Well, the article makes it sound like it's not like he's just quitting from game design period, he's just kind of taking more of a background role. This is what I was expecting to happen soon anyway.

Im not saying that Im going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position. What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself"
For the better, imo. He has been kind of 'ehhh' these past few years in regards in some design choices, some worked out well, some didn't. I'm interested in seeing what this 'newer' generation of devs can produce.
Heh, that site is fishing for hits. What he's actually planning to do sounds very interesting. I wonder if the 5-year cycle for SS (TP took years as well) caused him to step back and reevaluate.

Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.
or maybe handheld chibi zelda

It will launch for $350 with some Wii Sports s***. I bet my life on it. Damn, that KoolAid guy is awesome - NGamer64
Basically he's not going to work on anything like Zelda or Mario anymore. Just smaller things. Then actual retirement.

this falls in line with the recent Aonuma interview saying the Wii U Zelda will finally be his own Zelda and not just small changes of the past formula

"mwahahaha I finally rid of the old man time for Majora's Mask 2 with voice acting and blood"
Yeah, this makes sense; I wasn't under the impression that he was having much effect when he was spread so thin and not interested in most of the projects.

Cats land on their feet. Toast lands peanut butter side down. A cat with toast strapped to its back will hover above the ground in a state of quantum indecision
Honestly, I've been expecting this for quite a few years now, and IIRC there has been talk of it before. But to see it actually come to fruition is pretty disheartening. :-\

plus it's not like people were thrilled with Nintendo's current direction, so if Miyamoto did retire I don't think it would be a huge deal. Kojima would be a bigger deal.
We all love Shiggy, but is it not time for some new blood over at Nintendo? Especially with the Wii U coming, they need people who understand the current gen.
