Riolu's name is simply Lucario's name with the last two syllables placed in the front and the ca part taken out altogether.

Its name probably comes from Lupaster, a subspecies of the Canis Aureus, the Egyptian Jackal. Lucario's name possibly derives also from part of a Japanese spelling of oracle or orichalcum in reverse, reflecting its mythical design, its ability to see into the supernatural, and its Steel-type. It may also refer to Cairo, Egypt. The word pharaoh may also be involved. Also, it may be derived from the Greek word lykos meaning "wolf".

Maybe, the mane is a bit weird. I think it's mostly the fact that it's bipedal, though.
