consider them a second team though from my time spent in Chicago) but I did have him in fantasy for that run and it was amazing. His ERA was like 0.50 for entire half a season. I've never seen anything like it. It was like he was playing easy mode on a video game.

Just looked it up, in 12 starts after the ASB he went 11-0 with a 0.41 ERA. Jesus.

Throwing a cutter with his command and velocity from that season was always going to result in a pretty steep decline very quickly. Chris will tell you i mentioned this, he was never someone you wanted on a long term deal. Cubs would be wise to let him go, as would teams looking for more than a fringe #3 starter. He would be a good fit for a team like the Nats who need to win now before their window closes. Offer him 4 or 5 years and concede that you wont be contending at the end of the deal.
