The spinoff books outside of the first one (which was merely bad but hey what did you expect) were already ****ing terrible. One literally had an action scene that was basically described as 'he walked through the station, taking cover where he had to and shooting the enemies when it was safe to slowly pick them off. Then he reached the docking bay'

The issue here is that since Drew Karpyshyn, one of the lead writers for the series, penned the first three books BioWare went ahead and deemed them canonical. Ditto with the comics from Mac Walters, which were all worse except the more recent stuff, which is surprisingly passable.

Now this fourth book from freelance author William C. Dietz, who Halo diehards will remember for completely f***ing up the Halo: CE novelization, gets treated as canon as well. Then the problem arises that the Google document some of us crafted will bear witness to: there are like a hundred mind-blowingly stupid canonical inconsistencies at play here.

...to say nothing of the fact that it's truly one of the worst books I've ever read, but hey, we can't win 'em all.

Hey guys, been a long time (bit of a running gag there as the vets well know).

Just thought I'd pop in for this thread considering my rather... erm, close affiliation with the movement to get this trainwreck removed form canon. Yeah, I realize how nerdy it all sounds and I'm perfectly fine with that.

Anyway, as proof, here's the 11k+ topic I started that got fans together to craft that Google document:
http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/9070774

You'll notice it just recently got locked. Why? Well because BioWare likes to minimalize sales loss, really, but more to-the-point, because we just received an official response:
http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/9150901

So yeah, there you have it. I'm really proud to have played such a big part in this, but make no mistake: it was entirely a collaborative effort across dozens of fans and also the wiki base -- damn, they were pissed. You know how they can be. Trying to fit "Deception" into the canon is like... it's like... it's like impossible, okay man?

Pretty glad to see that we kinda-sorta won, too. I'd rather the whole thing be forgotten, but seeing them scramble for an extensive rewrite is pretty gratifying.

There's nothing inherently wrong with work-for-hire or tie-in fiction. One of America's best living authors wrote a Predator book. Tobias Buckell, a very talented writer, wrote a Halo book. Occasionally, companies will put talented people behind these projects. Admittedly, that's fairly rare, and most cases of tie-in fiction are simply cash grabs. But hey! Not always!

Well Karpyshyn is definitely better at writing video games than he is at writing novels. I don't think I've ever met anyone who has claimed otherwise. But in my opinion, the first three books were actually OK. Not... prize-winning, but OK.

The Halo books are pretty lame. I only read the first 3, and I think...one of them was OK?

I haven't read any others besides Mass Effect, though. The first one stars Saren and Anderson pre-ME1 and is pretty cool in that sense. The 2nd and 3rd books (and 4th apparently) are more tied together, and aren't as good IMHO, though they do have some interesting characters that I would have liked to have seen in the games.

Well, one of the major book-only characters will indeed be making an appearance in ME3, at any rate. And The Illusive Man and Aria are two ME2-introduced characters that were originally introduced in a book and a comic respectively, if you want to get uber-technical about things.

True.

Who's making an appearance?

I remember that one of the new party members was originally called something Sanders, but I thought they changed that (and I couldn't figure out how that made sense). I haven't been keeping up with the news very much, trying to minimize spoilers.

Since the first novel was released long before the game, Saren and David Anderson were both introduced in books as well. Possibly a few other people who showed up in Revelation and then the games, but I can't recall anyone specific off the top of my head.

Also, there are some really good books based on games. Not many, I'll admit, although there are plenty that are enjoyable if not exactly great literature (the ME books included). The ones based on Myst are superb. And some of the Wing Commander novels are surprisingly good too.

Clearly this won't affect it if it's so far gone from the existing canon. Bioware has the real writers of the story, and they can ignore the book if they want.
