So if you think FFVI is so strong, why wasn't Link's Awakening in your top 30? It got into the mid-40s on FFVI twice.

I remember posting a long time ago in some of the very first contest stats and discussion topics. I would never be considered a regular, because I want to punch most of the people's faces in a lot of the time, but I have had some very fun conversations in these topic.

The same reason I don't have MGS2 slightly above MGS4 (through Shadow of the Colossus's performance): I forgot about it!

There are probably many games I'm overlooking in strength, like Final Fantasy Tactics, which is a pretty strong game and it could probably be on the level of FFIV.

Also, I definitely have to add SMB3/SMW in the Top 10 near both Smash games. I'm also tempted to put Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II in the Top 30.

I don't think Brawl has a good shot at SM3/W/64. I would have given Melee an excellent shot before Brawl's release, but now I'd consider it an underdog as well.

Perhaps the most infamous sprite of all time, one of the few match pics to get its own legendary moniker.



Mega Man goin' crazy! Also, that's not Solid Snake! A lot of people got miffed that they used Naked Snake pics for Snake this year.



This match pic was seriously embarrassing for Mega Man. Felt bad for him getting a pic like that.



I believe yoblazer said Samus/Tifa was the first time anyone had ever seen Samus outside of the suit on this site, but this came first!



We had a good batch of user pics for the final, but this one was my favorite.

Villains Contest 2005 Famous Match Pics



I think we tried to come up with many nicknames for this Ghaleon pic, but I think we settled on Imodium Ghaleon. Also, Vergil apparently has a calendar plastered on his clothes.



Those pearly whites!



The first time CATS gets a recognizable pic, and he nearly wins!



And everyone who picked Sin to win this fourpack tore up their brackets once this pic was released.



I always thought this was a pretty cool looking pic.



People always claimed that Kefka would perform a ton better with a sprite pic, and when he finally got one, he didn't disappoint. Also, Villains Contest sprite pics were laughably bad because most characters looked really out of place and didn't fit together at all.

I think Mario 3/Mario World/Mario 64 could still go in any order if they had a 1-on-1 match, personally. There's not that much distance between them.

FFVI definitely didn't look that great last contest. You either have to admit it's not anywhere near as strong as it looked in 2004, or you have to think an awful lot of Link's Awakening.

Not that either one is impossible, mind you, but still.

Even if you do think highly of Link's Awakening's contest strength...it's pretty hard to look at FFVI doing worse on LttP in 2009 than in 2004 despite LA and Super Metroid also being in the 2009 poll and not conclude that very bad things have happened to FFVI since then.

Hmm...

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. It's late where I live so I have to rest.

SM64 should be the clear favorite over SMW and SMB3. I'm with Yoblazer in that I agree Brawl has very little shot at any of those Mario games, but Melee does have a chance. I'd probably pick Melee over SMB3 and SMW actually (if I'm going to lose, I'd like to be on the side that's coming back with the ASV this time). SM64 is a clear favorite over Melee too, but it's got an outside chance.

This may be somewhat controversial, but I really think Brawl-hype Melee was the clear #3 at the time, and would have easily handled LTTP or RBY. And if it had somehow found itself in a final with FFVII, could have led for a good amount of time (30 minutes perhaps) en route to finishing with 45%.

Link's Awakening was the only Nintendo game in that match, and after seeing how well Majora's Mask did last year you have to believe that getting 56% on "just a Zelda game" isn't nearly as bad. We also now know that Zelda and MMX don't have as much overlap as we initially thought since Link didn't do much SFF damage to MMX, and it IS rather likely that FFVI shares more of a fanbase with MMX than it does with LA (coincidentally, both FF and MMX jumped ship to the PlayStation from Nintendo consoles in the mid-'90s, which helps the cause of this theory). Of course, that doesn't necessarily explain what happened afterwards...maybe Sonic games don't overlap as much with Legend of Zelda compared to Sonic characters?

Question for thought: Do you think Final Fantasy VI could lose to Shadow of the Colossus?

Summer Contest 2005 Famous Match Pics



Cries of "That's not CJ!" flooded the board and many were up in arms, claiming that this ended up costing him the match.



I should've made a mention of "Arabusa" for the 2004 match pics, but suffice it to say that many people were very unhappy that Hayabusa didn't get ninja pics in 2004.



This was another one of those match pics where everyone suddenly started worrying about their brackets as soon as it was revealed.



Extreme closeup headshots was the theme for round 2, and no match pic epitomizes why that was a bad idea more than this one.



People thought Zelda might have had a shot against the "Undersnaker" if she hadn't been given the little girl match pic.



Luigi looks absolutely astounded by something as he looks down toward Tifa. I wonder what it could be...!



Happiest and cutest match pic ever, d'awwwwww



As a gag, Ceej put up a bunch of cosplay pics early to pretend they were the match pics. This was definitely the best one.



This still might be the best and funniest match pic we've ever had.

No, there's no good argument that FFVI was the game that suffered LFF in that match. There really doesn't need to have been much LFF at all.

No.

Anyways, FFVI did look pretty bad last contest- it got 45% on LTTP with 2 other Nintendo games in there. Typical 3-way SFF damage would put FFVI at 38-40% on LTTP in a fair match. I do think quite a bit of LTTP's strength, so it's not so so horrible, but FFVI is probably worth 45% or less on FFX.

Series Contest 2006 Famous Match Pics



BOOM! Tough actin' Tinactin!



Probably the busiest match pic we've ever had.



If there was ever an argument that sprite rounds are outdated and need to be done away with, it's this one. Yikes.



I thought it was pretty unfair that Smash Bros. characters got sprites from their classic games that weren't from the game, but that's just me, I guess.



Resident Evil Gaiden almost left a lasting mark on this contest.



This match pic was the reason Tingle got into SC2K6, just so you know.



A match pic like this was FF's worst nightmare, and it might have made this match closer than it should've been.



Lots of good FF/Zelda match pics (all of the FF match pics included Cloud, although from what I hear, there are apparently other games in the series!), but this was my favorite.

Summer Contest 2007 Famous Match Pics



This match pic is all kinds of goofy, but I love it.



This is another one of those pics that got changed, but only to a higher resolution pic because Matt was so blurry.





The first time we saw Big Boss with a Naked Snake match pic. Anyone left who doubted the match pic factor (self included) pretty much gave in after this one.



Man, that Fox pic. And Big Boss proving Snake's not the only one with a hideous sprite.



Many people felt Bacondorf cost Ganon the match here.



It's pics like these that make me wish we didn't have sprite rounds because some characters are at a huge disadvantage, and it's not fair. If Leon Kennedy ever gets a decent opponent in a sprite round, he's doomed. Plain and simple.



I love this thing because someone tried to make it as silly as possible.

Just when people thought Kefka's match pics couldn't get any worse.



Just posting this one because this match actually went without a match pic for about an entire hour. Neku was the one who benefited the most when it finally went up, by the way.



I'm pretty sure this is the first time a user made match pic was able to sneak in fan art without getting caught (Auron's is the fan art, for the record).



Keep on smilin'!



2008 user match pics were often an example of "creativity taken too far," where the "gimmick" became the focal point of the pic and not the characters, and this match pic probably epitomizes it better than any of them.

Cool idea for a match pic.



I think Zen is still the only person who thought this was a good idea.



I liked the "Famous mini-games" concept for this one.



Famous swords was also cool.

Games Contest featured some cool match pics, but nothing really stood out, and there was really not much controversy over any of them.

Character Battle 2008
Cecil/Jade Curtiss/Wario/Zack Fair
Wario had huge Stand Out Factor against three RPG guys and was the favorite cuz of it. However, he was in for a 24-hour spanking from a soon-to-be board legend. This was Zack Fair's first match, and it got everyone PUMPED. Today, Zack is one of the Stat Topic's favorite contest entrants, partly because of humor, mainly because he's freakin awesome. ZackFAQs was born on this day.

Frog/Ganondorf/KOS-MOS/Neku Sakuraba
Notable because the picture wasn't up in time. KOS-MOS fans were furious as Frog jumped out to a big lead without Kossy's assets to worry about. The pic finally was posted, and... Neku Sakuraba gained the most ground. Even weirder than usual, GameFAQs!

L-Block/Meta-Knight/Ryu/The Dog
All eyes were on Blocky's first match since becoming contest champ. By beating Ryu and destroying another joke entrant in the Duck Hunt Dog, he (I find it pretty funny how we all started calling L-Block "he" all of a sudden) did not disappoint. Block haters despaired, as the defending champ looked to have lost none of his potency. Little did we know...

Donkey Kong/Tails/Tidus/WCC
Tidus chokes. Donkey Kong chokes bigger. Notable because I CALLED THE HECK OUT OF IT, WOOHAA.

Dante/Hogger/Laharl/Ramza
Hilarious match in which three pieces of fodder clawed for Father Dante's table scraps. Hogger was backed by the WoW fanbase and our own Albion, and that's what I'll remember most about this one. Albion trolled the whole topic, board, maybe even the damn site by rallying for 24 freaking hours. My favorite moment in this match occurred when Hogger lost a five minute update and Albion explained it was because he had "left to make a sandwich." This one had me laughing hard.

Shepard/Magus/Sandbag/Sonic
The choke of all chokes. In 2003, Magus had been considered a plausible long shot against Link. Now, five years later, he gives up over 2000 After School Votes to a bag of freaking sand. And the sad thing is... seemingly everyone WANTED him to lose. Magus, what the hell happened man.

Heavy/Jill/Kratos/Revolver Ocelot
Ocelot beat Jill a year earlier. During the year off, he got a megahit in MGS4 while Jill got nothing. Rematch comes, and Jill Valentine wins. Inexplicably. Out of ****ing nowhere. Unless you want to argue that Cloud somehow hurt Jill more in 2007, this did not make a lick of sense, but it was another chapter to Jill's storied contest history. This time, a happy one.

Luigi/Liquid/Bowser/Phoenix
Bad year for the Nintendo B-team, as Liquid storms through both Luigi and Bowser, and Phoenix almost beats Bowser as well. Pathetic showing from Nintendo here. They don't do 4ways well when SFF is involved.

Crono/Amaterasu/L-Block/Ryu
L-Block's first big stumble. After beating Ryu with relative ease, people considered him the favorite here. Crono, pissed about his loss to Vincent last year, would have none of it. Block still finished second and moved on, damn him for eliminating Ryu.

Crono/L-Block/Pikachu/Alucard
DING DONG, THE BLOCK IS DEAD. Pikachu shocked the world here not only by destroying the joke, but why finishing incredibly close to Crono. How'd I feel about this? I god damn hated it. I would have been jumping for joy had Alucard slayed the beast, but man... anyone but the ****ing rat.

Samus/Vincent/Crono/Pikachu
Crono pissed! Crono mom pissed too (Ayla > all)! After being the first N9er to lose to an outsider, Crono avenges the 2007 against the same opponent, rallying past Vincent in a last hour comeback. Similar to Frog's comeback over Axel a year earlier, but the stakes here were much higher.

Kirby/Dante/Sephiroth/Sonic
Sonic had already blown it by losing to Auron earlier, but Auron was a legit top-10 beast, and Sonic had to contend with Sandbag in the poll, whom some would argue might siphon votes. Basically, excuses. However, there were absolutely NO excuses here, as Sonic dropped a perfectly legit match against Kirby in the quarterfinals. Why the hell did this happen? Were people just sick of Sonic? Was it Kirby's awesome picture? Who knows, but this was the lowest point for the Sonic crew.

Link/Crono/Snake/Cloud
Grand finals. Snake had already beaten Cloud in just the last match, but Sephiroth was there posing as a convenient excuse. No excuses this time, however, so Snake had to nut up or shut up with his own power. Guess what he did. Snake shot a jolt of electricity throughout the entire site - he not only beat Cloud in the finals, but led OUR GOD LINK until the morning vote. Of course, Link woke up none too please and smashed things good, but how many people can say they led Link for hours at a time? Link gets the top placement, but Snake wins the distinction of being star of the contest.
