...or it would have been 3000 dollars.

These were all rares and bulk from the first three sets of Pokemon (first editions for many). Guy at least one of everything in each set and more to boot.

BUT

He had written his initials in the corner of every card.

This sounds like eps of pawn stars I've seen where people will bring in old cars and have had them all decked out with powerful engines, and fail to grasp that the value comes from collectors wanting it, and that they've ruined that value by tricking them out.

I can understand writing your name on a cartridge if you're a kid. You probably never even thought that you would resell it.

I didn't refuse some of the higher dollar cards because they still had some value, but they were extremely diminished.

It's probably not a surprise to anyone here that Magic cards come in great condition for resale, but Pokemon and YGO are just flat out destroyed constantly. I'm amazed that first edition cards don't go for even more exorbitant prices. Magic cards always come in sleeved and virtually undamaged, but Pokemon always looks like it's been through a war zone.

Some of the foiled rares were still valuable enough even in that condition for me to sell. I probably won't sell them any time soon, so the guy ended up making off with like $40 total.

I have a binder somewhere with like some of the cards from the first set. not really sure how many of them are first edition. I just remember after I got a bunch of cards I tried to put one card of each Pokemon into a binder together. so it's like one copy of each card (of the ones I had).

The smart money in card gaming is in Magic. Even new stuff can go for 50 bucks a card.

Remember that, at the heart of Pokemon (and Magic, etc.), there is a game. So the cards that aren't playable or are obsolete sell worse. Magic has done a great job of keeping cards relevant with Commander, for example. Pokemon has introduced EX and torpedoed the value of older sets.

Yeah this is the biggest contrast I see in the 2 games. With Magic, the older cards are always going to be the most powerful to ever exist, and the power has decreased over time. The older formats, while not exactly well-off right now, at least have a reason to go back and play them. With pokemon, the opposite has happened, where HP and damage numbers have gone up. This means that older formats are nonexistant because, well, why would I want to go back and use a less powerful charizard? Like you could just use a standard deck in an extended tournament and roflstomp, where in magic if you used a standard deck in even a modern tournament, you would get laughed out the building.

I wouldn't sell them because of sentimental value, but I had full sets of the first 7 or 8 sets, all (besides, unfortunately, the first set) first edition.

I assumed the value tanked-- maybe I should sell off these pokemon cards.

Also have a non first edition Charizard along with a bunch of other rares. Any of that stuff valuable or is first edition a must?

Out of curiosity

What level of fame does a celebrity have to be for them to do the same thing, but the cards retain equal or higher value.

I can imagine a number of people that would make it go up, but am interested to know who would lead to judgement calls.

Well if the celebrity's autograph was more valuable than the card, that would help.

But generally speaking, only a card's artist would do that. Or in Magic, anything signed by MaRo.

So looking at base set through fossil on TCG Player my take on the value of early set Pokemon cards was about correct.

Homeboy must have had a lot of cards or they must've mostly been First Edition.

Well if you're selling in bulk the store is generally a lot easier. Yeah you get less money overall, but you save on a ton of effort and the shipping and it's not like ebay isn't taking a cut as well.

If I had just say 14 Charizards, though. Yeah, Ebay is better for those at least. Piecemeal them and the singles that go for around $20+ and sell the rest in bulk to the store.
