Janine Hawkins has nice words to say about Original Sin 2:

https://www.polygon.com/2017/9/15/16316126/divinity-original-sin-2-review
From the very beginning Original Sin 2 feels wonderfully flexible. Players can customize their own characters (down to picking an instrument to highlight their personal soundtrack) or choose from several pre-made origins. Choosing an origin character doesn’t mean sacrificing any chance at customization, though. Players still have complete control over the origin character’s class, abilities and appearance, so there’s wiggle room even if you love a character concept but hate their weapon/hair/cannibalism-related clairvoyance.

Origin characters will become companions if they aren’t picked as the player character, meaning that their stories and the unique interactions they can have aren’t completely locked off. Better still, they offer players the option to influence their class when they do join up, so a party that’s already brimming with magic users can nudge a new companion in a different direction to fill a skill gap. It’s a good idea to take advantage of this, since a more diverse set of skills can ensure a party is ready to deal with anything.

And that’s incredibly valuable. A lot of different things can happen in Divinity: Original Sin 2; it’s an RPG that is overwhelmingly about planning ahead yet still being completely taken by surprise. A seemingly inconsequential conversation with someone can lead to them dropping dead from some unholy and unknown force. An arrow shot astray in a fight can cause an unrelated and cascading loop of fire, poison and electricity to render a nearby area completely impassable. A teleportation glove can lead someone too clever for their own good somewhere they’re absolutely not prepared to be.

This, however, is unfortunate. I had similar issues in the first game and hoped they would be ironed out.
Another notable cost of all this complexity is that it can be hell to stay on top of everything. While the game’s journal keeps track of updates to quests in what should be a very tidy and helpful way, many entries are vague to the point of uselessness. Others require very specific (and sometimes easily missed) triggers to be hit. I have multiple quests open at the moment stuck on steps that I’ve completed with no idea of how to advance them further.

Now that I think about it, yeah. For some reason it just seems really pronounced here. ALSO, it's been a long ass while since I played a Metroid game.

Having digested Pyre after marathoning it last night - aside from being a very good game which I'm sure has been talked about, it gave me one specific moment that felt like it should have been pre-scripted due to how much dramatic irony was involved - but that I know only came about due to my personal choices and complete happenstance. And not just choice in the terms of picking A or B to select your next cutscene - it was a long line of choices that culminated in that! I need more moments like that in games.

i'd like to read about this moment! the game is really good at setting up relationships with people that it feels like you're bound to have a special moment with the cast whatever choice you make, and of course you'll be making major ones with the characters that resonate with you the most.

I generally decided which of my crew to liberate long before I actually did the rite. For the 5th Liberation Rite, I had decided to send up Pamitha. I was very sympathetic situation, and while I'd brought into contact with her sister several times, they weren't able to patch things up. If anything, seeing her sister was making Pamitha feel worse. I felt like it would be good to get her out of the Downside - she had nothing left for her there.

So of course, I get to the rite location and I'm facing Tamitha's team. Went "...huh" and started second-guessing my choice. What would Pamitha feel like if I liberated her at the direct cost of her sister? Maybe I should free someone else first...but no, for all I knew there wouldn't be a next time for her. I stuck to the plan. After the sisters exchanged some words, the rite began. I started winning pretty easily.

Then Pamitha directly asks me to throw the match so that Tamitha could go up instead of her. It was a little heartbreaking and had me doubting my choice all over again. After seriously deliberating whether or not to throw the match, I decided that I simply couldn't do it. I wouldn't let Pamitha's self-loathing cost her the freedom I felt she deserved. Ended up winning the match via Pamitha diving into their pyre.

I was really worried about how Pamitha would feel about that, but when the time came for her to go up, she expressed nothing but gratitude. She had realized that our group genuinely cared for her, and it helped take the edge off of her self-loathing. Left the Nightwings as happily as I could have hoped for.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 closes in on 500k after its first weekend post-launch.
http://www.eurogamer.net/amp/2017-09-18-divinity-original-sin-2-roars-out-of-the-gates-to-nearly-500k-sold

Pretty good! The game only sold 42k in Kickstarter, so that's roughly 450k in full price sales over the last year. It did 140k after it came out of early access.

The polish and complexity in this game is mind-bogglingly impressive.

SteamWorld Dig 2 reviews are hitting. I think that might be out today, somewhere? Or maybe tomorrow. It has a weird release where different platforms are getting it on different days so I'm not sure what's going on. People have glowing things to say about it; sounds like another great five hour experience from that team.

ECHO came out on PC yesterday and it looks pretty cool! Sci-fi horror with a techno soundtrack.

Super Hydorah is out now on Steam, I think it's coming to some consoles as well this week.

If you never played the original version, I think it's still free on Locomalito's website. Really good horizontal shooter. After how many great free games the guy's put out I have no second thoughts about giving him full price for this one!

Spirit of Justice came out on phones, too, which I guess means I have to do a series replay again...

One thing I wish was a little more clear with Heat Sig is what counts as "alerted" because of those emergency shields guards can activate when alerted. Is it when the exclamation point above them is totally red, or the moment that it appears? Seems like the latter because I got some hits blocked that I thought should have been clear, but if that's the case then I don't understand what changes when the exclamation point turns all the way red.

I got through the first world in Mario v Rabbids and just lost interest. Like all I'm going to do is fight more rabbids with new powers I have to deal with, and incrementally update my skills and weapons, and then unlock new abilities to repeat old worlds to unlock stuff. It was fun but just not compelling. I almost feel like doing Easy Mode to rip through the game. I guess I'd say it's like a 6.5/10 type of game that doesn't really have major flaws? something like that.

that's kinda what I was worried about. I brushed it off because XCOM 2 came out the same day, and that's more my speed. people who progressed further in Kingdom Battle say it gets more complex though, so it might be something I'll try when it's on sale.

It could be that Mario Rabbids gets more interesting. I guess the trigger for me was the multi-layer puzzles. At the end of the first world, you unlock an ability to slide boxes around. Those boxes are part of puzzles, so the game is very clear that you'll need to backtrack and revisit areas. And then in the second world, I moved a box only to see it blocked by a different obstruction that can't be cleared until I complete the second world. And then the next battles just felt similar to the first world's battles.

So yeah maybe like Raydyn says I should put it down for a bit and pick it up in a week or so.
