Welcome to another round of the Best OST Contest, where we decide the best game soundtrack by voting on the songs in it.
Condensed rules and guidelines: * You must listen to both songs in the match. Use the provided links. * You must vote on the songs in the match. Not the game's overall music. Not how much you like the game itself. ***VOTE ON THE SONGS*** * To help enforce rule 2, All votes must be given for the song title, not the game or the seed number. No exceptions. * Normal contest rules apply about alts, rallying, multi-voting, etc. * No mid-thread tallies, please. * Matches run 24 hours from when they start. Discussion thread: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/60522913 Spreadsheet of all participants and the songs they will use each round: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoS8GGHS9FDGdFprRGpQa3ZtRGcwTTM5VTQ2SWViUGc&hl=en_US Winner's Bracket: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=410364&tclass=Winner%27s%20Bracket Previous results: a. Searching for Friends didn't have to look to hard for an answer to Whisper of the Crystal. Final Fantasy VI advances, 21-6. b. However, the Search for the Secret Spell was not as successful in finding its objective, as clearly it wasn't in the Magmoor Caverns. Metroid Prime advances, 17-10. Just when I compliment everyone on putting the vote total back up to 35, we turn out 27 today. Oh well. ------------------------------------------ 16. Frozen Synapse vs 8. Homestuck A Functioning God Harleboss ------------------------------------------ -- 12. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 vs 4. A Functioning God
Plain Asia frozen synapse seriously challenging neotokyo for best soundtrack this contest has introduced me to, both rounds have been great so very very impressive if it isn't frontloading like crazy. it has a nice hook but spends most of its time layering together different rhythms and timbres in a less melodious fashion, the progression of beats and overall soundset remind me A LOT of perfect dark, which coincidentally is still my favorite FPS(last great game before halo and call of duty infected everything like some kind of goddamn plague and ruined the genre). actually wouldn't be surprised if the same keyboard workstation was used by both composers, it really sounds remarkably similar, this song would be perfectly in place running through area 51 with elvis :) harelboss really isn't doing anything for me, I think I liked homestuck's round one song much more than this actually lava reef has some really fun FM sounds but nothing else here really appeals to me, the B melody seems really directionless and doesn't evoke anything at all from me. plain asia's melody isn't much better and THAT BRASS is as terrible as it always is, dunno why zun is so obsessed with that patch, but the flamboyant piano noodling saves it, touhou is at it's best when it's melting your brain ... Harleboss Plain Asia My thoughts: Not especially impressed with either in match 1, and for some reason I can't quite explain they seem very similiar to me. I think Frozen Synapse disappoints me less, mostly because Homestuck's round 1 was that much more awesome. This is not an easy call, as I could go either way, but ultimately I just don't care for the way Harleboss is put together. I like pretty much the rest of the Homestuck nom, but not this track. OTOH, the second match is no contest to me. Sonic 3 is the one out of the originals I haven't played, so I have no allegiance there, and I have yet to be impressed with a song from it. Lava Reef is no exception. The Youhou tracks, however, have impressed me by and large. A Functioning God Plain Asia ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: Sceptilesolarbeam | #017 Saviour of the Waking World would be a bomb, Black Rose/Green Sun would be a bomb, and Price of Oblivion was 'aight but I wouldn't take it over Harleboss either indirectly or head-on. Explore could have worked, but at that point I'd rather use Atomyk Ebonpyre, Showtime Original Mix, or Upward Movement. Anyway... From: azuarc | #036 This. It's not a song that gets votes. Songs that get votes either impress with their technical proficiency (by rocking super hard or being wicked complicated), or tug at the heartstrings. Savior of the Waking World does neither. I wanted to showcase the massive variety of themes Homestuck boasts, and Harleboss was a great choice for that. Savior is a better song, but I'd be less likely to vote for it. what I'm able to separate objectively better from subjectively preferred. To compare to three recent winners, it's not touching (Schala's Theme), it's not rocking (The Original), and it's not plain cool (Neon Mines). So no, I wouldn't vote for it in a cage match. I recognize the quality, but that alone doesn't make me want to vote for it. Harleboss at least has the driving tempo to keep me interested. I'm not entirely convinced I *don't* like Harleboss more than Functioning God, but I'm not changing my vote at this point. ... Copied to Clipboard!
