I was not bashing anything! I was defending why my "Zelda series is the most overrated series ever" is unlikely to change.

That being said, I also consider that series to hold a lot of promise for the future. It's just that the franchise is neither consistently top tier (only two games in the series are that for me), nor "it used to be so good and now it's so bad". I can honestly see Skyward Sword being that third Zelda game that proves itself to me so long as it does not fumble its motion controls, though. Problem is, I had the exact same feeling about Other M last year and we saw how that worked out.

Because while I like MW2, and think it's a good FPS, "biggest entertainment launch of all time" is way beyond what it deserved IMO. When I mentioned CoD4 and MW2 I meant more based on their sales. Obviously on this site they're not overrated, but if you look at the sales and the various records, that's what I was pointing towards.

MW2 averaged low 90s. Black Ops averaged high 80s. That's not really "losing their s***," and pretty much every pro reviewer agrees they're not as good as 4. GTA you sorta have a case for, though.

CoD before 4 was pretty much in the same sentence as medal of honor of 'those ww2 games, yeah they're okay. ai sucks though.'

I can actually get behind this sentiment. The series is obviously a very big deal; and yet, very few CoD players would actually argue that those games have artistic merit, or are among the best games ever made. It's just a really well-marketed series of social games, with the most widespread appeal imaginable.

And in that regard, I honestly think the series succeeds. Even though I'm hilariously inept at CoD (think Jim in that one episode of "The Office"), I do think it's a fair amount of fun to get the guys together and play a few rounds every now and then. That's more than I can say for other casual multiplayer titles, like Wii Sports and most of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.

Granted, that may be where I disagree with some of you. I don't consider sales to immediately be indicative of being overrated. Madden sells a lot each year, but most of its own players aren't gonna sit there and tell you it's the greatest game ever made. CoD sells so well because people like to play online with their friends, likewise.

When reviewing, yes. When creating "best game ever" lists or similar things though, it's all Call of Duty 4, and then everything else in the series falls by the wayside. It sounds like a Resident Evil or Metroid situation where people only really regard one or two games in the franchise with such high regard, generally.

Heck, Call of Duty 4 barely cracked the top 20 in IGN's top modern games feature.

As for GTA, that is probably a more difficult case since there are at least three to four games in that series held in such high regard. However, that franchise also seems to have a lot more fans on this board compared to most "casual shooters".

I'd consider Super Mario 64 and Super Smash Bros. Melee to be a little overrated because even though they deserve all their praise, later entries in their series don't deserve the loud anti-fanbases that are created by fans of those two. I'm a huge fan of both Mario 64 and Melee though.

exactly! i was told that i would love it and that i don't have to be a star wars fan etc etc.
8 hours later and i'm going sith because all the cool people are red. then i got HK and that was pretty much the end of it. immediately maxed him out and he stayed in my team. it's a fine game but if you ain't a star wars fan that's all it'll be.

except for HK. you'll love him more if you aren't a fan, i am convinced of this.

jeez, smrpg. there's another one that i didn't think would ever be mentioned in these topics. ditto for Mario & Luigi for the GBA - both have a similar problem for me in that they have style, humor, charm, and after 6 hours i lose all desire to continue playing. after 10, i stop because i simply don't care. all of it wears off.

Fair enough, I agree it's a "different" way at looking at it than something like, OoT/FFVII/Xenogears where you have notable poritons of their fanbases claiming it's the greatest of all time. If we factor sales out of this, I agree CoD probably doesn't belong in this discussion. In which case I'd be back to saying it's something like OoT/LttP/FFVII/Xenogears/RBY (some more unpopular choices here I'm sure). Not that any of those are bad or anything, of course.

Not sure whether I'm willing to group Shadow of the Colossus in there. If we go by the whole "true art" section of the fanbase, I'd say yeah, sure. But...

SMRPG was sorta fun I guess for a few hours? Charm doesn't last through a whole game. The gameplay has to back it up, and SMRPG's gameplay as pretty lackluster.

Nostalgia? I know for me it was my first RPG, so for a rather long time I probably overrated it. Over time though it's kind of sunk in placement if you made me rank games I've played as I've thought about it as objectively as I could. Still think it's a good game, but at the same time I've never seen it spoken of as highly as some of the higher profile RPGs, so it's never struck me as overrated personally.

Actually, based on my NCAA Games II Contest, most of Board 8 seems to agree that Paper Mario 1 is the best one! Well, unless Bowser's Inside Story could beat it, but I doubt it.

And I actually liked Partners in Time, and I think you're insane.

Now here's a game with seriously underrated gameplay. Though it's not the game's main attraction, I honestly thought EarthBound's battle system was great - it's simple, but really fun all the same, and I like the rolling damage counters a lot.

That bein said SMRPG's gameplay isn't exactly great either. The mechanics are good but most of the bosses don't pose much in the way of challenge-- which is pretty important for an RPG. But it's nothing to really hate on it for.

I first played EB in...2006? 7? And liked the gameplay. It wasn't the best in the world by any means, but it was a good bit better than SMRPG's.

to be fair, it's easy to look to games with large casual fanbases as being overrated as large numbers and a ton of praise will make you go 'why did this get so much love and praise.' but... hm. if you want overrated smaller games (which KOTOR does end up fitting under more than not!) then i'll give you probably the king of these - Xenogears. there's a lot right with the game. it is not even close to the best rpg on the ps1.

...I think I'd agree, and probably put SotC in 2nd in this "category." Well, except for the PS1 RPG part, I haven't really played too many (excluding some ports, basically FF7-9, Gears, and Tactics) so I'd feel weird making that comment (That said I'd take FF7, FF8, and FFT over Xenogears out of that group)

I've definitely been meaning to... but I've always been extremely paranoid about emulators. Just one of those weird quirks I've always had, I guess.

I'm just kinda wondering what makes an RPG battle system bad to you considering gameplay has never been the strong point of an RPG, and most people don't tend to lump difficulty in with gameplay.

I have my criteria, but SMRPG isn't guilty of much of it at all except the difficulty thing.

SotC's a weird one. like everyone in its fanbase likes to think it's a cult game, but it's really, really not. the game sold well - enough that the developer's had plenty of free reign with the third game in that trilogy. it got high marks and awards and general opinion's mixed, but it's very much so a popular and casual game. it just feels like a small cult one.
