From: KamikazePotato | #298 Force Your Way is bleh. Drop it for The Landing. Also needs Fisherman's Horizon theme.
Fisherman's Horizon is a weaker Breezy, which is in turn a weaker Balamb Garden. Are you suggesting we move Balamb Garden way up or something?

1) The Legendary Beast (only one I'm not sure about) 2) Maybe I'm a Lion 3) Fisherman's Horizon 4) Man with the Machine Gun 5) The Landing 6) The Extreme
The Landing is not going into the fifth slot, no way, no how. Look at past results. It simply doesn't have the power to sway people who do not care for FF8. Sure, it's a cool piece in context, but most people *dislike* FF8 and the idea is to make a sale to those people as well as the ones who think the soundtrack kicks ass already. It can maybe go into the second or first slot, but I want a really good alt if that's the case, because it might be necessary to make a way out of the loser's bracket if it goes up against an entrant that is more or less bottom loaded.
Similarly, FH is just a shadow of Balamb Garden. Ask people to listen to both and I'd bet 10 to 1 that most people will find Balamb Garden more memorable. It has a sharper tune, it plays much earlier and creates a fond memory, and has a much cozier atmosphere than Fisherman's Horizon in general. If the idea is to nom a FH theme it should be the theme that plays when Galbadia invades.
As for Legendary Beast...I can see an argument for it, but I'm not sure if it should be the opening lick. Just doesn't feel like it would have a great reception that early.

Damn it I was gonna do Bomberman Hero! Two comments:
- Redial, Zip, and Fatidic are the best three songs, in that order, and thus should be 5, 6, and alt. Personally I'd go 5. Fatidic and 6. Redial but I can deal with the vice versa, just as long as Mimesis gets bumped to 4. Zip is perfect as the alt. - Never liked Supplement. I'd throw Tripod in that spot.
Regardless, I have to automatically give an official support for Bomberman Hero just on the quality of the top 3 alone. I can see B8 not liking the soundtrack beyond that sadly, but it deserves a shot anyway
Third to say drop Force Your Way and add The Landing. I personally like Only a Plank Between One and Perdition, no idea how widespread that opinion is.

Scroll to the bottom left corner. Won a match, lost a close one, and the song it was against got eviscerated by a finalist. The opener has to be decently strong - The Landing is not. Granted that Force Your Way also didn't have an awesome run in that bracket, but it won comfortably on Round 1, lost to Nefertiti by one vote, and Nefertiti avoided the doubling against JTT, which then went on to lose to Trombe but not that badly. It has more strength than The Landing I think.
While I'm not actually ignoring VGMC results when I'm aiming for strategy here, I'm also not taking them as solid truth either. Especially when it gets into things that rely heavily on assuming a bunch of transitivity/X-Stats. I'd sooner look at MP Credits v Nefertiti and try to work out how I think that'd go. I'm pretty skeptical that Force Your Way is stronger than The Landing, let alone substantially stronger.

As for FF8, I totally love The Landing and it deserves a spot. I'd stick it in the 3 spot with Machine Gun moving to 4. Force Your Way gets bumped, but I'm not too thrilled with Maybe I'm A Lion in the 5. I never liked Prologue. I'll need to listen to some of the songs again to determine what my list would be. I would love to see FF8 do well so I need to believe that the songlist entered in has the best chance of winning
I actually meant to say I don't like Monogenic and that should be replaced by Tripod. Supplement I personally enjoy but I can see the beginning of the song hurting unfortunately.
From: Xuxon | #305 What's the title of that one? I think that's one of the ones I like.
One sec, I'll look for it.

And I found it. It is indeed One Plank, etc:
I could definitely slot that in somewhere.
So let's say...something like this?
1) The Landing: 2) Balamb Garden: 3) Only a Plank Between One and Perdition: 4) The Man with the Machine Gun: 5) Maybe I'm a Lion: 6) The Extreme: Alt: Force Your Way:
This looks solid to me and I would totally go for it.

From: Xuxon | #313 Celtic Guardian already got it. Only a Plank Between One and Perdition.
I'm also partial to Never Look Back. My fav is Silence and Motion but i know no one would go for that.
Silence and Motion...I rather like that one, actually. It indeed probably has, like, 0 star power though. FF8 has a very ambient soundtrack for the most part and that makes finding songs tricky :(

On that note, it really is a pity we can't use the stuff from The Black Mages. I'd take Force Your Way BM over a TON of stuff even if the original might not be a worldbeater, and it'd be a part of my dream lineup, alongside potentailly Breeze or FH Orchestral.

B8 really wouldn't like Tripod's main instrument, I feel. Supplement has wider appeal, so I'm probably sticking with it. I'll switch Redial and Mimesis sometime for sure. Fatidic feels more like the final song to me.

Yes, I laugh at my own jokes. http://lparchive.org/Metroid-Prime-3-Corruption/Images/1-sitandspinumos.gif
My own "personal preference" FFVIII one would probably go something like: The Extreme, The Oath, Liberi Fatali, The Landing, Premonition, Compression of Time, (Succession of Witches as Alt)
...But a lot of that (like Compression of Time) would be going way out there probably.
-- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? GotD (219/384) Melee v FFX
Funnily enough, I considered The Oath too! I really really wanted to slot it in, but I thought from the point of view of a voter who doesn't love FF8 and the thought that came to mind is "yo bro, where's the payoff?". Had to make lots of cuts like that, which is why I ended up with such an...unorthodox list.

1. Islam Is The Party Religion9 - 2. Falling Down - 3. www.friendlydads.net The Friendliest Dads On The Net - 4. Muscleberg - 5. The Old Spalding Song Sucked - 6. jonathan taylor thomas - Alt. Zalatar Precious Pellets -
The nomination period remains open for a week. At the end of the week, the 64 entries with the highest number of support votes will be included. (I'll figure out a tiebreaker as needed, probably chronological.) The entries will also be seeded based on those vote totals as well.
I had the options to: 1) Keep a basic single-elim 64 tourney 2) Expand to 128, adding another round 3) Add a loser's bracket and make the 64 entries double elimination
There is no way I'm BOTH going to 128 and doing double elimination. This would take forever. Remember that the number of matches required is (contestants - 1), and that applies to both a winner's and a loser's bracket. Even if there weren't logistical issues, and there are, a double-elim 128 tournament would require 254 or 255 matches, depending on if the loser's champion wins the first round of the finals. At a pace of strictly 2 per day, that's still 4 months. I don't think we'll have that kind of stamina. Heck, Ed will be ready to start VGMC6 by then!
Honestly, I'm not thinking 128 is a good idea anyway. At this point we've had about 50 nominations in 2 days. If we get 25 each day, sure, that's 175 which exceeds 128 by a healthy margin, but the quality of entries is going to drop over time, and support votes will only end up going to everyone's known favorites. 128 is going to leave a LOT of chaff to sort from the wheat.
Speaking of those logistics, I just spent the last hour trying to figure out how a loser's bracket for 64-man would work. I think I have it worked out now, but it's not nearly as elegant as I'd like:
L1 means loser's bracket round 1. W2 means winner's bracket round 2, etc.
L1: 32 (losers) from W1 -> 16 to L2 L2: 16 from L1 and 16 from W2 = 32 -> 16 to L3 L3: 16 from L3 and 8 from W3 = 24 -> 12 to L4 L4: 12 from L3 and 4 from W4 = 16 -> 8 to L5 L5: 8 from L5 -> 4 to L6 L6: 4 from L5 + 2 from W5 = 6 -> 3 to L7 L7: 3 from L6 + 1 from W6 = 4 -> 2 to L8 L8: final 2
In other words, you get a bye in the loser's bracket for every win you had in the winner's bracket, plus the losers in the final two rounds get an extra bye. This is the simplest arrangement I can come up with.
I said earlier that double elimination was np as long as nobody had any objection. I don't want to ask for more songs from a game since that could preclude some selections that can't reasonably field a 7th, 8th, 9th track. A game that loses in the first four rounds, and then goes the distance thereafter would be forced to play 11 times. The 5th and 6th rounders would still go 10 to win. This is arguably grounds for objection, so I'm going to ask again now that I've looked at it more carefully -- are we sure we want double elimination?
This HAS to be the 6 theme or the 1 theme. No excuses allowed for not including it! :P

Compression of Time is awesome. Eww Succession of Witches though.
In the end, I couldn't pass up doing another of my favorite overall soundtracks, even if it means being the third Final Fantasy soundtrack in the nominations. I guess we'll see how it goes.
Nomination: Final Fantasy Tactics 1. Trisection - 2. Remnants - 3. Battle on the Bridge - 4. Decisive Battle - 5. Under the Stars - 6. Antipyretic - Alt. Ultima, the Nice Body -
Antipyretic: This is one of the strongest battle themes, and that says a lot because nearly all of them are good. It should definitely stay, though in which slot I am not positive.
Battle on the Bridge: Pretty good, but not in the top half of keepers, I think. Could be replaced, though I dont think its a huge weak link.
Decisive Battle: I think this gets forgotten a lot because it only plays once in the whole game. A good piece though, and a lot of players mention wanting to hear it again, so theres that.
Remnants: Oh man, this slot is the one I have no idea about because its Board 8. I really, really want to use this, but what are the odds itll do well? Unless I get a bunch of people saying it is surprisingly popular, itll be the one replaced if one of the other tracks gets a compelling argument.
Trisection: Apparently this ones rather popular. Ive always liked it, and talking to others leads me to believe its a common opinion. It seems like it could be a good first or second slot.
Ultima the Nice Body: Honestly, I like both Ultema tracks about equally, but Im not sure on the general reception of them. I could see using one, both, or none with equal ease.
Under the Stars: My personal favorite track, which is not a small thing considering I love the entire soundtrack. I really want to keep this, though again, the position is debatable.
Considerations for switching: Apoplexy, In Pursuit, Run Past Through the Plains, Tension1, Ultema the Perfect Body
Ones I love but Board 8 probably would not: Antidote, Back Fire, Memories, Treasure, Tutorial

They're original remixes used in-game. Totally counts IMO though obviously Azuarc has the final say.
@Celtic: I'm dead tired ATM, but I'll give those tracks a listen tomorrow. Gut feeling says you're mostly A-OK here and nailed the OST, but we'll see if there's anything to modify.

any objections/suggestions?
Avoid Dancing Mad, give Aria De Mezzo Carattere a softie slot, and uhh...get creative with everything else. Oh, and be very wary about using Terra as any sort of heavy hitter.

Oh, and I'll update the sheet tomorrow. I wanna go to bed. But since I have it written, here's my nom for day 3:
Nomination: Amplitude 1. Shades of Blue - Chris Child - 2. Rockstar - The Production Club - 3. Cool Baby - DJ HMX/Plural - 4. Nitro Narcosis - Manchild - 5. Synthesized - Symbion Project - 6. Robot Rockerz - Komputer Kontroller - A. Super Spr0de - Freezepop -
Yes, I'm aware that Amplitude has many songs that were previously licensed. These tracks were not. I'm also considering Push (Gameboyz) if anyone wants to make a case.
BTW, leave Force Your Way off of FF8?? Ouch! I personally like that song a good deal, but do what you gotta do.
I think Searching for Friends would probably be one of the stronger ones as would The Decisive Battle, but FF6 is kind of tough. The "obvious" answers of Dancing Mad and Terra aren't problem-free by any measure.

Hm, a positive first reaction is nice.
KamikazePotato posted... Yeees FFT. List could use Ultima the Perfect Body, Antidote, and Night Attack, Tutorial, Back Fire. Plenty of stuff to choose from.
Ultima the Perfect Body I could definitely see. Antidote seems too ambient to work well. Night Attack, while I am fine with it, I think would flop miserably to Board 8. Tutorial is questionable even though it may be my favorite tutorial music in anything, and a higher up piece for me in this soundtrack. Back Fire, I think I may be the only person to actually like. It never seems to get mentioned.

If nobody is going to do it, I'll try putting together a FFIX playlist. I don't know how the order would go, but I think I have an idea of which tracks are considered the standouts.
Out of curiosity, how does something like .hack//G.U. count? Do the songs from Vol 1 - Vol 3 count and "G.U." itself is basically one entry? Or are they all being counted separately? And if so, what's the rule, if any, on taking Vol 3 for instance, where technically a lot of the music from the other volumes replays in one form or another?

azuarc I need your word on being able to put in the Space Jam remix on the list for Barkley SUAJG -
As for the Amplitude list (which I am thrilled you nominated and am officially supporting) Push absolutely has to be in. I'd take out either Rockstar or Synthesized (whichever you keep should go in the 3 spot, with Cool Baby moving to 2).
My top 3 are Shades Of Blue, Push, and Nitro Narcosis in that order. I like Super Spr0de as the alt. I'm not sure about Komputer Kontroller as the final. I would say any one of my top 3 should take the slot...but Shades Of Blue kinda needs to be first, and Nitro Narcosis is better in the 5. Push would work as boss though.
Nomination: Final Fantasy IX 1. Vamo' Alla Flamenco - 2. Loss of Me - 3. Assault of the White Dragon - 4. Battle 1 - 5. Dark Messenger - 6. You're Not Alone! - Alt: Black Mage Village -
Snubs for consideration by others: Jesters of the Moon, Hunter's Chance, Terra
Nominate: NiGHTS into Dreams... 1. Paternal Horn ~ 2. Take the Slow Train ~ 3. Under Construction ~ 4. Suburban Museum ~ 5. Nights and Reala ~Theme of a Tragedic Revenge~ ~ 6. The Dragon Gave A Loud Scream ~ Alt. The Amazing Water ~
The second set scares me - there's *four* more or less untested entrants, but it has potental to make a super deep run. The first one should garner less complaints than the original set, but it seriously lacks a song that has finals-worthy star power.

dunno about FFIX's standard battle theme, there's a ton of better option in that soundtrack, including the boss theme, final battle, the place I'll return to someday, crossing those hills(I know, melodies of life, best arrangement of it though), successive battles, hunters chance, and terra
no beefs with the FFVIII entry except maybe sub in the landing somewhere, that soundtrack is super hard to narrow down to 7 though
suggesting run past through the plains over remnants or under the stars
