I've seen topics with people talking about lava levels (not in awhile at least) and others complaining about water/escort levels, but I rarely see people talking about snow-based levels. Great ones that come to mind for me are...

- Freeezeeezy Peak (Banjo-Kazooie)
- Cool Cool Mountain (SM64)
- Practically every level in Snow Land in Kirby's Epic Yarn

Planet Freon - Ristar

Both stages are good, but the first is really good. Probably my favorite snow level in any game.

Sonic 3's Ice Cap isn't bad either.

Hailfire Peaks wins by virtue of being both the best ice and lava level, or at lest one of the best. Other really good ice levels that I can think of are Cool Cool Mountain in SM64 (only because of the slide), and whatever the Ice level was in Majoras Mask was.

They're pretty amazing.

I wouldn't really recommend their snow levels though... But otherwise I pretty much agree with everything in this topic. I don't want to reiterate, so here's a couple others:

Storm Peaks has already been mentioned, but really, all of Northrend counts. Even the parts like Scholazar with barely any snow to speak of. The best are definitely Storm Peaks and Icecrown though. The word "epic" gets thrown around a lot, but it definitely fits those two.

My personal favourite in gaming though, is World 5 from Yoshi's Island, or to be specific, 5-3. Dat skiing level. Definitely one of my most replayed levels out there.

Phendrana Drifts is the obligatory mention; I'm also a huge fan of the entire snowy area in Paper Mario. Yoshi's Island's snowy areas are also done right as well as Kirby's Epic Yarn's, and although they're obnoxious to go through the snowy routes in Pokemon DPP have great atmosphere and music. Cool Cool Mountain in SM64 is also amazing.
