Dawn of a New Era!
"Team Rocket!"
"Twerps."
"See, we can name call just as well as you can."

Score: 4/10

Dawn tries to catch a Buneary, but it escapes after she gets into an argument with Ash. What are they arguing about? Nothing. I just watched it and I don’t even remember, which gives you a clue as to how interesting it is to watch. Their argument is interrupted by a Spanish accent, and attached to the accent is Pokemon Bard, Nando. Now, Nando is a bard, with a harp, even, so clearly he needs the most music-related pokemon possible. What’s the pokemon that most reminds you of music? If you’re a writer for Pokemon, it’s Budew.

Dawn asks for a battle with Nando, and loses badly because she doesn’t realize that sunny day empowers solar beam, not that it helps that she tried to use Piplup against a grass type.

Later that day, the heroes go to a pokemon center, and I’ve gotta tell you, it is weird to see Brock not be dragged off when he hits on a Nurse Joy. I never liked him, but at least Max served that purpose, you know? We also learn that Brock only brought Bonsly with him, because bringing something that can actually fight or do anything would make too much sen-- oh wait, Brock didn’t plan to meet Ash and he knows Bonsly is cute enough to pick up chicks. Okay, writers. You win this round, but I’ll get you next time, I swear.

At the center, they bump into Nando again, and as he leaves, Nurse Joy explains his dilemma: he can’t decide whether he wants to enter the contest circuit or the gym league, so he devotes a ton of thought to the subject. Ash and Dawn immediately get into argument about which is better for his Budew, an argument that is even more forced than it sounds.

They decide to go into the forest nearby and find Nando, who admits that he can’t decide. The heroes argue again, and Nando quiets them by telling them to listen to the music of the forest: tons of animals making noise at once. It’s pretty distracting and loud, I have to say. I would rather listen to the heroes argue, honestly.

Ash challenges Nando to a battle, so it’s now Pikachu versus Budew. Pikachu battles much better than Piplup did, and does so well that Budew finally evolves. Despite this, however, Roselia still loses decisively.

Enlivened by both Dawn’s and Ash’s battles, Nando decides to enter both the contests and gym battles in hopes of battling both of the heroes again, because you’re completely irrelevant, Brock. Seriously though, I don’t know why Brock is still in the show, his role as the wiser, older character is no longer necessary and he adds nothing to the group except to be the Voice of Reason.

Gettin' Twiggy With It!
"What's mine is mine and what's yours is too!"
Score: 4.5/10

A Team Rocket plan gone awry results in their balloon crashing to the ground next to a lake, at which is a Turtwig. Turtwig quickly decides to help Pikachu, and blasts Team Rocket off so quickly and effortlessly that I question how they captured Pikachu to begin with.

The heroes arrive, so Dawn attacks the Turtwig, hoping to catch it. Turtwig defends itself, accidentally hitting an Oddish, which accidentally uses sleep powder on Pikachu and Ash. Turtwig, assuming the heroes are as bad as Team Rocket but less easy to blast off, grabs Pikachu and runs away, and because the heroes suck, they are literally outrun by a turtle.

They meet an old lady named Clara who revives Ash, and she explains that Turtwig turned up one day, and spends its time helping any pokemon or person it sees in trouble, occasionally settling problems between two pokemon. Wait, so Turtwig is a four-legged wild grass starter that hangs out in a forest, guiding and mediating disputes between other pokemon and defending them against humans? Are you sure I'm not in season one, writers?

The heroes quickly find Turtwig and Pikachu, and knowing all of this, they very slowly walk toward Pikachu and Turtwig without explaining themselves, and are rewarded for this by a tackle. Well, you can't claim that you didn't deserve it, guys. Pikachu explains, and Turtwig apologizes. Next time, why don’t you try wrapping yourselves in meat and explaining to a Houndoom that you’re not food?

A wounded Linoone appears, and Dawn scans it with her pokedex. It helpfully tells her that Linoone hunt their prey by running at them in straight lines, because normal predators... don't take the most direct route possible?

Everyone takes Linoone to Clara's house, and Brock heals it quickly. Good thing you moved a wounded animal when you already had the resources necessary to heal it where it already was. To no one’s surprise, Turtwig begins to really like Ash and starts getting close to him.

After some Team Rocket shenanigans (in which Ash outswims a submarine), Turtwig now falls in love with Ash. It asks to come along, but insists on a battle.

Pikachu wins. Exciting and unexpected, am I right?

Clara makes Ash promise to take good care of Turtwig, and Ash agrees; after all, it's not like he's ever permanently abandoned a grass starter at Professor Oak’s that was utterly devoted to him beyond the ability to express with words.

I want to wait until Dawn’s first contest to give an official opinion of her, so keep waiting.

Linoone are really bad at making turns so they have to run in an absolutely straight line not just a generally straight path to the target.

Different Strokes For Different Blokes!
"We're known as Team Rocket! The smartest, coolest, onlyest, the lastiest, cheapest... hungriest... stupidest...""
Score: 6.5/10

The heroes bump into Paul, who chides Ash's Turtwig, saying it looks weak. I happen to know that Torterra is universally considered the weakest of all of Ash's fully evolved starters, so, I’ve got to say, it sounds like Paul may know what he’s talking about. Ash challenges Paul to a battle, and when Paul sends out Chimchar, Ash makes the completely logical choice of Turtwig. When Dawn reminds Ash that fire types have the advantage over grass types, he responds that they do, “but not this time.”

I wish there was a way to, through text, throw up my arms in resignation.

Chimchar is extremely fast, and for some reason, Turtwig won't obey Ash's commands to dodge. Before Turtwig can finish losing, Team Rocket interrupts the battle. I do enjoy how Paul interrupts their motto, but the explosion that blasts them off knocks Ash, Paul, Chimchar, and Turtwig down a poorly rendered cliff.
external image

They're still close enough to Brock and Dawn to yell to each other, so everyone agrees to meet at the far side of the forest, save Paul, who simply leaves, telling Ash that he's in Bewilder Forest, and that he should look out for the Stantler. They part, but as Ash tries to get through the forest, a Stantler keeps messing with him using illusions. Finally, Paul simply rescues Ash, catches one of the Stantler, scans it, decides it's worthless, and releases it, telling Ash that friends are useless. Friends may be worthless, but they’re not as worthless as Stantler.

Ash stops for lunch for… some reason, and figures out why Turtwig didn't dodge earlier: it's stubborn. I don’t really see how that makes sense, but okay. Ash tells Turtwig of the importance of dodging and trusting him, and it agrees to do he commands.

They meet up with Brock and Dawn, and get into a fight with a wild Ursaring. Ursaring wins, and hilariously, Paul saves them again, catching the Ursaring and deciding it's worth keeping. Ash taunts him into another battle, and because Turtwig knows to dodge and counter, Chimchar starts spamming dig, so Ash has Turtwig use the holes Chimchar itself dug. This is a bad idea, however, because Paul is actually competent and can counter improvisation, commanding Chimchar to just launch fire attacks down the hole and leave nowhere to dodge. Turtwig battles well, but it all comes down to a tackle versus flame wheel, and, uh, flame wheel wins. You kind of deserved that, Ash.

Like It Or Lup It
"We may have messed up, but we looked great doing it!"
Score: 3/10

Dawn practices with Piplup for the upcoming contest, but it keeps screwing up. Dawn wants a move where it spins around while using bubblebeam, but it gets too dizzy to finish it. It’s too prideful to admit it can’t do it, however, and keeps trying.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket steals a ton of berries from some water pokemon, and accidentally frame some Ludicolo for doing it. Not ones to waste a good situation, they then tell the water pokemon that they have no grounds for accusing the Ludicolo because the evidence isn’t conclusive, beat them up just to be jerks, and leave. Wow, they’re… tremendous pieces of crap. That’s a douche move even by Ash’s standards.

The water pokemon bump into Piplup and explain what happened from their perspective, so it leads them to the Ludicolo to talk while the heroes secretly follow and watch. Piplup tries to confront the Ludicolo, but they don’t take it seriously and kick its ass.

Team Rocket shows up and capture all of the pokemon present, including Pikachu, except Piplup using their submarine. Ash easily sends out Swellow and Turtwig to nah it’s all up to Piplup. It tries to fight, but Team Rocket’s submarine has hundreds of missiles that prevent it from getting close enough to the submarine to do anything (though what it could even do to a submarine to begin with is beyond me). As it’s pelted by missiles and too weak to stand, Dawn gives a stirring speech (looks like Ash's style is no longer “his and his alone”), which gives it the strength to successfully use the contest move, spinning and using bubblebeam at the same time, destroying all of the missiles. It then creates a hurricane around the submarine using the same move even though that doesn’t make any sense. The submarine explodes, and the berries fly into the air.

The water pokemon realize that the Ludicolo were innocent all along, blahblah, blastingoffaaagaaaiiin.

I have to say, guys, I kind of like Piplup so far. It’s been seven episodes and while it’s screwed up several times, it’s kind of entertaining and at least it has more personality than most pokemon.

Gymbaliar!
"Dustox got dusted!"
Score: 3/10

Team Rocket has set up a fake gym, at which they trick trainers into coming to battle them. Losers have their pokemon taken for “special training” to empower them, but of course, they are simply stolen.

Meowth is wandering the nearby town when he sees a Croagunk. He tries to ignore it, but it follows him to the gym. Croagunk tells Team Rocket that they're boring, and it wants to do something fun, so Jessie agrees to use it in the gym.

Cut to the heroes, who run into a Scizor and its trainer, Minnie, in the forest. Minnie is searching for the newly-opened gym, and everyone agrees to travel together.

First up is Minnie, who defeats Croagunk is about twenty seconds. But James, who's acting the referee, intentionally takes so long to call Croagunk's loss that it has time to recover from fainting. Using poison sting and poison jab against the steel-type Scizor, Croagunk pulls off a victory and Scizor is taken for special training.

Everyone decides to have lunch before the Ash/Jessie battle, a lunch break that lasts as long as a commercial break. The next scene is Ash versus Jessie, so-- that entire lunch break thing was pointless. Gotcha.

Croagunk versus Aipom. Aipom barely wins, but yet again, James intentionally takes so long to make the call so Croagunk can revive. But Croagunk can't revive anyway because it's too hurt, so Ash still wins. How necessary. Jessie quickly changes the rules so that you need to win two battles in a row to win and throws out Dustox, and when Ash tries to use Turtwig, Jessie claims that as gym leader, she gets to choose the challenger's pokemon, and chooses Pikachu. As soon as Pikachu enters the arena, it's grabbed by a robotic hand and taken to the balloon: Jessie had expected Ash to choose Pikachu instead of Aipom to begin with, and waited the entire battle for this.

They escape in their balloon, but decide to leave Croagunk behind because its inflating cheeks creep Jessie out (this is canon, people). Starly and Pikachu blast Team Rocket off, and Minnie agrees to wait for all of the pokemon trainers to come back and give them their pokeballs so the heroes can continue their journey.

Croagunk and Brock share a moment of... I don't even know how to describe what I'm watching here. They just kind of look into each other’s eyes, I guess? But it’s weirder than that; watch the episode. Croagunk allows itself to be caught, but it now takes Misty's and Max's place as the person who stops Brock from hitting on women, this time by using poison jab instead of grabbing his ear.

As the episode ends, the narrator proudly declares that “Truth is stranger than fiction,” something that has absolutely nothing to do with the episode in any way at all.

True, but that's less because of the constant deadly poison he's exposed to and more the result of the show's characters staying in stasis even though they acknowledge the passing of years.

Setting The World On Its Buneary!
"Maybe hunger will make us hungier."
Score: 4/10

external image
A Buneary falls in love with Pikachu. While chasing Aipom, Pikachu runs to a nearby dirt road and is almost hit by an Officer Jenny traveling too fast to avoid it, but Buneary saves it at the last second. Jenny chews out Ash for letting Pikachu run into the road; hey, Jenny, maybe you should consider not going seventy miles an hour on a dirt road with one lane? Just sayin’. She then tells the heroes that Team Rocket is in the area and up to no good.

Dawn and Ash both want to catch Buneary, but Ash allows her to try first. Buneary kicks Piplup’s ass, and as it does so, constantly flirts with Pikachu, who simply doesn't get that Buneary is interested in it. After Piplup loses, Ash challenges Buneary with Pikachu, but it refuses to fight it because of its crush.

Well, Team Rocket grabs both pokemon, but Officer Jenny shows up again. Everyone acts like this is a huge advantage in the heroes’ favor even though Jenny proceeds to do nothing, and indeed, what did they expect her to do?

Pikachu breaks both of them out of Team Rocket’s cages, Dawn saves Buneary from a nasty fall, and Officer Jenny attempts to arrest Team Rocket, but they simply run away. Good work, there, Jenny.

Dawn offers to let Buneary come along with them, and while Buneary agrees, you would assume it would want to come with Ash, as it's in love with his pokemon. But nope! Apparently it’s just as happy coming with Dawn.

Not On MY Watch Ya Don't!
"But that's not nice!"
Score: 3/10

The heroes have finally reached Jubilee City, and Dawn wants to get a Poketch, which is basically a watch with iPhone aps. I do like how the advertisement for them features Krystal from Crystal, that's actually clever.

Sadly, the Poketch Store is out; a representative from the company took them all back. As Dawn mopes, she runs into a disguised Team Rocket, who are selling counterfeit Poketchs. They give one to each of the heroes, and as they sit at the park admiring their new items, a Shinx angrily yells at them. Shinx's owner, a small child, shows up and tells the heroes that they have fake Poketchs. How did he know? He’s the son of the head of the Poketch Corporation. And I guess he takes them to his father in the headquarters, because his father has nothing better to do than talk to teenagers. He explains that he was the one who recalled all of the real Pokechs, because of the counterfeits in circulation. Uh... I don't understand how that makes sense? Wouldn’t you want at least some real ones out there so your reputation isn’t oh whatever.

He can't sell any more real Poketchs until the fake ones are dealt with, but he does offer to use a poketch to measure how much each of the heroes’ pokemon love them. Pikachu adores Ash, but Croagunk loves Brock even more, and once again, Brock and Croagunk share a moment. I don’t-- I don’t really get what’s up here. Sadly, Piplup only kinda likes Dawn, which surprises even it, and the Poketch kid (he never says his name) taunts Dawn about it.

As the heroes sleep at the pokecenter, they see all of the pokemon, except for their own, exit. Cut to the head of the Poketch Corporation, who's dismantling the fakes. The fake Poketchs have a low-frequency Psyduck voice being transmitted that hypnotizes pokemon, causing them to enter a cage owned by, of course, Team Rocket.

As the heroes and Poketch guy show up, Team Rocket captures Pikachu and Piplup and escape. Buneary tries to stop them, but its ice beam doesn't extend far enough. Dawn has it concentrate for a moment before using it, and this time it hits the balloon, dropping it to the ground. What Ash doesn't tell you is that if it had failed, he would have just had Starly fix the problem in two seconds. Blastingoffaaaaagain, and the Poketch kid compliments Dawn and apologizes for being a jerk earlier, and Dawn gets a real Poketch from his father.

Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy arrive just in time to do nothing (why did Nurse Joy come along?). Brock outdoes himself this time, hitting on both of them. I have to admit, a fifteen year-old trying to get two older women into a threesome? Brock must have enormous balls.

Mounting a Coordinator Assault!
"Wearing a dress in a new one on me."
Score: 7/10

Oh, Ash. You, Brock, and I all know that's not true.

Dawn is getting ready for her contest, but loses the choker for her dress. It's found by a girl who's definitely not a lesbian, Zoey.
external image

Aipom begs Ash to use it in a contest, revealing that it secretly practiced a double team/swift combo to make a fancy huge star made out of swift. Now, anyone who wasn’t a complete douche would realize how much this means to Aipom and, knowing that contests aren’t really his thing, simply give Dawn his Aipom, since Dawn would be able to make it happier than he can, especially since, and let’s just be honest here, Aipom is a terrible battler. But I think we all know what Ash is by this point.

The next day, the contest begins. May meets Zoey again, and maybe I’m just reading too much into things, but Zoey is so gay. Not as gay as Harley or James, of course, but no one can reasonably compare to them.

Anyway, our hostess for the season is evidently Marian, who looks like Lillian and Vivian, but never claims to be their sister or anything, so I don't know.
external image

Zoey is up first, and her Misdreavus does extremely well, demonstrating its speed, skill, and power. Jessie (as "Jesselina") uses James' Carnivine. Why does she trust Carnivine of all things? I have no idea. For a finale, Carnivine bites Jessie's head. Marian assumes this is intentional and declares it the "penultimate in dramatic flair," showing once and for all that you can get a job as a writer without knowing what "penultimate" means. I want you to know that. There is, somewhere out there, a man who got a job writing for this show who does not know the difference between “ultimate” and “penultimate.” This man is not hypothetical, he not my own invention, he really does exist, and he may or may not have since learned the difference between those two words.

Anyway, Ash and Aipom do well, using as much CGI as Japanese computers can offer. Why didn’t they do Aipom’s original trick with the huge star? I have no idea. Dawn is up next, and has Piplup use bubblebeam and then peck all of the bubbles.

The episode ends just before we learn who’s advancing to round 2… but I’m willing to bet it’s Ash, Dawn, Jessie, and Zoey.

Arrival of a Rival
"And soon, I'll rule the contest world and take over the galaxy!"
Score: 6.5/10

The second round contestants will be, in this order: Brown-Haired Extra, Zoey, Dawn, Brown-Haired Extra, Purple-Haired Extra, Ash, Brown-Haired Extra, and Jessie. Zoey is strong and all, but personally, I think Dawn really needs to watch out for Brown-Haired Extra.

When Zoey learns that Ash is in the Sinnoh League, she chews him out for not knowing the difference between contest battles and gym battles. Hey, Zoey, I don't know how to tell you this, but Ash actually tied for victory in a contest already. It was kind of the season finale last time, weren't you watching?

First up is Ash versus Zoey, Aipom versus Glameow. Aipom spams swift, which Glameow dodges. You know, this really bothers me. I'm normally pretty okay with the show bending the rules of the game, I know I joke about it a lot, but I'll ultimately accept it. My problem is that the show is so inconsistent about whether swift can be dodged. It changes every damn episode. Anyway, Ash does some damage, but Zoey stays ahead of him the entire time. At the last second, Ash tries an extra-power focus punch that would have won the battle for him, but just barely runs out of time. After the battle, Zoey admits that Ash is good, but he should stick to gyms, and upon learning that he only entered for Aipom’s sake, she tells the heroes that Dawn should raise Aipom. This is an idea that will not be mentioned again in the episode for some reason.

It's now Dawn versus Zoey, Buneary versus Glameow. Zoey's able to use shadow claw, a ghost move, against Buneary's ice beam; even though it's useless against normal-type pokemon, it can be used indirectly. Buneary wins every direct fight, but Glameow's constant indirect attacks and use of the stage ultimately-- oh time runs out and Zoey wins. That's boring.

Dawn calls her mom and starts crying, and her mom tells her to cry to her friends, not to her. Wow, that's-- that's super cold.

Anyway, after twenty seconds of Jessie easily losing to Zoey, we end the episode with Zoey winning the ribbon. Good for her.

Well, I think it’s time to say what I think of Dawn. I don’t really like her. Misty was loud and frustrating, but she was Ash’s equal. May was cute and ditzy. Dawn is just, well, a determined newbie. That’s her only personality so far. She’s not much different from Ash in season one, actually, except that Ash is the eternal determined newbie, no matter how good he gets, which makes that characterization of Dawn’s kind of superfluous, and she has no real characterization beyond that. “Tsundere” isn’t much, but it’s something. Dawn is just, I don’t know, insecure. I hope she gets better.

I wonder what the fullest topic that didn't reach 500 was? Was there really a 499 topic somewhere out there?

Zoey: Totally not a butch lesbian.

And actually, this won't be the only time she calls out a male for not being totally focused on contest battles.

Butch? I don't know about that, though I do like how they have her dressed in extremely male clothing right next to Dawn in a fancy, pink dress.
