I guess I can add Chrono Trigger to my earlier FF7 mention. I think Chrono Trigger is a fine game and fun too, but I just don't think it's anywhere near as incredible as a ton of people think it is.

I dunno. The concept of "timed hits" makes the battle system much more satisfying and engaging, especially when you do things like Super Jump and try to see how many you can get in a row.

More RPGs should use timed hits, honestly. It's an awesome concept.

what the **** was that about when the nominations were going on. that game turned me off the idea of timed hits so bad. partially because battles took so friggin' long and there were so few things worth a damn in that game.

CoD is like Madden in that people buy it to play with their friends, not necessarily because they think it's the best thing they've ever played. It's not like an OoT, FF7, etc., that its fanbase is like "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER."

In terms of disconnect between how I liked stuff and how many other people liked it, FF7 is textbook. Although I think I appreciate it more if I pretend everyone likes it because of the chuu2.

In terms of stuff that I wish people would stop ranting over, probably Umineko actually. At least the couple of fans that I've seen defend it do it for completely the wrong reasons because they misinterpret the work then bash on others for misinterpreting it in a different way :/

Oh, there's a lot of choices here. OoT, DKC, Yoshi's Island, KOTOR...I could go on about ones I think are just overrated. Not saying any of these are BAD games, but definitely overrated.

But man oh man, one game tops them all, IMO: Bioshock. Why the f*** people love that piece of s*** game I'll never have any idea. I'm not even going to bother with 2, because everyone loves that one too. Not only do I think it's not great, I don't even think it's decent. It's a droll, predictable game with a forced atmosphere that is impossible to get lost in for me. It's too bad, because I can see where it would have been a good setting, and could have been a good game, but it just wasn't. Every time it started to do something right, it messed it up in the worst way possible.

Now there's an unpopular opinion!

People who prefer the original Paper Mario to SMRPG are bizarre. Now, Thousand Year Door? That's a tough contender right there, but PM64 has little going for it beyond its aesthetic. Thoroughly mediocre.

If you liked EarthBound's gameplay, you should play Mother 3. Much better all around.

Both are great games, but I'd argue that the story and setting of EarthBound outshines its successor. Can't argue that Mother 3 has better gameplay, but the Mother series isn't about gameplay anyway.

Ocarina always starts in a big hole in this debate because it's the highest rated game ever by critics and publications, and it has a fanbase that considers it the "best ever" more than any other fanbase does with any other game.

So yeah, I guess I'll go with Ocarina. It simply has much more ground to make up relative to anything else. Even the other games that are nearly as highly rated (Galaxy series, GTA4lmao) don't have nearly the laundry list of awards and #1 placements that OoT does, and their fanbases are almost insignificant compared to OoT's.

For me what's more annoying is that Zelda fans are either total drones, or they think that everything in the series after Majora's Mask is trash in comparison to Majora's Mask and before.

Am I the only one who thinks the Legend of Zelda franchise is a franchise that has a lot of promise, but has not proven itself enough yet to be on the killer level that so many fans speak of it as?

The thing is, for me Link is a rather boring character unless he is cel-shaded (or whatever is done in A Link to the Past). I'm a huge fan of A Link to the Past, but only because of it being a huge 16-bit adventure that feels like it has so many weapons/magic spells and dungeons yet is actually pretty short. I feel that later Zelda games, especially Ocarina of Time, are not as action-packed and therefore not as fun. Skyward Sword seems like it could be the best game in the series if it doesn't botch the controls, but then again I had the EXACT same feelings about Other M last year (feeling down on the Metroid franchise, playing through Prime and even though I am a huge fan of Prime, Other M seemed like it was going to address my main complaints with Prime - namely that Prime was weakest in action and story, both categories which I found Super Metroid to excel in even though I expected to not like Super Metroid as much as Prime) and we all saw how that worked out. I also like Majora's Mask a little more than Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess a little better than Majora's Mask, and I would consider Twilight Princess to be an all-time favorite of mine except that it does not feel phenomenal enough (am I going to consider a 2006 game that often feels "stuck in the '90s" to be an undisputed classic? NO), so I will always keep my eye on major console Legend of Zelda titles. Same with Metroid and Smash - to me, both franchises are hugely promising, but they have not proven enough to me yet.
