Mounting a Coordinator Assault!
"Wearing a dress in a new one on me."
Score: 7/10

Oh, Ash. You, Brock, and I all know that's not true.

Dawn is getting ready for her contest, but loses the choker for her dress. It's found by a girl who's definitely not a lesbian, Zoey.

Aipom begs Ash to use it in a contest, revealing that it secretly practiced a double team/swift combo to make a fancy huge star made out of swift. Now, anyone who wasn’t a complete douche would realize how much this means to Aipom and, knowing that contests aren’t really his thing, simply give Dawn his Aipom, since Dawn would be able to make it happier than he can, especially since, and let’s just be honest here, Aipom is a terrible battler. But I think we all know what Ash is by this point.

The next day, the contest begins. May meets Zoey again, and maybe I’m just reading too much into things, but Zoey is so gay. Not as gay as Harley or James, of course, but no one can reasonably compare to them.

Anyway, our hostess for the season is evidently Marian, who looks like Lillian and Vivian, but never claims to be their sister or anything, so I don't know.

Zoey is up first, and her Misdreavus does extremely well, demonstrating its speed, skill, and power. Jessie (as "Jesselina") uses James' Carnivine. Why does she trust Carnivine of all things? I have no idea. For a finale, Carnivine bites Jessie's head. Marian assumes this is intentional and declares it the "penultimate in dramatic flair," showing once and for all that you can get a job as a writer without knowing what "penultimate" means. I want you to know that. There is, somewhere out there, a man who got a job writing for this show who does not know the difference between “ultimate” and “penultimate.” This man is not hypothetical, he not my own invention, he really does exist, and he may or may not have since learned the difference between those two words.

Anyway, Ash and Aipom do well, using as much CGI as Japanese computers can offer. Why didn’t they do Aipom’s original trick with the huge star? I have no idea. Dawn is up next, and has Piplup use bubblebeam and then peck all of the bubbles.

The episode ends just before we learn who’s advancing to round 2… but I’m willing to bet it’s Ash, Dawn, Jessie, and Zoey.
