My girlfriend got me into Voyager, and it's freaken awesome. Love the Emergency Medical Hologram, episodes revolving around him are the best(especially the day dream episode, that was amazing). She told me the original sucks because of Shatner's acting, so which ones are worth checking out and which ones are duds?

Pretty much everything except Voyager and the new movie reboots.

Actually Voyager isn't that bad, just Janeway.

Even if you hate him, avoiding the original series because of Shatner is really a disservice to everyone else that isn't Shatner. Same as avoiding Voyager because of Janeway would be a bad choice because, as you noted, other characters like the EMH are great.

Hi TC!

Finally a topic I can get behind haha. I am a huge huge Trek fan and can point you in the right direction:

Deep Space Nine: All 7 seasons are great. Worf from TNG joins the cast in S4. There is a prolonged war with the Dominion over many years, and the show's secondary cast is the best of all Trek. This show has the Defiant. Pulse phasers, ablative armor, cloaking device. 'Nuff said. There are many religious overtones but you're not really beat over the head with it. This is my favorite Trek series and probably the one that has aged the best.

Next Generation: Seasons 3-6 are excellent, with the series peaking in season 4. Captain Picard and Data steal the show but everybody not named Troi or Crusher is good too. Miles O'Brien started on TNG before he went to DS9 as a main cast member. TNG is hard to watch from the beginning (unlike DS9) because the first season is abysmal. S1 and S3 are like night and day. When I rewatched TNG with my daughter we started with S3 (barring 'Q Who' from S2 which is... very important later in the show).

Voyager: Had the best premise BY FAR however never really did much with it. Overall the writing quality is all over the place with a few standout episodes and a ton of turds. This show had the weakest first officer in Chakotay and that hurt the series. The best characters are the Doctor, Tuvok, and Seven of Nine later. Voyager also has the 'distinction' of watering down and overusing the Borg.

Enterprise: Sort of sucked. I could never get into it though I tried a lot. Trip is the only good character though T'Pol and Hoshi are good to look at (I guess?) lol

The Original Series: The holy triumvirate of Kirk, Spock, and Bones is unmatched. Kirk famously overacts in every scene but he's still awesome. Spock is probably the best character of all Trek overall. Bones is definitely the best doctor, he's a badass. Some of the best episodes are in season 1, which is strange since it's usually the weakest season for future Trek shows (especially TNG, yuck).

Speaking of great doctor episodes try Living Witness and Doctor Tinker Tenor Spy.

Left her to go be with the woman I love and my future daughter. What has she even been saying about me? Someone messaged me saying that she's been asking him about me.

Thanks for the suggestions, I gotta check out the original if it has a doctor even better than Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram. Btw, is the hatred for Janeway common? I kind of didn't like her at first, but she's been growing on me.

Pretty much everything up until Voyager is great. I will say that the original series tends to deviate the most from the rest of them, but is still worth a watch, especially since it is the shortest at only 79 episodes.

I'd never admit to it, because I have a reputation as a hater to uphold, but I could begrudgingly say she was less intolerable as the series progressed. That could simply be the quality of the other characters, though.

She started making more logical decisions and stopped trying to self destruct the ship all the time.

Seven backfired on Berman and co and turned out to be a good character. But yeah it was a total T&A ratings move all the way.

TGN is my favorite. I avoided Voyager for years because of lies people told me. Voyager has very solid episodes, I just don't relate to the characters as much as the original and TGN. I've only watched a few episodes of Deep Space 9 and they were just OK. Never watched enterprise or the new reboots. The original is very good too. The original/TGN movies are worth watching too.

Overall a very solid franchise with a few missteps.

Right sexism is the ONLY reason people could dislike Voyager. It has nothing to do with terrible writing, one-dimensional characters, poor acting and a completely wasted premise. It must be sexism.

I Iove the original series -- and the movies, up to a point, but this is a topic about the TV series -- and swaths of The Next Generation. I could not get into Deep Space Nine and (especially) Voyager. Poor Enterprise had potential, but ... no.

You know something I never understood, in Voyager, they said the Mark 1 EMH (of which The Doctor is) was removed from all Federation installments and ships because people complained it was "rude", but that's incredibly pompous of people to complain about considering what a ridiculous medical genius the EMHs are despite their personality.

The Doctor was using his combined medical knowledge to create new and effective cures even early in his activation time.

It's actually ridiculous that they aren't using the EMH units in place of normal doctors since they are so much more skilled than a normal doctor could possibly be.

But no, people were upset because they were "rude" and refused to use them as a result.

TOS is a product of it's time so it's hit or miss but if you want to relive it then feel free to do so, some of the movies are kinda meh however, you could just jump directly to the movies if you don't have the time.

TNG is easily the best and a timeless classic, the only rough parts is the first season or so before they ramped up the production values and any episode revolving around Dianna's mother, though I don't think Worf's son is so bad. The movies from this are all shit though (and get progressively worse but the second is a favourite because of space zombies), they're all just stereo-typical action movies with a sci-fi theme using the setting of TNG.

DS9 is good for a change of pace with a very different but enjoyable focus with plenty of excellent episodes, my only gripe about it is the whole Micheal Bay thing they have going on where more explosions means a better show.

Voyager is a great series with a different cast that is still enjoyable but not as good as the two former ones, it's certainly watchable and has one of the best characters ever, yet, one of the worst at the same time.

How many are "worth watching" depends on how much you like Star Trek in general, but some are better than others. I recommend starting with TOS and TNG. If you were introduced to it through Voyager, watch some TNG and then some TOS. These two form the foundations of the franchise. If you like those, definitely watch DS9. If you still want more Star Trek, watch the VOY and ENT and the movies. The best movies are 2, 4, 6, and First Contact. Overall, what is "worth watching" is really dependent on how much you want more Start Trek after you watch the best.

If you want to go TNG, here are some random episodes off the top of my head that will give you a good idea on how great it was:

Who Watches the Watchers?
Cause and Effect
The Pegasus
The Survivors
Darmok
Q Who?
Yesterday's Enterprise
The Wounded
Clues
The Offspring
Deja Q
Matter of Honor
Frame of Mind
Chain of Command 1&2
The Most Toys
Preemptive Strike
The Inner Light

--

There are also a great couple episodes featuring Worf and his discommodation within the Klingon home world with the Duras family. I can't remember the names though.

And these but they are spolierific:

Voyager only makes sense if you accept that Janeway is bipolar an Tuvok and the EMH are covering for her condition.

Best episode in all of trek though is DS9 s6e19 In the Pale Moonlight.

Episode 1:

"This is the Captain speaking. We must uphold the Prime Directive at all costs! This is still a Starfleet vessel!"

*10 minutes later*

*Has killed a member of a just discovered race and started a war between 2 others*

And Janeway is far from the only character in the 24th century to have mental illness. Troi would be out of a job otherwise...

I'm only on the 2nd season for my viewing, but my girlfriend showed me a bunch of episodes from seasons 4, 5, and 6. My questions is, why did they get rid of the actual good alien character(Kes or w/e her name is) and keep the annoying Neelix? I want to strangle the shit out of him Everytime he gets any screen time.
