they should have done Nier Automata straight so that one handed could be a cool twist in later years. this game's been out like 3 months

Metroid Prime's run is bringing back nostalgia, aw yeah.

FF7's run will be long and I won't be paying tons of attention to it, but I think placing it on a Friday night after the Super Metroid race is smart. If it doesn't work, they don't have to take a risk like this again.

hey, speedrunning people, i'd like some advice

i have anxiety and part of that is having issues watching other people -- non-professionals, namely -- talk in non-professional situations. anything that can be defined as cringe , really. so for me, watching video of people playing on the internet can occasionally make me uncomfortable. in addition to that, i've never really been that interested in speedrunning

but so many people are, and so many people love it, and so i decided i'd look at the schedule and pick out a couple segments i'd try to watch this year. anybody with knowledge of this stuff know if these look like fun runs to watch? like would these illustrate how neat speedrunning can be for a first timer?

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2
1001 Spikes
SUPERHOT
Clustertruck

Those are just games I like and that are interesting to me. I'm open to suggestions for something that might be definitively cool.

oh don't worry, you're definitely not alone there. i can't stand to watch more than 5-10 seconds of any video of a person on the internet playing a video game and commenting on it. it's unbearably cringey for me. I have to close out.

the speed running community is awful for a lot of that stuff. I put up with the marathons but they're not great. anything let's playish I have to turn off almost immediately.

there are bright spots but you have to look for it. there are definitely games that don't need voices to be great, but a lot of those are the simpler, 2dish stuff and you seem a little more modern.

A lot of GDQ is extremely cringy, from social awkwardness of the runners to bad jokes from everybody to mistakes made in game. Honestly, you should look for good, old runs to see if you can bear them. You run a good risk of stumbling into a horrowshow if you go in blind (though some runners are probably pretty safe).

I'm not sure if you'd like the greatest run in GDQ history; Bonesaw messed up Jak and Daxter and GDQ standards in pretty much every conceivable way, and every second was glorious.

May he live on forever in our hearts.

It depends because even if you like agame some of the runners and commentators just arent great

Like I love fire emblem but Gwimpage is a bit hard to listen to

SpikeVegeta is great with whatever he involved in though

Guacamelle was pretty good, good commentary, explained the tech pretty well, some humor that wasnt inside jokes or anything, pretty good run I would say

I wish the schedule included who was going to be on the couch commentating for the run, because when it comes to reduce the potential cringe (as digi said he'd like to avoid) it really comes down to having a good couch that is familiar with talking through game play.

Spike Vegeta has already been mentioned, and he is really good at this. In addition to being gifted at being the guy doing the most talking without being boring when he's on the couch, he also studies and runs a LOT of different games so his knowledge of the games he's talking about is often very good.

Blechy is another frequent commentator who can take what would otherwise be a mediocre run and make it humorous and informative. He also knows intricate details about a ridiculous number of games.

The time you have the most issues is when you get the couch where they all really only know the one game and they are novices when it comes to having an audience. Sometimes that can make for a really skillful run, but other times you'd want to trade the best runner of a game, for the 2nd or 3rd best runner who also has some social skills.

I think that most of the communities tend not to foster people who have really good speaking skills because usually most speedruns don't have people talking really clearly and professionally over the runs. One of the nice things about Necrodancer is that because we do so many casts of races, we have a ton of players who can do really credible commentary at GDQ - I've had a ton of practice myself talking about a game and I think I could commentate a GDQ run a lot better as a result. People generally just aren't that practiced at doing it though, so they kind of get let's-playish with it (which is extremely hit or miss) instead of really describing the game to a captive audience.

Anyway if you want to avoid cringy commentary the best bet is to watch the most mainstream runs, since those tend to have the best of the best. I would place my bets on the Mario relay for instance - the relay runs have had very good commentary in the past and there are like hundreds of people who could talk about Mario, so whoever commentates it will definitely know what they're doing. Super Metroid is another good bet although it was... uh, bad at last gdq. I echo the sentiment about Blechy's commentary being really anti-cringe too. But yeah it's hard to say without knowing who's going to commentate everything. I'm not tapped in enough to know. I would just bet on the big names as your best bets for avoiding awkward commentary if that really ruins it for you. Generally speaking GDQ has gotten better about this each year - feels like people take commentary more and more seriously
