Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

A handheld game contest would be a not so good idea. They're not as popular as console games (as we see in the GOTY polls), and R/B/Y would be the obvious winner barring LINK ALWAYS WINS.

Plus, it'd be tons of SFF because the bracket would be mostly Nintendo.

Why did it take until the last contest for the LAW to be passed?

It's been around longer than that, but last contest was one where we thought anything outside of Smash/FFX/ Western game getting rallied out the wazoo had almost no chance of winning. And Link won anyway.

I always found this match pic funny because of how HUGE Ness is compared to Bowser.

Spring Contest 2004 Famous Match Pics

Still the closest thing we've ever had to Mario/Sonic one-on-one. Not that I think it's stupid or anything.

This is the match pic that led to Ceej letting us make match pics. The uproar over how bad this match pic was became so loud that CJayC basically made a topic that said, "You think you can do better? Have at it."

Character Battle 2007
Axel/Frog/Samus/Kerrigan
After a relatively boring year in 2005 and missing the bracket in 06, Frog resumed doing what he was best known for: making the board **** their pants. Axel used the KH ASV to take the lead, and everything seemed lost... until the CT fanbase and B8 bracket loyalists blasted the Frog theme to decibels unheard and reclaimed the win with minutes to go. This was something special.

Kefka/Marcus Fenix/Tom Nook/Zelos Wilder
Notable because of how totally reamed Kefka got with the day vote. He led Marcus Fenix all night and, IIRC, lost it all in the span of two Luster chugs. Embarrassing but funny; another feather in Kefka's hat.

Cloud/Jill/Zolom/Ocelot
Notable because of Zolomy's (terrible) debut - though he actually held the lead for like four seconds! - and because of Jill/Ocelot, a debated clash that narrowly went to the Revolver. This "notability" will become more clear a year later.

Bowser/Mewtwo/Ryu/Toad
One of the first examples of how SFF and the newly coined "Stand Out Factor" could affect these matches. Despite no new games (the fighting game resurgence was almost two years away), Ryu still easily defeated Bowser, someone who kicked his ass only two years prior.

Bomberman/Crash/Phoenix/Magus
Partially notable for Magus performing like crap (yet another indicator of the CT decline), but mainly for the Phoenix Wright/Bomberman battle. The Board 8 darling held off Bomberman by the skin of his teeth for the entire 24 hours.

Alucard/Liquid/Ness/Zidane
Closest margin of victory in contest history. Alucard and Liquid traded surges and leads all day, keeping everyone's eyes glued. In the final update, Liquid raised the MGS Clutch Flag yet again with a three vote win. Unsure if we'll ever get anything closer. The fact that Alucard totally kicked his ass in the next round makes it so much funnier.

Auron/Shadow/Ryu/Bowser
Really bad contest for Bowser. Some people cited Sonic/Nintendo SFF. Others just claimed Bowser lost a step regardless of format. Bottom line: the Koopa King lost to two guys he would have taken out a mere two years prior.

Mario/Big Boss/Magus/Phoenix
This was the first time we had ever seen Big Boss with a Naked Snake picture, and MAN, what a difference did it make. Boss went from borderline fodder to an instant Top-15 contender by vanquishing Magus with ease.

Link/Vincent/Crono/Zero
Historic, milestone match. This was the first time, in any format, that a Noble 9er tasted defeat. Things looked good for Crono early as he jumped out to an impressive lead out the gate. However, Vincent, being hampered by both the awful FFVII and amazing CT early votes, began clawing back, taking the lead with hours to go. I can't remember the Guru split for this one, but I remember it was close. Vincent left half the board ecstatic and half dejected. Fortunately for him, Crono's shame would be all but forgotten soon.

Dante/Amaterasu/Leon Kennedy/Pikachu
Pikachu takes advantage of Stand Out Factor and his nostalgic sprite (along with Dante and Leon's bad pics) to run away with the shocking victory. Hardly anyone expected Pikachu to even contend with Tidus, let alone get a win this late in the bracket.

Master Chief/Luigi/Pikachu/Dante
Gotta give ol' Chief at least one rep here. The classic choker, Mr. LOL CHIEF himself, destroyed his way through opponent after opponent, earning FOUR easy wins. One of the stars of the contest by far. Even in his loss, he nearly matched Solid freakin' Snake. Microsoft's millions in advertising clearly propelled Chief to new heights.

Every L-Block Match
What more can I say that hasn't already been said, yelled, debated, and run into the ground. Every single L-Block match makes it here. L-Block remains the single most incredible occurrence in contest history. Shaped like a boot TO BE FUN THE FIRST TIME - LET'S NOT SEE THAT AGAIN.

A handheld contest might be neat if it was limited to 64 games and if the format involves 12 hour matches for the first 3 rounds, with 24 hour matches for the last 3 rounds. That would result in a 35 day contest, which would be like a mini-contest (like the Villains Contest) since a handheld contest could end up being boring.

I hadn't played Chrono Trigger yet in 2003 and voted for Mario, which I'll regret for a very long time. I got up at 4 AM to vote before getting on a cross-country flight, and Crono was winning at the time, but unfortunately I missed the rest of the match.

Since this is the 1000 topic here's my top 5 best and worst matches.

Best:

5: Ryu Hayabusa VS Jill Valentine (Close match for TWO days, if only this was worth more points.)
4: Chrono Trigger VS Lttp (Pfff anyone who picked HALO over Starcraft was silly, the battle between the two finest SNES games are the best game match we have ever had.)
3: Guybrush VS Ike VS Gordon VS Duke Nukem (One of the few times where I never cared what the rest of the board said and picked Duke > Gordon and never ever felt it could be any other way.)
2: Ganondorf VS Magus (People thought I was stupid when I said that Magus was top 10 material but now that Ganondorf lost Link won't have chance, right guys?)
1: Mega Man VS Sonic (Finally, my two favourite characters of all time face each other, and it turned out to be the closest match that year.)

Worst:
5: Ryu Hayabusa VS Sora (Augh stupid KH character wins over ultra awesome character.)
4: CATS VS Ansem (We where so close to finally see Cats win, and then the people with terrible taste decided to vote)
3: Kairi VS Clarie Redfield... (Augh stupid KH character that DOES NOTHING wins over the awesome Claire Redfield.)
2: Alucard VS Sora (This match was awesome for the first hour with one of the best characters ever winning over the lame Sora, then the people with horrible taste logged in....)

AND THE WORST MATCH OF ALL IS.................(Yeah I'm sure you all know which I'm talking about)

1: Castlevania VS Kingdom Hearts. (Castlevania is without a doubt one of the best series ever made. When you purchase a Castlevania game in 2D, you know that you will play one of the best games on that system. Castlevania had a huge lead when the people with taste voted, then the kiddies woke up and massrallied for their kiddy series.

I'm thinking that it's probably most casual FFVII fans number 2, because of it's timing.

What is this announcement, again?

FF8 got pretty close to MGS back in 2009, and I wouldn't be surprised if FF8 does better on MGS 1-on-1 than in a 4-way poll, since Zelda, RBY, and FF8 are all rather RPGish. Also, FF8 got closer RBY than the FFX-defeating Majora's Mask did! Granted, Majora's Mask could have been SFFed by RBY, and RBY could have been a similar victim to Ocarina of Time, but I'm just sayin'.

I gotta side with FFX, though.
