How about just a majority. If a majority of players don't trust you then that's a probleem.

Also it isn't a 'fact.' We just need to find people who want to dedicate that time to a project.

Problem is that everybody who's willing to put time in has a different vision. I'm in, so are you, and blood loss would kill us both from butting heads with each other constantly. You can create an admin team that is full of conflicting viewpoints and run the game successfully, but you can't design a game with a broken team.

PS: Also, I went with 2/3+1 because I feel it will reduce the odds of an irrevocable decision happening due to a random whim of the playerbase. Majority can work too but I feel like one bad call could get a worthwhile admin kicked out with that system.

Removing an admin would always be a last resort option. If they're facing a vote of confidence in the first place, they probably aren't a 'worthwhile' admin.

Alright, so, Mercs 4 is definitely underway.

The current planning team is HGR, Kaonashi, Lopen, meisnewbie, and myself. As HGR said, we're reworking the game from the ground up. We don't know what systems will change and which ones will remain in place, but we're working on it. We feel that, at this moment, this five person team is diverse and intelligent enough to come up with a workable system to make mercenaries fun again while addressing the speed of the game, the power scaling of the top teams, and other such major issues, to make the game fun and balanced to the best of our abilities.

If you have any ideas, or problems you'd like to see addressed down the line, please e-mail them to [email protected] and we'll be happy to take them under consideration.

We agree that the game needs to take an extended break, and so don't expect to hear from us anytime soon, but know that we are planning, and this next game is going to be properly planned and balanced.

I think Mercs is a game that is brilliant in concept, but ultimately doomed to a flawed execution. I would love to be proven wrong here, but after watching six years and three versions all become infected and wither -- for both different and chronically recurring reasons, from actions of admins and players -- I've become jaded to that ever happening.

If for no other reason, if a next Mercs has to exist, make it succeed so you can throw it in my face. Otherwise I'll be here (or come back here) in 2014 to say "I told you so."

This all being said, I had my fun with Mercs. Given two years I'll probably hold the same nostalgia for M3 that I do for M1. They did both have their moments, we have to admit.

Like 50% of the problems in M3 could have been resolved with a catch-all 'We reserve the right to adjust things on the fly if things are stupid' rule. I'm sure that would lead to whining, but it would prevent situations like people abusing the ability time limits to delay the game for weeks at a time

On that note, the idea that both opponents had to be online at the same time before a match could be posted was incredibly stupid. There was a method set up for sending arguments. Should have been, 'If you don't use that method within blah blah amount of time, match goes up anyway, sucks for you'

Finished Drak's journal.

I will clarify two things:

1. Me and KP conspiring against numbers (that you mention in the epilogue) was just incidental. I was actually just out to hand all the big teams losses whenever I could. It was my early game strategy-- and I think it helped stem the tide of the misconstructed infra system just a bit so it became less obvious that the system was flawed. In fact, I think the infra system works if the top teams are constantly getting challenged-- but that's not really possible for one man to do.

2. I wasn't a double agent in the endgame conspiracy. I didn't actually tell numbers or KJH anything official about any conspiracies, but it's not like they couldn't "figure it out" anyway. Personally, I lost all interest in it once numbers, KJH, and Wang quit and only feigned interest so I'd get my owed Ilya use. Then once you persisted in maintaining the conspiracy, it no longer became about toppling Wang's favored sons, but rather about getting you to win. Which, of course, was the real point all along for you, but I had no interest in that. So I decided to turn on you, because your conspiracy turned boring.

Incidentally, even after your "conspiracy turned boring" I still had no real problem with you or your methods to win. Manipulation is perfectly fine and within the rules of the game, even if I frown upon it when COMBAT is another option. It was only after I truly absorbed vote patterns for a while, that I realized that you were overstepping the bounds between scheming and well, pretty much cheating. Certain people were showing up and voting just to vote for your team or against Dante/Chris, with borderline absurd rationale at times, and you had Twilight and Silver in your pocket, and etc etc. At that point, I became bitter towards your team and was actively rooting against it. Mind you, this was after my win in the round robin-- that stuff before that fight was theatrics.

That being said, I don't think it ever really influenced my voting, as I didn't think any of the matches you were in with KJH's team were particularly close (I thought your first match when Chris was at the helm was more debatable than the one you actually won by a long shot, actually-- which is part of the reason FFD's claim of "I intentionally abstained in certain matches I thought KJH would win" doesn't really fly with me cause the final match was less close to me-- I personally think he just missed the topics and/or didn't bother to vote because the team he'd vote for was behind). However, I don't deny that I would've done exactly what FFD claims he did, and ignore the match if I thought you'd win it-- if only to counteract Silver's vote which at that point I was 100% convinced was a joke. (FFD, for the record, is only at about like 80%-- that still makes him a liar in my books, though.)

Although I'm a bit less respectful of FFD's votes now having read everything. Seems to me he was still going all out with maintaining the conspiracy crap after the game was shattered and numbers, KJH, and Wang were gone because "???" rather than troll voting, which makes him no better than Silver-- the only difference is his votes were somewhat less absurd so it's possible his votes were legitimate. 20% possible, by my math.

Anyway, fun read. Really makes me nostalgic for the early days of mercs, and wishing admins, and later, the players, hadn't turned it into a joke. Of course, the parts with me in them were the best (owning Chris two days in a row after he sought vengeance... unashamedly cheating Gen-- and now knowing it interfered with your plans!... so good), but I got a kick out of other things like GANON's Oil Ocean shenanigans too.

And just to clarify since I think you took some of my opposition to you a bit more personally than expected-- I believe you were like "you legitimately hate me" or some crap-- you're still a cool guy in my books, Drakeryn. And I don't place the blame for rigged voting exclusively on you. I legitimately think you wanted to play within the rules of voting, and then certain parties involved couldn't distinguish what the difference between a game conspiracy and a voting conspiracy is. And of course, your rallying probably didn't help matters, but yeah.

What a mouthful.

I wasn't here for most of the endgame so I can't claim to know the specifics, but what Lopen is saying has a good chance of being true. Even if it isn't intentional scum voting, you get influenced by stuff. Maybe I'd be more inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt if several people hadn't admitted to me after I quit that they probably did let outside influences influence their vote, but yeah.

Really, that's one of the biggest problems with Mercs, if not the biggest. You can't have a game where the players decide who wins. If you want Mercs to succeed, you need to bring in outside votes. The second-biggest problem is obscure Mercs, and the third-biggest problem is that 5 v 5 teams suck. Either make it Mercs 1 craziness or shrink the team size. 5 v 5 is too complicated to get casual people to vote. Just throwing my two cents out there.

M1 always involved people discounting half the teams and focusing on like four to five people anyway. Something like 3v3 and you can't use the same mercs on consecutive days might work with considerable tweaking.

It's a psychological thing. The difference between someone looking at 6 characters duking it out in a topic title and 10 is huge. And then when you've never even heard of some of those 10, why would you even bother to go vote?

Really, I never got the point of trying to 'represent' obscure series in Mercs. It isn't a popularity contest. Unless they have really cool, really unique abilities that no one else does (most obscure mercs didn't), there's no point not to just keep drawing from a more-popular series if possible. People having to do research on multiple members of your team to vote is terrible for votes.
