That was an actual answer...

Someone who plays just plays games on their cell phone and maybe owns a Wii and plays casual games are not casual gamers. They're just an everyday person in today's society. A casual gamer is someone who plays Call of Duty. That is literally the definition now. They're hardcore about it, but it's the only game they play or even know about.

Id say a casual gamer is one who only enjoys a small amount of genres. Thus they only focus on a small part of gaming news and gaming history. Even if they spend hours on end playing that 1 game or 1 genre, im not sure if i can call them a "hardcore gamer". Id call them a hardcore jrpg player, or hardcore fps player. But for overall gaming? Id say they are casual.

There are plenty of CoD players that id say casual gamers. When a game sells 20 mill, ya, a good portion are casual gamers. But there are plenty of CoD players who play the game nonstop for a month or two, and then move on to another game from a completely different genre.

They don't want to know any of the subtleties of the game mechanics and if they keep failing at something which requires that knowledge/execution they'll give up before they learn/master it. Doesn't go out of their way to find new or interesting games.

There's not really much of an answer for this question, though, which I'm sure is why you made this topic.

Oh also Wikipedia's description of a casual gamer while I'm on the page.

Casual gamer

"Casual gamer" is a loosely defined term used to describe a type of video game player whose time or interest in playing games is limited compared with a hardcore gamer. Casual gamers can conceivably consist of any people who show more than a passing interest in video games, therefore it is difficult to categorize them as a group. For this reason, games which attempt to appeal to the casual player tend to strive for simple rules and ease of game play, the goal being to present a pick-up-and-play experience that people from almost any age group or skill level could enjoy.[6][24][25][26][27] Casual gaming demographics also vary greatly from those of traditional computer games, as the typical casual gamer is older and more predominantly female,[28][29] with over 74% of those purchasing casual games being women

Gotta break the term up into two types, since those two types are pretty damn different.

mainstream casuals, and minigame/partygame casuals

mainstream: only plays the biggest games: CoD / Halo / Mario / Zelda / Madden / GTA / etc

minigame/partygame: they buy your Carnival Games, Just Dance, your licensed games, Wii Party, and popular mobile games

also, just because you play any one of these games doesn't mean you're appart of that catagory - it's only if those are the only games you play

Games cannot be casual, therefore selecting a game and saying "only casuals play it" is incredibly stupid.

a game can be casual if a huge portion of gamers that play it only care about that game, or that genre.

The reason why CoD is considered casual by so many isnt the gameplay itself, its the fanbase. Same with WoW. These games have 12+million sales (subscribers). Even the best selling games of this gen usually only hit 2-4 mill....Its kinda odd that these few games just have a 8+ mill advantage on other games. If these gamers were more "hardcore" (caring about other genres), youd see demon's souls sell 10+ mill too.

There are hardcore gamers who play CoD. Trust me, there are. Quite a few in fact. But when people say "CoD is a casual game", the reason why i somewhat agree is because there is a disproportionate amount of gamers who only buy the latest CoD/online FPS, and play it every so often. These gamers dont focus on things like gaming history, or the largest gaming news stories.

Yeah, don't really give a crap about what wikipedia says.

The inherent flaw is describing games as casual/hardcore is that it doesn't include any of the time and effort put in by the player. For example, let's call Call of Duty casual and Dark Souls hardcore. Player A dedicates massive amounts of time and energy into Call of Duty, becoming one of the best players in the game. Player B plays Dark Souls for an hour before giving up and never playing again. But if we go by the games, player A is "casual" and player B is "hardcore." That's why it's dumb.

Here's a better way to define it:

Casual gamers are gamers who do not dedicate significant amounts of time and effort into gaming, usually favoring genres that encourage quick and easy play but are open to any games that are the same way.

Hardcore gamers are gamers who dedicate significant time and effort to become good at gaming, but are not limited by game or genre (ot all hardcore gamers aren't going to enjoy every single genre).

We're going by the game definition though. Games define the gamer in this case, not the effort.

And someone just proved my point. He said that casual gamers flock towards Call of Duty. That doesn't make the game casual, the players are.

actually, i didnt prove ur point. I proved that games CAN be casual. Its just not based so much on gameplay and based moreso on the fans that play the game. Call of duty IS a casual game because so many casual gamers buy it.

There are hardcore gamers who buy CoD. They are the ones who are just as excited for Skyrim, or Skyward Sword, or Heroes of Might and Magic 6. However the CoD fanbase as a whole has a smaller % of gamers who think that way.

I guess im defining a game by its fanbase, which you might not like. But yes, games can be considered casual.

They also contain hardcore fanbases. So why give it a label like "casual" when it has fans of both types? Why not define the gamer rather than the game, since its a lot easier to do that than pick a game and assign it a side?

I mean, sure, if someone goes and plays Rock Band with a goal of understanding the game's mechanics and getting very good at it, they might be a hardcore gamer.

If you consider playing a significant variety of games as a necessity for being "hardcore", then they may not be.

Most games are deep and forgiving enough that they can be played both in a casual and hardcore way. Some aren't, however.

I mean, do you really think that Cooking Mama and Carnival Games and... whatever else can really be played in a hardcore way?

Also, no person neatly fits into either category of "hardcore" or "casual". I'm sure there are plenty of hardcore gamers who are quite happy to mash buttons and watch the pretty effects in Marvel vs Capcom 3.

So a casual gamer instantly becomes a hardcore gamer if he sticks Dark Souls into his PS3 for five minutes? Its basically what you're saying. You define the gamer strictly by the games they play, meaning all it takes for someone to move up to "hardcore" is to spend minimal time with a hardcore game.

And I do take offense, as people (so called "hardcore" gamers) try to downplay accomplishments of others because they give the game a stupid label. Nevermind the fact that they slap the "hardcore" title on themselves based on the games they play more than the time, skill level, and effort they have with video games.

Yeah I agree with this line of thinking.

Casual game = game that lends itself more to casual gamers.
Hardcore game = game that lends itself more to hardcore gamers.

But a casual gamer can play a hardcore game and a hardcore gamer can play a casual game.

Super Smash Bros Melee is a casual game, but the tournament scene got completely defined and redefined by hardcore gamers who delved deep into the game mechanics.

... Have you been listening? Because that's not what anyone is saying. In fact we've been saying the opposite.

CoD is a casual game because it has such a high ratio of casual gamers to hardcore gamers. Inversely, Dark Souls is considered a "hardcore" game because it has such a high ratio of hardcore gamers to casual gamers.

The ratio. Know what that means? There ARE hardcore gamers that play CoD, and there ARE casual gamers that play Dark Souls. If a hardcore gamer plays CoD, he's still a hardcore gamer. If a casual gamer plays Dark Souls, he's still a casual gamer.
