How many Rangers do they have assigned to protecting the owner of In N Out from McDonald’s-brand assassins, whose job it is to slip a knife between his ribs and make sure a whisper of “We love to see you smile” is the last thing he hears?

While this snippet is utterly hilarious, I'm sorry to inform you that Mickey D's hasn't used that as there slogan for years- literal YEARS. After "We love to see you smile" came "Put a smile on" and their current slogan is "I'm lovin' it." And I'm probably forgetting one or two in between. :P

So, how many different kinds of royalty has Ash been at some point now? I'm pretty sure that by some point he'll be able to just lay claim to the entire planet with all of his titles remembered by some random faction or other.

Also, what was the name of the Pokemon movie which you actually liked?

Pokemon movies that I gave a 5/10 or better to:
Pokemon Heroes Latios & Latias
Pokemon Jirachi: Wish Maker
Pokemon Destiny Deoxys
Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

Really? Damn. I haven't eaten at McDonalds since I was fourteen, when a science teacher made us do an experiment where we left out a cheeseburger to see how long it took it to show visible signs of degrading. Apparently they put so many preservatives into McDonald's food that the answer is "years," though the experiment only lasted a few months.

Following a Maiden's Voyage!
"Load and lock; let's rock!"
Score: 4/10

We begin in a ten year-old girl's bedroom, as she quietly moans to herself under the covers. Okay, Japan. Dawn is excited to begin her pokemon journey, telling her mother (who should already know all of this) that her dream is to become a top coordinator just like her. Like all people from cold, snowy regions, Dawn dressed slightly more conservatively than a lesbian vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
external image
Well, at least the writers have established that Dawn is nothing like May. May, you see, is a klutzy ten year-old girl with a unique hat and a parent who’s well known for being an excellent pokemon trainer, who ultimately chose a pokemon based on a bird for her starter and had her bike destroyed by Ash.

Okay, so let's say you're a mother. Your daughter wants to go on an adventure, and packs a bag of what she considers to be only the most necessary of supplies. In the bag, you find a French Maid outfit.
external image
If you’re a responsible mom, you tell your daughter that she’s not ready for this, go finish fifth grade first and then we’ll talk. If you're Dawn's mom, you tell her the French Maid outfit is a little unnecessary. What’s especially weird is that she gives Dawn a much a smaller backpack that clearly is too tiny to have a change of clothes. It’s like… what? Do you expect Dawn to wear one outfit for the next three or four seasons?

She gives Dawn her first championship ribbon, telling her it's a good luck charm, and Dawn asks what it is even though, as it's one of her mother's greatest trophies and she's intensely interested in pokemon coordination, she couldn't not already know what it is. Dawn sets off on her bike and almost immediately kills herself by running into a rock, but rides on, her mother silently telling herself that there's at least a chance Dawn won't get killed in the first week.

Dawn makes it to the next town and just so happens to run into Rowan himself. He's no-nonsense and immediately takes Dawn to his lab, and oh man, he may just be the first competent professor. It’s true that he doesn’t have a lot of screen time, but he makes no truly idiotic decisions in the small amount of time he does have, unlike everyone else with the title of professor.

Before they arrive at the lab, however, all of the pokemon except a Turtwig escape, including the starters. Dawn begs Rowan to let her search for them, and quickly locates Piplup. Unfortunately, it and several wild pokemon get caught in an Ariados web. So, uh... Would Ariados have eaten Piplup? Can spiders even digest penguin meat? I now sincerely wonder this. Hilariously, Dawn rescues only Piplup, leaving all of the trapped wild pokemon to die. “Cycle of Life, guys. I hope you get reincarnated as Growlithes!”

The two are now chased by dozens of Ariados, and Dawn gets webbed up. She tells Piplup to run for it, so it of course does the opposite and uses bide to take all of the attacks and counter. The effort exhausts it, however, so Dawn takes Piplup to Rowan’s lab, first stopping at Lake Verity. Out of the lake comes one of the Legendary Boring Identical Tiny Pieces of Crap, I think Mesprit, but I'm not sure. At the lab, Rowan tells her that it's not impossible, unlike what Oak told Ash about Ho-Oh when he claimed to see Articuno (remember that?). Rowan offers Dawn any of the starter pokemon, so Dawn of course chooses the one that already had significant screen time. “Sorry Chimchar, I’m not even really sure how you got back to the lab.”

Cut to Ash on the boat. Man, nineteen minutes into the episode, this is probably the latest we'll ever see Ash enter the episode. Team Rocket does its thing and steals Pikachu, but declines to do the motto because it's a waste of energy when there's only one main character around. Because it's not like they've done the motto when they were by themselves. I was honestly expecting Aipom to solve the problem and win the day, but no. No, Wobbuffet accidentally destroys the balloon, throwing Pikachu into a nearby forest just as a To Be Continued pops up.

It’s too early to tell what I’ll think of Dawn, but first impressions are not kind to her, I’ll say that.

Two Degrees of Separation!
"Now it's time to show you why Team Rocket is feared by lots of little kids all over the Kanto region!"
Score: 5/10

Oh God, they put no effort into this opening theme. I could write a better one, and the only thing I know about music is that I don't know anything about music.

Dawn decides that the most likely thing for a new pokemon trainer to do is catch new pokemon. Well, makes sense to me. She quickly spots and attacks a Buneary, but Piplup gets its ass kicked, so they continue. Dawn spends a while talking to Piplup about how much she wants to be a coordinator like her mom. I'm afraid I can't really empathize with you there, Dawn. My dad is a real estate lawyer who spends most of his time looking over documents to make sure they're worded unambiguously and setting up meetings to go over said documents with other lawyers. Gotta say, it never really appealed to me.

She runs into a Burmy, and while Piplup battles it valiantly, Dawn forgets to actually throw a pokeball. As Burmy escapes, Ash's Pikachu shows up wandering through the forest, so Dawn attacks it because she thinks it's wild. And predictably, even though it's exhausted and hurt, Pikachu obliterates Piplup and also destroys Dawn's bike because why not, I’m a Pikachu. When her pokeball bounces off of it, she realizes it's already someone's pokemon, and freaked out, it runs away, only to bump into Team Rocket's pokemon. After Team Rocket attacks the already wounded Pikachu, Dawn makes a startling discovery. "Those guys can't be friends!"

Thus, she sends Piplup to help, and yes, the level 5 Piplup does make all the difference. As Team Rocket blasts off again (though this is the first time Dawn has ever seen someone blast off, shouldn’t she be freaking out that people are apparently as lightweight as bubble wrap?), Pikachu is now too hurt and exhausted to move, so Dawn takes it to a pokemon center and tells Rowan the whole thing.

Cut to Ash and Aipom, who reach Rowan's lab. Rowan mentions Dawn finding a lost Pikachu, but by the time Ash calls Nurse Joy, Dawn has already left to search for Pikachu's trainer. Ash runs to search for Dawn. Dawn comes back to the pokemon center and learns of Ash, so she, Piplup, and Pikachu leave to meet him. Even though she could easily just wait at the pokemon center for him.

Cut to Team Rocket, who just happen to bump into one of James' summer cottages. Well, uh, that's something, I guess. James search nostalgically, and finds a pokeball with his childhood playmate in Sinnoh: Carnivine-- wait, that Carnivine sat in its pokeball inside of a box since James was a kid? Pokeballs can just keep non-ghost pokemon, pokemon that presumably need to eat, entombed for years at the very least?

Well, James' butler calls his family without asking him and only then tells him, so his parents and Jezebel are on the way. Unwilling to face Jezebel, James decides he has to leave, so they call Giovanni for permission to set up a Sinnoh Team Rocket branch (he gives it because he doesn’t know who they are, even though they apparently have enough clearance to directly call him without any secretaries in the way or anything) and leave.

Cut to Ash, who's walking to the pokemon center when a truck pulls up, and out jumps Brock. Brock is just saying "hi," though, and doesn't intend to rejoin Ash. You see, he's just hitchhiking with Claudina, the driver, and has been since Pewter City (it’s implied he’s just going wherever she goes for the sake of going with her). Just then, Claudina gets a call from her boyfriend and tells Brock that she no longer has time to drive him, so he agrees to just come with Ash because why not, at least he'll get to meet the Nurse Joys of the region.
external image

They run into a Starly, and deciding a flying type will be useful to search for Pikachu from the air (even though he could have asked for Noctowl or Swellow to be sent to him at Rowan’s lab), Ash has Aipom battle it and he catches it. Wow, I can see Sinnoh is really shaping up to be different from the other seasons. After all, Ash only caught his normal/flying type in the third episode of Kanto.

Paul is amazing on so many levels. His dialogue is written better, he's actually credible as a threat to Ash (unlike Trip, goddamn), the buildup is great, a certain subplot of the rivalry - without wanting to spoil anything - is exceptional, it has an amazing sort of slowburn and by far the most satisfying payoff of any arc in the series, including Charizard ripping Gary to pieces.

It's not without its flaws but I could talk for a long time about Ash/Paul as a rivalry. It's the most well-executed, well-written, well-plotted, well-animated, well-planned arc/rivalry/story of the series, something they haven't bettered before or since. It's like they took "character development and intelligent planning" pills for a couple of years.

When Pokemon Worlds Collide!
"We been in Pikachu pursuit since you've been alive!"
Score: 6/10

Ash and Brock see a huge electric attack off in the distance, so they rush to it, hoping it's Pikachu. It is not, sadly, it's merely Paul and his Elekid. Paul chides Ash's Starly for being weak and reveals that he owns three Starly; his philosophy is to catch multiple pokemon of the same type and determine which is the strongest, and then let the others go. Ash opposes this method because he thinks any pokemon can be strong if it’s trained well, and while he’s right, that doesn’t mean Paul is wrong. Paul defends his actions because two of his Starly only know tackle and sand-attack, whereas the third nets him those moves plus aerial ace. In any case, Paul declines to battle with Ash when he learns he only has two pokemon.

Off in the distance, Ash and Brock hear a volt tackle, and realizing that there probably aren't any other Pikachu in the vicinity, they rush forward. Cut to Team Rocket in a giant robot that is, as always, immune to electricity. Piplup's attacks are also ineffective, but Ash arrives just in time to attack using Aipom's swift and Starly's whirlwind. Good thing it knew whirlwind, eh? Imagine if it had only known tackle and sand-attack, it might have been too weak to help.

Team Rocket counters with their new motto, which... is eh. I'm sorry, I know it's wrong of me, but I can't give any motto a chance except the original one, it's absolutely better than the replacements. Tell me I'm wrong or unfair if you want, but I stand by what I said.

Ash jumps onto the robot (fortunately, Ash can jump sixty or seventy feet when he needs to), which impresses Dawn. After a short fight, Team Rocket's robot explodes, blasting off again, everyone reunites, and Pikachu meets Starly.
external image
Everyone decides to go back to Rowan's lab after they call him in phone booth (those even still exist?), and as the heroes leave, Paul silently looks over the remains of Team Rocket's robot.

At Rowan's, Ash receives a package from his mom: new clothes, that are actually not as thick and warm as his old clothes. Dawn hears that Ash and Brock are heading through Jubilee City, which is her destination, so everyone agrees to travel together. As the heroes leave the lab, Paul challenges Ash, and even though Pikachu literally knows nothing about Paul at all, it violently goes "Pika..." as Paul challenges him. Paul is amused by the way Ash speaks, "like a little kid," and man, it's true. Ash’s old voice actor was better for that, though.

We begin with Starly versus Starly. Starly uses quick attack, but Starly takes the hit easily. Starly counters with an attack of its own, but Starly uses wing attack, only for Starly to use double team. Starly's ploy works perfectly, and Starly loses.

... Fine I'll make that clearer. Ash's Starly loses. Paul tells Ash that his strategy is terrible and complains that his own Starly didn't do well enough.

Aipom versus Chimchar. Aipom takes a lot of damage, but eventually lands a focus punch and OHKOs Chimchar. Paul curses Chimchar for losing.

It's now Pikachu versus Elekid. Elekid is supercharged by Pikachu's electric attacks, a strategy that some Orange Islands guy used on Pikachu way back, that you would think Ash would remember. Ultimately, an iron tail and a thunder punch land at the same time, and Elekid and Pikachu collapse together, resulting in a tie. Paul releases his Starly, deciding that he can just grab a new, stronger one because they're so common, which angers Ash.

Okay, first impressions of Paul: he’s okay. While his insults to Ash are kind of entertaining, it just comes off as weird. Gary’s crude insults to Ash were fine because Ash was a no name beginner back then. At this point, Ash has placed in the Top Sixteen and Top Eight twice in three separate leagues, defeated the Orange Islands League and the Battle Frontier, and gotten multiple new hats. Paul may not know any of this, but, well, that’s his problem. At least Max had the decency to say that Ash was just lucky when he criticized him, it just seems strange for Ash to take this kind of criticism when he has like a dozen pokemon that could ruin everything Paul owns without blinking. With all of that said, Paul’s insults at least criticize actual failings of Ash, and he does seem serious enough as a threat that I can accept him as a rival, so we’ll see how he pans out.

Interesting.

What do you think of his catching/releasing Pokemon strategy? I personally look at Paul as a kind of "take that" to serious competitive players (yes, including myself to an extent) - the ones who breed their way to perfection and just release the ones not up to standard.

I think Ash changes his training and strategies just a little as time goes by. Imo they tried to show Ash improving and changing as Paul did - and they didn't fully succeed, but you can see what they tried to do.

Oh no it's true. I can't deny that I actually did not like Piplup the first time I saw it (when the Gen 4 starter art was released), but watching Fathead make a fool of itself just reinforced my negativity toward it tenfold. Thing is, the Water type starters had always been my favorite of every generation. In Crystal (first game I played), Totodile was just a cut above Cyndie or Chikie. Squirtle was adorable, and yes, I liek Mudkipz. Oshawott was also my instant favorite despite all the Smugleaf hype. First time I saw Piplup I was like... nah... Wasn't particularly thrilled with Chimchar or Turtwig either, but that was the first and so far only time I did not instantly love the water starter. And to thus day, Gen 4 is the only gen I have not played even a moment of because none of the starters appeal to me.

But enough of that. Dawn's Piplup is awful. Just awful!

Just awful!

Water types are okay. In terms of overall design,
Squirtle > Charmander > Bulbasaur
Cyndaquil > Totodile > Chikorita
Torchic > Treecko > Mudkip
Piplup > Chimchar > Turtwig
Smugleaf > Tepig > Oshawott

Despite this, I took Oshawott in Gen 5 because I liked Lilligant more than Smugleaf and Tepig's evolutions are so bad.

I guess Starly IS pretty derp, but starts getting great once it evolves into Staravia, and it gets excellent once it evolves into Staraptor.

Look at your quote. Now look at mine. Sadly, your quote isn't mine, but if you watch Adventure Time, it could SMELL like mine. I'm on a rainicorn!

I think most would agree Ash's final Sinnoh team to be the most competent one.

Yeah, Piplup's pretty bad. Completely incompetent, overconfident, loud and annoying--basically, he's a Pokémon version of Ash.

But yeah, this series is pretty good. A lot of character development; more awesome Pokémon but they don't automatically guarantee wins the way Charizard did, and Dawn and her rival have perhaps even more romantic tension than May and Drew did...except that Dawn's rival is a girl, albeit one who is always seen in boys' clothing.

And trust me, Starly doesn't stay derpy for long. Actually, Aipom becomes a decent character eventually as well, but...well, I won't spoil it, but in a stunning turn of events, the writers actually did a good job foreshadowing something.

Look, what can I say? It directly, straight-up loses to both another Starly and to Aipom. It does defeat Team Rocket, but hell, Misty's Poliwag once defeated Team Rocket.

We're creating expectations. Not sure why, having you find out would be more fun.
