You can have the guy who is both the best (or at least right on par with the best) and acknowledged as the hardest worker in the company spend the last decade of his life dedicated to being as good as he possibly can at being an in-ring competitor...be unable to beat a guy who spent 7 years not caring about wrestling at all and has only really had it above "afterthought" on his list of priorities for the past six weeks or so. They've already shown very little trust in him, as his storyline has been relegated to the third most important on his own show. If Cena loses, Punk gets more time to try and impress upon the fans and the WWE that he can legitimately carry the company ala Cena. If Cena wins, he's going to win the title at the next PPV, and he's probably going to hold it for a while.
