HanOfTheNekos 04/12/17 8:58:32 PM #1:	Come one, come all and join us in creating a community for D&D one shots here at our very own Board 8! Han, what is this? Simply put, I want to bring Board 8ers together into a community where we can play a bunch of D&D together. By making it based on one-shots (single session stories), we can have a wealth of DM's, players, and stories without needing the usual commitment that a D&D campaign requires! Low commitment? What does that mean? It means you can put in as little/much time as you want to! Usually, a one-shot takes 3-4 hours, though it can vary. If you only have time to play one session a year, then that's perfect! If you want to try DMing but are worried about the crazy commitment a DM takes to run a campaign, then that's perfect! The point of this is accessibility. People like playing D&D, but it's often hard to get a group together and make time. This makes that hurdle significantly easier to hop! I've never played D&D before, can I play? By golly yes! In fact, I already have plans for some one-shots aimed for new players! Some DM's might prefer their players to be a little more seasoned (for example - a spellcasters only episode), but there will be plentiful opportunity for new players! I want to DM. What do I need to do? 1. Express desire to DM a session. 2. Post a short synopsis advertising your session, perhaps including plot teaser and unique character restrictions. 3. Collect player interest in topic. 4. ???? 5. Profit! What edition/system are we using? This is really up to the DM's discretion, as some people are preferential~~attached at the hip~~ towards certain systems. People like me might advertise and encourage 5e due to its ease of use, and consistency would likely help with the topic, but if you want to run a SCIENCE adventure using Atomic Robo, by all means try! How do we plan to play? The key to one-shots is brevity - a self-contained story/adventure that can fit into a few hours. In my experience, playing by text is incredibly slow. Some people can work it, but playing by voice is probably going to be standard. Some DM's may want to use roll20.net, some may use Google Excel sheets for battlemaps, some might not require anything other than imaginations and speaking. Also, playing through voice chats allows us to record and post sessions here for others perusal. Record? Are you trying to turn this into some kind of podcast!? If people are ok with that, then yes! I'd love for people to get to listen to the stories that happened in sessions they missed. After all, turning this into an anthology of wacky Board 8 adventures that can be kept for posterity is the dream! I'm not very comfortable with RPing/speaking a lot. What do? Some sessions might lend themselves better to you than others. After all, if someone wants to run a session where you're on some kind of dating show, then not being much of an actor would probably mean you have less fun. Some DM's might want to run combat heavy sessions though. The point is - do what you are comfortable with. DM's should take stuff like this into account with their advertising. Are there plans for continuity? That is ultimately up to the DM's. It would be cool to have callbacks to sessions that have happened, or characters occasionally making multiple appearances, but in general, we want to keep this limited to one-shots. Some DM's might run similar themes, or two+-shots, and that's ok. Some might want to run sessions with level 20's destroying the world. We'll go the Star Wars route and call that the "Legends" collection. During this tournament, you will work with other competitors to survive, but ultimately knowing that only one will succeed. Your combat prowess will be tested against the greatest of enemies, but in the end, one mortal will stand triumphant over the rest. Will it be you? Character Creation: - 8th Level characters - Point buy of 25 for stats - Everyone's Charisma stat starts at 18 - Character must be adult, but not old for their race; no monstrous races - Only mundane weapons/armor There will be some moderate RPing in this session. It will not be a main focus, but players are encouraged to have some defining personality characteristics that make their character unique. In fact, I am a Venture-Lieutenant in the Pathfinder Society which is basically an organized play setting with its own rules and some continuity but is in general a series of one shots. You can take your character (or characters) between adventures. Every 3 adventures you get to level. Each adventure takes like 4 hours. I am authorized to share published scenarios with anyone who is interested in GMing without having to do any of the pesky writing. The Society is something akin to like the Royal Geographic Society - a group of loosely associated ideologues, explorers, architects, profiteers, and academics gathered in the biggest city in the world to share their findings and pool their resources. One of the Venture-Captains who run the society, an old doddering man by the name of Drandle Dreng, offers just such a job for newer members that involves meeting him and running around town doing his errands - but surely it won't be that simple?
