Well, it's going to get an automatic berth after winning its conference tournament

Probably because every time it's beaten an opponent that's even halfway decent it's been by like one vote, and it sucks at getting blowouts. It's pretty telling when a game is 12-2 and not in the RPI top 30.

Also, I think that I am speaking for everyone as I am asking this but where in the RPI is MVP Baseball 2005 now?
I've done this all but ONE time, where I voted for StarCraft over Super Metroid because I was playing through StarCraft at the time and I knew it was going to lose anyway (ironically enough, that match was probably StarCraft's best one all contest).
Oh man what's going to happen to poor Ocarina of Time, being faced with both Mario Galaxies in back-to-back weeks?

Wow.
Yeah, didn't even notice that. Metroid Eater disguises it better by having a few high-caliber games (whereas the second-place game in Smash Trigger is 8-6), but that is an obnoxiously weak conference. Let's see...as of the end of Day 83, Metroid Eater was 63-103 and Smash Trigger was 63-104. Not going to bother counting up what the apparent final results are (besides, I'm not allowed to talk about them), but as of the update that you yourself put in the topic and is therefore fair game to talk about, Halo 2 (Metroid Eater) was way behind while Mega Man Legends (Metroid Eater) and Star Ocean (Smash Trigger) both had small leads. So They're probably about even for worst conference record overall--and nothing else is even remotely close, with Thousand-Year World of Sunshine being the only other one that's even got 90 losses or fewer than 80 wins (76-91, with one game active on Day 84).

Hmm...that's right, SMB3 was actually facing a strong opponent. That's even more troublesome, because already I know that I really feel like Chrono Trigger is stronger than SM64, but the natural inclination is to go with the status quo unless something big happens, and the biggest thing that happened this week was ALttP--a CT opponent--getting upset. And "status quo" would be to leave CT behind SMB3...

Actually, that would be stupid because CT would wreck FFVI directly, it already beat Mario 3, and it's undefeated as opposed to having two losses.
If you think that's the "status quo," then you have problems.
Although I knew you would do this. I even mentioned it to swirl that you would somehow consider a 2 vote win over FFVI compelling enough to vote Mario 3 over CT.

The next week, it literally comes two votes away from defeating Super Mario Bros. 3. If I had voted for FFVI, it would've forced a tiebreaker! But that's okay, Mario 3 is the better game anyway (note, there are only three games in this contest which I'd vote for FFVI over, and Chrono Trigger is the only one of those three which has yet to face FFVI).
I can only hope this means good things for it against FFIX next week!

No, I find it compelling enough to not move Chrono Trigger ahead of Mario 3, which I voted ahead of CT last week. However, with SM64 now looking directly weaker than CT, and only managing to stay ahead of it due to ALttP dropping the ball, it was obvious enough to move SMB3 to the #1 spot, even though I know it doesn't belong there.

The RPI respects a good blowout from time to time. FFVII launches onto the board thanks to one of those. FFVI falls after its loss to SMB3, which becomes the second Mario game in the Top 4.

Oh wow that is one serious slide down, FFVI! Knowing FFVI though, it'll just be back in the 15-20 range after it once again decided to do what it does best (hand a game its first or second loss in a match where there wasn't much warning), and then it'll kill Metroid Prime for revenge to finally enter the 15-20 range.
Actually, I think I'm going to start a little analysis on everything in the RPI top 30. Nice to see Final Fantasy VII finally arrive! Somehow I doubt it'll be here for long though...
