Welcome to the results topic for Board 8's Top 20 Projects of ALL TIME!
Initially it was going to be 50, but due to unfortunately a low votal turnout, I have had to tune it down to 20 to make the list a bit more viable.
Voting lasted a month in which users had to vote for ten of their favourite projects in a +10 to +1 list fashion. There was a whopping total of 26 voters, so thanks to those of you that contributed, and 93 projects in total were voted for.
I asked the creators of the top 20 projects to construct a write up for their projects if they so wished and so far 12 have complied, which gives us some very good and lengthy write ups.
To those of you that have not yet written one (Icehawk, yoblazer, Kaxon, MWIS, Holy Excalibur, NGamer, raytan) you still have time so please get them to me ASAP, as i know some of you have said to me that you have planned to write one. It doesnt have to be long, just makes it more personalised than if I do the write up for you.
Right... Lets get to it! Next up is a little treat, its the projects that didn't QUITE make it. From 50 to 21.

It should be a top 25 just so we get a write-up about Mac & WVI's fetishes (and B8BL, Mafia, Random Spell Tourney, and whatever drops down from creativename/gamefaqscontests jumping into the top twenty, but mostly the fetish topic).
It would have cracked the top 20 for sure had more stats guys voted. Truth be told, I can't even remember how I voted. I just did it early and realized immediately that I forgot tons of worthy contests, but I never changed it.

Hell, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know.. My WCW watchthrough topic: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/57994703
If they are the same then I should probably tweek the list.... And make it a Top 21. As i'd feel bad now if Legend of Snake drops out because of it, EVEN THOUGH MWIS refused to do a write up and i know nothing about it!
Ok, after combining creativenames poll updater and the gamefaqscontests.com votes in to one, things have shifted about a bit, but not much, but it did get in to the top 20.
So we'll start at 21.
~ 21. Legend of Snake ~ Created by: MyWorldIsSquare List Appearances: 3 Total points: 21
I unfortunately don't know much about this project, and as i didn't get a write up from MWIS this is likely going to be an awful start. From what i gather though, it seems to be a story of epic proportions! Just by looking at the website I can tell a mass amount of effort has gone in to this, and as far as writing projects go its gotta be up there on volume of content alone.
I know this was started a few years ago, but MWIS eventually stopped it when he left the board for a while, but it now seems to be back in fairly full flow, and I can tell by looking at the topic that the fans of the project are really excited about it, so it'll definately be interesting to see how it turns out.
49. solarshadow's Contest Stats and Discussion: I've been a part of a few subgroups on B8, and the stats topic has been one of the most unfriendly of the lot. I've never been the best with stats, and I remember people (especially the 'legendary' creativename) flat-out insulting me when I asked noobish questions. That obviously doesn't reflect on everyone: a lot of the regulars are quite welcoming, but I got severely turned off by that experience. Apart from that, it seems like the stats topic is prone to overexaggeration (see people calling a match within the first 15 minutes) and heavy reliance on numbers (see the entire 'lol xstats' meme). It deserves a fair bit of credit for being probably the longest-running, most successful thing in B8 history.
I'm sorry to hear that we were unfriendly. I think the topic is usually quite nice outside of debates like Mario/Samus and Melee/Brawl, where the debates were centered on "common sense" instead of stats and past contest results. The nice thing about numbers is that no one is going to proclaim a match obvious based on the numbers unless it truly is obvious, whereas with "common sense," people will disagree and mock the other side as stupid for missing something they claim was patently obvious.
I think the overexaggeration/calling matches early thing is a bit of a joke now, or at least I hope it is. Then again, now that I think about it.....probably it's not for half the people posting in the topic.
You're right, sox. It's more a joke than anything. And yeah, stats can be harsh, but I think it was much worse years ago. Now, it's pretty chill and has morphed into more of a social, joke-heavy topic for people who love the contests. I don't think you're likely to get hostility or insults if you ask basic questions; I'm willing to say most guys in there are happy to help. We're also pretty much the only group on the board that tolerated Albion, and we did it for a good two years. That's pretty impressive patience if you ask me!

~ 20. Agree or Disagree ~ Creator: Chronic1000 List Appearances: 8 Total Points: 21
Write up written by Chronic1000
Agree or Disagree (AoD for short) was started in March of 2008 by Chronic1000. Almost immediately, the topic became a frequent source of debate among B8ers. Suffice to say, AoD is a love it or hate it type of project.
Normal topics for the project range from the relatively serious to the silly and honestly, stupid topics that should have never seen the light of day. At one point, Chronic even had a disclaimer that he'd delete most of the too stupid, silly, or dumb topics (though how often he actually enforced that rule is questionable, at best.) While the quality of nominations and topics are a frequent source of debate, there is no denying that it is one of the more popular projects on B8. It is not uncommon for there to be more than 50, 60, or even 100 votes for a single topic of discussion.
Despite the relative success of the project, Chronic stepped down from it in early 2011 and passed it on to Zachnorn, who now runs it.
Interesting fact: AoD has more list appearances than the next 8 projects.
Yeah, the stats topic is certainly not as unwelcoming to newbies as it used to be. I know that's a hard reputation for us to shake since a lot of people got turned off by the stats topic years ago and haven't come back. You still have the occasional mess (as you do with any topic), but overall, the stats topic is my favorite place to be during contest season. I think a lot of us are passionate people when it comes to contests and stuff, and so we argue stuff pretty fervently, so maybe that comes off as harsh, but I don't think most of us mean to be.
I can see why outsiders would not think highly of the stats topic, but I generally disagree with the reputation it has.

~ 19. The Board Odds Project (BOP) ~ Created by: Slowflake Currently owned by: charmander6000 List Appearances: 3 Total Points: 24
Write up by charmander6000
The Board Odds Project or BOP was started by slowflake near the beginning of the first games contest in 2004. It was designed in order to give a general idea on what games were considered the favourite to win their matches. While the Guru contest at the time was only a stats topic contest the BOP was opened to anyone that was willing to submit a serious bracket. Users could submit their choices in the topic itself or via e-mail if they would rather have secrecy.
The existence of the Board Odds Project was threatened when slowflake left the board over a dispute from the Nomination Rally Tournament for the 2006 contest and with the more popular Guru Contest opening up to the entire board. The project was kept alive by various stats topic users in 2006, helping in the sorting of brackets and was officially taken over by charmander6000 during the 2007 Character Battle whom has ran the project ever since.
Today the Board Odds Project is done entirely before the prediction period is over in which then the Guru Contest starts. The project still serves the same purpose from when it started and while the consensus rarely differs from the Guru Contest, it does give users a preview of the competition before brackets are locked and the change of confidence of entrants between the beginning and end of the prediction period.
Oh awesome, AoD made it. Honestly, I don't participate in many projects that aren't my own, but AoD was one of the huge exceptions until I took that over. Glad to see it on this list.
~ 18. gamefaqscontests.com/Poll Updater ~ Created by: creativename List Appearances: 4 Total Points: 25
Taken from the wiki:
sc2k5.com (also known by its new URL, gamefaqscontests.com) is a website created by creativename which features Contest results, X-Stats from every season (both raw and SFF-adjusted), and Match Updates, Match Pics, and detailed statistics from every poll. gfcontests is the #1 source for all things Contest stats-related.
Now from what I personally know about, this is an incredible site. creativename was one of the most influential users ever to grace this board, especially in a contest related aspect, which is essentially what this board was created for. This website project gave you everything you needed to know about the contests. A truly great piece of work, and should never be forgotten.
~~ 17. Save My Favourite Final Fantasy Character ~~ Created by: raytan7585 List Appearances: 5 Total Points: 25
For me this is easily the most popular Save My contest that is run on this board. It always gets a great amount of votes and attention across the community. I'm not entirely sure when this project was started as the wiki doesn't give me much info and raytan never replied to my message, but I know this has been running for a fair few years now, perhaps even the longest series of a save my contest still running on the board.
The contest is merely about what it sounds like its about. A simple save my contest featuring a bunch of Final Fantasy characters throughout all the games.
This contest hasn't been without controversy though, and excuse me if i have the wrong contest here, but IIRC this caused a bit of board drama when it looked like raytan was posting under amyvitality's account and could have potentially been an alt. Always got to love a bit of drama!

RS did something that no other board 8 rpg had done at the time. It actually was completed and released. The usual cycle is
Initial topic full of excitement, hype and ideas. ---> A demo about a week later ---> Lose interest.
So to complete the 9 hour game and have it released 3 months after it was announced must have surprised a lot of people. The interest certainly surprise me, it was kind of strange in the months afterwards seeing people making fanart for it or getting IMs from people you'd never heard of interested in making a remake. =S
The concept of the game was a clash of worlds between board 8, the real world and video game land. It resulted in a pretty muddled storyline for a while that eventually settled on travelling board 8 city to city in a classic save the world sort of plot. The game design was a real learning curve for me and I think it got a lot better as the game progressed.
The first stage was a jumbled mess hopping between storylines, it never really settled and some of the zones like the first forest was really bad. The initial ship design though was flawless. <__< The second part of the game was LOST inspired and involved searching an island of mystery. This tended to be the glitchiest part with so many interconnected maps and phasings. I think it worked "ok" but there were too many random occurrences going on that were never explained here. The last phase of the game when you got to board 8 I think was really well done, the plot settled down, the player had freedom to explore and it just flowed really well.
I started on Rising Valley after this but people weren't really digging the direction of it and I think I lot interest because of that. Technically it was so much better but probably messed around too much with large maps. Rising Crescent was the 3rd attempt and the one with serious potential, I think I did a great job on the demo and feedback was really good for this. It was technically good, glitch free and the kind of plot more alike to RS than RV which people liked. The problem? Not enough time in RL, bleh

~ 15. Holy Excalibur's Top 100 Lists ~ Created by: Holy Excalibur List Appearances: 6 Total Points: 25
Write up by Holy Excalibur
Board 8's Top 100 lists started back in 2005. It's hard to believe it's been that long. And a lot has happened since then. Many new games have been released. And many lists have come and gone. I've added more lists to the project, including Top 100 Series, and Top 100 Fictional Characters.
It's always fun to see what people like, and how their lists change. I can remember a time when Heroic Mario's favorite character was Mario. And Cloud. And Commander Shepard. And... whoever the main character of the latest game he was playing was. And then you have people like Sir Chris, who's favorite remain nearly the same for a long time. Of course with Dragon Quest V, you don't really need any other favorites.
Can i also just say, there were no votes for Board 8's Top 100 Users... I'm disappointed in you people! This is the ultimate mickey mouse of big user contests, the one that no-one wants to win!
