My favorite moment in this match occurred when Hogger lost a five minute update and Albion explained it was because he had "left to make a sandwich." This one had me laughing hard.

Oh man, I remember this. So good. Albion's best moment (although that admittedly isn't saying much).

And it was amazing how quickly Pikachu transformed from a heel to a face when it came time to face L-Block. I think I even voted for Pikachu just to get rid of L-Block. That's how much a lot of the board hated it.

No prob, glad people are enjoying this topic. It's nine years in the making and should be for the whole board, not just the same people who are always here.

Anyway, it might be just me, but I've completely forgotten about Best Game Ever 2009 a mere two years after it happened. charmander referenced a match or two from that contest earlier this topic, and I thought he was talking about GotD and had his results all wrong. For me, GotD has completely overshadowed it. Up until Leon posted the pics, I only remembered us having two game contests lol

The story of BGE2 is 2 things for me:

1. The pain of CT losing to SM64
2. OOT defeating FFVII and definitively establishing Zelda as utterly supreme on this site.

When I think about it a bit more, I also get:

3. RBY's run through the contest to propel it to possibly the #3 spot.
4. The Zelda/Mario/Mario/Mario match. It feels good to be right when everyone thinks you're just being ridiculous in believing that an NES Zelda game can come back from 1400 down in a 4-way with the day vote against an NES Mario game.

Well, maybe you could make an argument for Sephiroth. Maybe. He is responsible for most of the 6 or 7 good things that happen in FF7, so.

Best Game Ever 2009

Castlevania III/Civilization/Sonic the Hedgehog/Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II lost?!?! AGAIN?!?! One of the most mournful day in the board's history. What is this site thinking?!

Gunstar Heroes/Sonic 2/Super Mario Kart/Super Metroid
Sonic was almost universally considered to move on here. What people didn't realize was that Sonic couldn't go through an entire contest without bombing in some fashion, so he let the two SNES games SFF the hell out of each other and go through anyway. What a good sport! (I called this one, one of my only decent calls of this entire blasted contest)

Banjo-Kazooie/Perfect Dark/Pokemon RBY/Zelda: Majora's Mask
Most of the board had Majora finishing in first. All of the board lost their collective **** as the grandaddy of all Pokemon games gave Zelda a beating it was hardly ever used to getting. This one match changed the outlook of the whole contest.

Final Fantasy VIII/SoulCalibur/Starcraft/Xenogears
Starcraft's first match since it's 5-year-old Cinderella run. It got its ass kicked all over the place. zerg rush failed kekekekeke

Call of Duty 4/Pokemon DiamondPearl/Super Mario Galaxy/Team Fortress 2
Total embarrassment for new Nintendo. Pokemon SFF or not, CoD beat the crap out of the same Mario game that easily dispatched it during GotY voting just over a year prior. The ease of its victory surprised all.

Super Mario World/Final Fantasy/Final Fantasy IV/Mega Man 3
Totally incoherent. In R1, Mario World got 55% on the original FF (just the original). In this match, it does much better on the two Final Fantasy games COMBINED. In R1, the original FF got 36.76%. Here, the two FF games combined for 36.71%. They got less percentage as two freakin' games than one of em did against the same damn opponent a round earlier. Inexplicable. Absolutely inexplicable and can only be explained by ridiculous Stand Out Factor and series voting. In my opinion, this match, more than any other in site history, highlights the frailties of the average voter's mind (mine and yours included) and the stupidity of 4ways.

Super Mario 64/Castlevania: SotN/Chrono Trigger/Super Mario World 2
Mario 64 with the shocker. Beating Chrono Trigger would have been impressive enough, but doing it with another Mario game in the poll? Tremendous. And very, very bad for CT and its fans.

Pokemon RBY/Zelda: Majora's Mask/Metal Gear Solid/Pokemon GSC
RBY proves it has major power and can handle SFF by once again easily defeating Majora despite another (decently performing) Pokemon game in the poll. The sky became the limit for RBY, as many wondered if it could reach the finals.

Resident Evil 4/Kingdom Hearts II/Zelda: Twilight Princess/Half-Life 2
Just a super fun three-way race for first between three completely different but great games. Gordon and Valve watched in the background, taking notes and getting stronger.

Super Mario Bros. 3/Sonic the Hedgehog/Super Mario World/Final Fantasy II (IV)
Mario vs. Mario. Bro tops World in a close one. Sonic and Square cry themselves to sleep. Old Nintendo is stupidly stronger than old Square.

Final Fantasy VII/Goldeneye 007/Super Mario 64/Chrono Trigger
After the last round and FFVII splitting with CT here, many (myself included) thought Mario could pull scarily close to FFVII here. It was not to be, as Square's juggernaut stormed out to a huge lead. Mario 64, meanwhile, nearly lost against Chrono Trigger. The two games built up a nice little mini-rivalry here.

Metal Gear Solid/Pokemon RBY/Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Final Fantasy VIII
Pokemon once again proves its mettle by outlasting two of the PS1's strongest games despite Ocarina's fearsome presence. In each of its first three matches, RBY impressed us in a different way.

Super Mario Bros/The Legend of Zelda/Super Mario Bros. 3/Super Mario World
World paid Bros back and arguably leapfrogged past it as the stronger Mario game. That's not why this match is a classic, though. This match is a classic because F*** THIS MATCH. This is where I turned against the cheating bastard plumber for good.

Final Fantasy VII/Zelda: Link to the Past/Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Final Fantasy X
With both games toying with everything in their path, FFVII and Ocarina both looked able to claim the title. There was no favorite anymore, and everyone waited on pins and needles for the two games that ruled all to step up and face each other. In the end, the 4way era ended in a manner all too familiar to the GameFAQs voters.

Zelda actually felt vulnerable up until that match. Before that, the tally was Zelda 6, FFVII 3, L-Block 1. More importantly, Zelda had never won a games contest before, and FFVII was the defending champion and Guru favorite by a large margin. Even our hero Link had just been led by Snake for 6 hours in the previous contest, and actually beaten by L-Block in the contest before that.

FFVII/OOT 2009 was where Link finally ground his iron boots into the faces of Square fans and announced that he was never losing to Square again.

The worst part about that Mario 1/Mario 3/Mario World/Zelda 1 match is that it was pretty obvious that something odd happened in that one update, and so we appealed to Bacon about it, and he replied with "There was nothing weird that I can see from the final 1000 votes."

FFVII was the huge Guru favorite because most people believed either A. FFVII would have nothing holding it back while OoT had LTTP + possibly even another Nintendo game; or B. LTTP would do more damage to OoT than FFX would do to FFVII.

I feel OoT would have been the overall favorite if it was a 1-on-1 contest (or at least it would've been much closer), but stupid 4-ways.

Also, we need some "FFX KILLS R/B/Y!" in our Games Contest highlights~!

That alone probably makes it more notable than, like, at least 100 matches, as does the humor associated with the entrants and their weakness.

RE4/MGS3 and FFX riding the SFF train need to be highlighted from 09 IMO. LoZ/Triple Mario match was the best of the tournament though, no doubt.

I doubt that. FFVII was something like a 4:1 favorite over OOT in the Guru. Plenty of people had FFX getting to the final too. It would probably have been closer with a 1v1, but FFVII would have been the Guru favorite.

Also, people who thought LTTP would stand up to OOT- maybe it would in a normal match, where OOT doesn't need it, but in a finals match where it's up against FFVII- you bet those Nintendo fans are going to fall in line. Aw yeah Republicans, I mean, Nintendo fans.

It only took OOT and SSBM being in the same poll for FFX to beat RBY. It crushed it with the incredibly large victory margin of 53-47.

Ah man, I actually like those two. Very underrated characters. Good point about the votals, though.

My least favorite match will always be SMB1/Zelda/SMB3/World. I hate that match in the same way Ulti hates Brawl > Melee - seeing SMB1 lose so badly to freaking World was bloody painful.

I have faith in the good old Republican Party. The Tea Partiers may drag their feet and scream in protest against nominee Romney, but when it comes down to election day, are they going to vote for Obama instead? Or, will they sit at home and let Obama win? No, however much they make think Romney is not conservative enough for them, they hate Obama even more.

Agh, that SMB3 trickery potentially screwed me over big time. If LOZ had advanced and leeched LTTP badly enough in the following round, SMW could have advanced to the finals and I would have won the Guru, and possibly the entire contest.
