Mercs 1 Mega Man has become such a notable aspect of the game that this specific incarnation was nommed for an MPFC. (He lost in Round One.)

It's interesting that you say M3 has less "personality" than M1. I think that all of us (including me) have become somewhat jaded about the whole thing -- events that would have been exciting in M1 just aren't as exciting these days. We've had our share of wacky events in M3. A battle on a giant ship perched upon a tiny moving platform on a toxic lake, with a 24-foot-tall intelligent homing boulder chasing after one of the enemy. Marche crippling everyone on both teams and sticking them all in wheelchairs. Berserk 2x speed Amy Rose with gatling gun arms, stalking Denton. The absurdity and potential hilarity is all there. But now that the novelty has worn off, it doesn't feel as exciting any more.
Another issue that you touch upon: Does there have to be a trade-off between balance and fun? M1 was ridiculously imbalanced. In many ways, it was a chaotic free-for-all. Broken abilities were everywhere. Upgrades were ad hoc (like, you'd send in your merc for an upgrade, and the admins were all "hm, what should we give him?") Boss fights with big rewards were randomly thrown in to spice things up. In M3, by contrast, there's been a consistent effort to keep things structured and balanced. We have a carefully scripted power curve so that guys like Sephiroth are not released on day 1. We try not to release broken abilities (okay, this one's not always successful, but at least we don't have things like Mega Man or CATS randomly killing 90% of each team). We have pre-written upgrades. All of these changes, IMO, make for a much better strategy game. But do they also make it less fun? I dunno.
I agree with you that Mercs needs a very long rest before it comes back, if ever. Give it a year or so. Maybe then it will become exciting again. We can hope.
Also, did I mention that Mega Man was robbed? He was so robbed.

From: Ed Bellis | #146 He also argued that Dan Hibiki who had an ability to taunt an opposing Merc, after which they would prioritize taking Dan out could beat the Dahaka, an insanely powerful enemy with a water weakness, by taunting and then jumping into a nearby lake. (He won.)
Oh wow, I remember this.

I hope my writeup does it justice. I easily could have written five times as much, but I figured I'd stick to the highlights and try to keep it readable!

I would disagree that it's all there. It doesn't just not feel exciting; it's not as exciting, and people being jaded is a large part of why. Look at MPFC - a large part of the appeal at first was its freshness, and then in subsequent variations a lot of the fun came from potential scenarios. Now look at the most recent ones. We've been through this song and dance before. I guess it's a matter of semantics here - I'm saying that the mood is defined by the people, you seem to be saying that they exist independently.
I don't think we're really disagreeing here. Things aren't as exciting. That's indisputable. The question is why. I think it's mostly because people are tired, not so much because the situations are inherently less interesting.
The balance between... well, balance and fun is actually a big issue in Mercs 3's 'story.' From the get go it seemed like admins (and to a lesser extent players) were dividing themselves into one of the two camps, and some important decisions (like upgrade reveals) were decided based on those party lines.
Yeah. That was the big reason that Wang adamantly opposed revealing character upgrades and upgrade reqs. To sum up his position with an analogy: Let's say you know exactly what you're getting for Christmas. That definitely helps your planning (like, you won't buy a video game and then found that someone else bought it for you). But, at the same time, Christmas morning is a lot less exciting. The charm is gone, you know?
The counterargument is that Mercs is primarily a strategy game, and for something as vital as purchases, the ability to plan ahead is a lot more important than "charm." This is particularly true if (like me) you don't trust that character upgrades will all be balanced. Stuff can slip through the cracks. If you lay it all out on the table, let people see what they're buying, then they won't end up being screwed over by something they couldn't have known about in advance.
Different people want different things out of Mercs. Mana, for instance, was in favor of keeping character upgrades hidden. Charm means a lot to him. It was guys like HGR and me who were pushing to have upgrades fully revealed for the sake of strategy.
Anyway, I'm not sure where I'm going with this, so I guess I'll just stop.

1. Players can vote in other player's matches. This has always been allowed, but it didn't used to be a big deal because casual voters would show up to. Now they don't. We basically have players deciding the fates of other players in a game they're competing in, and anyone who thinks they have that kind of integrity has never been a Mercs player. 2. The Mercs they released were way, way, way too obscure. When people have entire teams composed of people that they haven't even played the games of, something is wrong. This also heavily contributed to the voters abandoning everything - why vote if you have to do research on a team? 3. Confusingly written descriptions and abilities. 4. Wang. 5. No schedule. Delays, delays, delays. 6. Couldn't see upgrades (there is no 'charm' in this, it was just dumb).
I feel honored to be mentioned multiple times, but we gotta remember everyone else, too! And for shame. Seriously. How do you have three or four giant walls of Mercs 1 lovin' without mentioning: - Redtooth's luckhax - The Shell
Let's start with Mercs 3 real quick. I definitely have not paid attention to it. In the early days, when General Bub was leading his troops to victory against King Dedede (I could've sworn Dedede and Ayla were a team... TR?); Red XIII & Ayla were my favorite team ever even though they got jack respect (even with Earthworm Jim); every single Cupil argument with Fina; WaLuLu... I was keeping track. When the random visual novel and obscure Japanese Pure Supports started popping up, I faded a bit. And then around Day 15 when I realized a lot of the arguments were so strict and my favorite, more versatile teams were getting taken out regularly by 'serious business' teams, I just went meh and moved on. Though somehow, without prompting, I often manage to end up reading the topics where the big drama's occuring. HK-47, HGR's mass carriers have arrived, that guy who fired everyone... but alas, I've missed all the great matches.
I did enjoy anything that took place on that bridge though. Think it was FFVI's with the three towers across it and there'd often be like a horde of zombies to wade through to the other side or Sniper couldn't shoot because there were towers in the way. Best narrows map I think, and I was a fan of Banon's winding mountain road.
And now, Mercs 1! Prepare for nostalgia: - HONK HONK HONK - STEAL LEAD STEAL, GREED LEAD GREED! - STEAL LEAD STEAL, TRAIN LEAD TRAIN, TAUNT LEAD TAUNT, PAWNCH LEAD PAWNCH (and then leading the DK Punch if it hits <3) - DANCE WATER DANCE! - What Wang said. - The Cave Factor / Falling to the Moon - Ganon's Last Stand - Dahaka vs. Id - Id vs. Laharl? - KA-WIIIIIIIIIZ TIME!!!! #1: How many H's are there in the Secret of Mana's story text until Randi falls off the waterfall? #2: What is this sentence? __e _i__ _i__ i_ _a_e o___ _o_ i_ i_ _ei__e_. #3: What is the name of the rare Escutcheon drop in Rise of Heroes (note: all rare item drops for every equipment carry the same name and stats except the Mmbahfather). #4: David, Ryu, and Ben are the first three characters you find of this group. What is this group and who are the rest of them? #5: Name all the items you receive from Mixing in FFX in alphabetical order. - Kleentis: "I totally want to do your quiz, Mana! BRING IT ON!" Mana: "Okay, here ya go DeathChicken!" - Redtooth's LuckHax & its drain on his health - Drak's Merc Journals - Lady Ashe, The First Forfeiter - *evil eyes Repus* - Sonic + Knuckles + Prince of Persia = not always insta-win somehow. I actually suspect Dp's team contributed to a lot of Sonic disrespect in later games just because we all tried to nerf the speedsters down in arguments so we'd later have a fighting chance =P - Alucard's Plan - Crono's mind****ing team. I dearly miss how hax the Runaway Five could be. Unless they stole Bahamut. - Bahamut in Dan's Dojo - Sora will get zero respect no matter how many times GANON shows off the Final Form videos - Number Nine Tickets - Fox has found a new mercenary whilst travelling the galaxy! (Dan Hibiki, 9GP) - Luca Blight & the Unworthy Maggots (a.k.a. as many 30/1's as Shake could get his hands on) - Kingdom Hearts bosses - Aeris must be last to die (IIRC) - Dan taunts Abe - Dan taunts Fortune - Snake and Link suck... until terrains - PIMP's votes - Metool vs. Mac - KP vs. Karma - Ed Bellis, best admin ever. - Tirofog's pictures - The hunt for the admin board =D =D =D - Potato - Bub because bubbles are wet
I'm having a tough remembering anything outstanding outside of drama at the moment, but Mercs 1? So good.
With regards to future incarnations, I miss the giant teams, as long as there weren't crazy amounts of obscure characters (for instance, if Chris' current M3 team was expanded to 25 characters with all of them equally unknown, then **** ever voting in that match). Not only could there be a lot more variation in abilities (KO, Possession, Seduction, Beatrix), but there were a lot more characters to use, a lot more arguments to come up, and more potential for a "holy crap, I forgot all about this character and how he could do that. What Wang said." rise of votes towards the end in an upset. Yeah, a team of five taking on a team of 22 sucked, but when they had just about equal numbers with some godly characters at the forefront, mid-tier characters who have stuck around since Day 20 and you know them by heart, and a bunch of fodder who, in some cases, could turn the tide in some fights (though usually just blown away by big nuke attack #1)? It can be exciting.
But 5-man teams.... yeah, I see their use. I see that there's still giant armies hanging about, but they just get whittled down to size for the actual matches. It's cool that way and I have objections to it except that all the fun characters get fired and we're nearly always left with powerful obscure characters and guns, IMO. Though I'm likely wrong since I stopped paying attention when those characters started popping up =P
Hey, I'm all serious business about mafia and I was in favor of banning Blade.
23. Random Spell Tournament: I always figured this was some random user contest; I think I clicked on a topic once and I was really confused and slowly backed out of the topic. Don't ask me to say anything vaguely interesting about this (not like you'd expect that from me anyway LMAO).
All you need to know is: - GANON won - Here was his winning argument in the final match:
-- another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high
From: Ed Bellis | #160 27. Prophet Challenge: Wait... so what's this? The PPC is percentage of voters who guess the match correct, so this is... I can't even think of another permutation/spin on the contest.
Margin of victory in terms of votes.
But what made the Prophet Challenge was MMX's writeups. Those things were hilarious. I still remember his writeup for Master Chief/Crash Bandicoot from 2004. That thing was amazing.
Too bad he wastes his rare appearances on the board making "Post here and I'll rank you" topics nowadays.

The person who gets closest gets a point. I think there was also a bonus if you ever got a perfect prediction, but I don't remember if anyone ever did.

"Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!"
Yeah, I remember Chris got remarkably close on one match, but I don't remember if anyone ever got it perfect. Too bad the results aren't saved anywhere!
And especially bad that the writeups aren't saved anywhere!

"The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..."
Prophet Challenge is pretty hard, but it's basically what TRE said. You have to have a general idea of how much the winning character is going to win by, percentage-wise, and how many votes you think the poll will get. Then you guess from there.
--
"I can set you free, mate." "My freedom was forfeit long ago!"
Oh, I did the Prophet Challenge for a little while and it was kinda fun. But yeah, definitely felt more a bit more random because you're predicting votals and percentage at the same time.
-- I made a living on time trial blowing myself off to cross the finish line at ludicrous speed. -transience
Putting an issue up for vote is a way to find what the consensus is. If there's going to be a vote anyways why not make it a formal AoD question as well.

Pokemon VGC2011 NW Regional - Top 8 Hopefully, we'll meet in Indianapolis...
There's got to be some kind of quality control on this thing though.
All nominations now require at least 5 different people to nominate something. So, if LMS makes a bad nomination and Ulti nominates it as well, there are still at least 3 people that need to nominate it. That does not even factor in denominations - if someone then denominates it, then 4 other people would need to nominate it in order to queue it. Now, this is still going into effect, as I did not track nominations until fairly recently, but now quality control stuff is going through.
Hey, we're in the process of trying to ban LMS from nominating anything ever again...!
I'm honestly not sure if I'll actually enforce this, though. Mainly because with the new rules, all that would happen is that crappy LMS nominations will just fill the 1-2 nomination levels, making it relatively harmless. Good ones will be nominated by others, I'm sure. With the computer program and database I made, not all of the nominations are even shown when I post them.
I also find it a little weird that rule changes have to be done through AoD topics and not just through consensus.
What TRE said. It's kind of tradition that I have picked up from Chronic. I'm thinking of pushing them to the front of the queue if they are placed at 5 nominations. I mean, you could think of it almost like Robert's Rules of Order, except instead of needing only a second, we need a third, fourth, and fifth, and then vote to see who is in favor and opposed!

Quick side note. Board 8 Wiki, although coming 3rd by a considerable margin to the top 2, actually had the most list appearances.

The Board 8 Wiki is a unique project on Board 8, in that it is an offsite project, and hundreds of people have contributed to it. It is a website all about Board 8, GameFAQs contests, and related information, and it has 230+ registered accounts on it with many unregistered users also contributing. Information about almost anything related to the board can be contributed to it: users, fads, history, projects, anything related to GameFAQs contests, etc. Its basically Wikipedia, but for Board 8. As such, there are a large variety of articles, with categories and links galore. In that sense, it is arguably the largest Board 8 project in terms of contributors, with almost 4,000 articles created since the Board 8 Wikis creation in January 2006.
Zachnorn created the Board 8 Wiki when he saw a topic from SA2Tails discussing the possibility of having a wiki for the board, to post stuff like high scores in games, AIM usernames, etc. SA2Tails was thinking of it being a resource for Board 8 to share just small things like that, and few people expected it to be anything more than a few pages of interesting information. The Board 8 Wiki was originally created through EditThis.Info and Zachnorn didnt change the defaults much when he posted it on the board. It took off from there. People initially made articles on fads and such, and then started to make pages about themselves. It would soon move to ElWiki.com (which no longer exists) a few weeks after its initial creation, and it even had a .com name at one point. The Board 8 Wiki was the first of the social board wikis, with PotD, RI, and CE having wikis similar to the Board 8 Wiki. However, the Board 8 Wiki has been the most successful, especially after the collapse of ElWiki. The Board 8 Wiki would move to Wikia, its current home.
Today, the Board 8 Wiki is a place hosting all types of information, and information scattered among many websites for Board 8ers to view is now a lot more centralized. People on Board 8 have a place to easily write about themselves for others to see, including top lists. Many projects use the Board 8 Wiki, usually to store results, writings, or whatever, and so it is an important part of many projects on Board 8. The main parts of the Board 8 Wiki still exist, however: information about the contests, and information about the Board 8 community. The Board 8 Wiki continues to evolve in ways that nobody would have expected, and it continues to grow. Its one of the longer-running projects on the board, lasting 5 years so far. As long as there are contributors, the Board 8 Wiki will continue to run.
There have been several administrators with the Board 8 Wiki. The current administrators, in the order of them earning admin rights, are Zachnorn, SA2Tails, Ngamer64, UltimaterializerX, Xcarvengerx, Th3l3fty. Former administrators are Repus_Yortsed and X_Dante_X. This does not count the Wikia admins. If you want to see a list of everyone who has an account at the Board 8 Wiki, you can find that information here: http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Special:ListUsers .

The Guru Contest started back in the Spring of 2004 as a fun/silly little competition between a few of us in the Stats topic. The idea was: we'd all type up our bracket for the original Games Contest, and whoever scored the most points would get their name mentioned in everyone else's sig for a couple weeks. Only 31 people entered the Guru that first season, but over the years we moved signups from Stats to the main board, added a stipulation that everyone has to nom a character of the winner's choice, moved the scoreboard from Excel to a customized website, added detailed stats on what result was predicted for each match... as as a result the Guru's become bigger and better every year. Over 250 B8ers sent in brackets for the GotD battle, making it the most popular Contest in B8 history!
It's an honor to have the Guru mentioned amongst the other great projects in B8 history, but I'd like to say that it wouldn't be possible without the help of a number of users who assist me with getting the brackets entered each year, plus others who have created scripts to tell when people will be eliminated and to make posting brackets easier. So thanks, everyone, and here's looking forward to another fun Guru season during the upcoming All Fictional Character Battle!

(Part 1)
Solarshadow started the Oracle Challenge back in 2003 based on a simple idea: instead of just picking the winners, why don't we "test your prediction abilities down to the hundredth of a percent!" The contest was an instant success, and returned in 2004 bigger and better for the Best Game Ever contest.
In my view, 2004 was when the Oracle really sealed its place as a board 8 institution. The games contest was exciting and brought in lots of new people (including me), and it also featured the legendary race for first between Bananaquest and King Morgoth. The two of them started a fun rivalry, competing to change their predictions literally at the last second - I remember one day when BQ posted his change at 10:59:59, but got one-uped by Morgoth's 11:00:00 post, which was the exact deadline. Bananaquest lead for 38 days, but Morgoth ultimately defeated him, in part due to a bold prediction on (what else) Starcraft vs Wind Waker.
Summer 2004 was big as well, but in a different way. Morgoth took over running the contest when solarshadow disappeared, showing that the Oracle was bigger than just one host. Lots of people considered Character Battle III a pretty boring and predictable contest. But the Oracle kept things interesting anyway - a trend that would later continue, thanks to CJayC's other solid gold hits like The Villain Contest and The Female Bracket. Of course I'm biased, because the back and forth battle for the lead between myself, kawaiifan, and King Morgoth (dubbed "the k crew" at the time) made me love SC2004.
At its peak, the Oracle got over 100 predictions a day, and was quite simply the best board contest there was. We've had our share of storylines and drama (who could forget Xuxon's back to back championships, pikaness's blatant attempt at cheating when he was in first place, or cyko's failed attempt to give away the Character Battle V championship with a prediction change after the deadline?) But I always thought two things set the Oracle apart from the other board contests. The big one was solarshadow's original idea. Unlike some of the other great board contests like VGMC, the Oracle was built around the thing that brought us here in the first place, the character battles. And unlike stuff like the PPC and spread betting, the Oracle was about the most interesting and straightforward question - what percent will each character get?
The other thing that I think set the Oracle apart was the super-dedicated hosts. No one was a bigger fan of the Oracle than King Morgoth and myself, which I think showed through in the way we ran the contest during its heyday. Regular updates, a website with all the past results, King Morgoth's old "top 10 contenders" lists - we spent hours on IM practically every day talking about our picks and about the contest. I made myself write those damn updates every night because I knew getting some recognition when you finally got that top 5 pick made people care about the contest... and I knew that because I knew how it felt when I finally got a top 5 myself and got to brag about it in the writeup. Of course, these days there are other well-run contests, but I remember the board being rife with contests that would start, only to have the host disappear after two weeks. The Oracle wasn't one of those - it's been around for every Gamefaqs contest since 2003, even while outlasting multiple hosts.
So, thanks to everyone who has made the Oracle what it is! The enthusiasm of the participants was what made it worth doing. Solarshadow, King Morgoth, Kleenex, Carvey, Ngamer, creativename, kawaiifan, Xuxon, Camden, Moltar, GrapefruitKing, DSR, Luster, and anyone else who ever hyped up the Oracle or made a topic about it or just predicted a match, you rock!
So there we go! Pretty solid list if I do say so myself. Shame we didn't get more votes in, but I think the results would have been fairly similar.

Too bad I couldn't vote for both. I love 'em both. But I knew NRT was more popular overall, and so sacrifices had to be made for the greater good! I feel like the NCAA contest idea was one of the more ambitious project ideas Board 8's seen in terms of scale (because most contests we see on the board are simple single/double elimination tournaments as opposed to a full season and postseason), and yet it's still a simple concept since it's basically a sports format applied to characters/games. Plus, it's different in that you get to see the same entrants participate week after week, so you get to keep up with stats, performances, and try to gauge strength from week to week.
Still can't believe both of those projects are 6+ years old though!
Fun list. You know, I'm caught between really wanting to run the Random Spell Tournament again ASAP, and knowing it's probably too early for it. I don't want to burn people out on it but it's so tempting... V_V...
Anyways, the first users I remember from coming here included Moltar. I think I came during a contest and read the crew's writeups which was pretty fun. My skills in the contest have risen dramatically since I started coming here :P
