Do you have the same political beliefs as your family?

Just been thinking about something I heard once. I was asked as a kid what political opinions a classmate was giving because they wanted insight on how their parents were politically thinking...got me reflecting on this topic.

my parents don't really have any political beliefs, they're just sort of amorphous blobs on any sort of policy except for a select few out of self-interest like my mom's NIMBYism or a few long cemented things like being pro-choice

for most things thoughs, put it on a tv screen and they'll believe it because they don't really have any foundational knowledge of their own

My parents are serious about politics and in fact pretty radical by US standards. I still find this stance agreeable and at worst think they're overly-optimistic about the responsiveness of the government, and have taken the party line on nuclear power and GMOs, for instance, when there's more nuance there.

Pretty similar to my dad. A lot of my moms instinctual views on issues are actually somewhat conservative, but due to a hatred of Trump and watching entirely too much MSNBC shes been polarized into being a stereotypical resist lib.

Immediate family yes, extended family no.

My parents were already more liberal than their parents/siblings and my sister and I have made them more so.

Nope

My mum will never vote Labour because of the winter of discontent in the late 70s, even though it's been almost 50 fucking years and the tories have had at least five worse prime ministers in that time. Dad's inscrutable. Prefers a quiet life. I think he's fairly changeable on who he votes for, but doesn't tell me or mum because he doesn't have an argumentative bone in his body. Probably leans conservative. I'm a bit more left than my sister but not by a lot I'd say, so we're similar.

They are at least all further left than US Republicans and Farage, and mostly acknowledge that Johnson was an incompetent manchild, so there's at least some common ground there. Extended family I've never really talked to about it though I know one of my aunts votes, or has voted, for Labour recently.

Mostly. But it might be because my mom moved to the US when she was like 10, and so her values tend to align differently than most Americans, and we picked that up. We're a very progressive family.

My mom has drifted closer to my beliefs over the past decade to a decade-and-a-half but my dad lmfao. Not sure about my brother but I think we're similar.

My dad is quite progressive and politically active, and I line up fairly well with his beliefs. My mom is less politically minded but also fairly progressive.

My parents have always been solidly liberal but in the last few years they've gone hard left. Like probably more so than 99% of America. So yes pretty much the same beliefs.

Extended family, I think they're more like centrists? It's hard to tell with catholics. They usually vote Democrat but I think went for Trump in 2016, who knows why.

Mostly yes. My mum is diehard Labour. My dad does not usually vote as a matter of principle but is left-wing. My sister and I are the same pretty much. All very anti-brexit. Even my extended family tend to all be Labour, with like two exceptions. The family is from a working class area in the north so its very tribal in a lot of ways, so you dont really see the same kind of generational divide that you would usually see. Most people in my generation and later would be very much to the left of the earlier generations, see XIII in this very topic. I think geography changed that in my case.

On the other hand since I now live in another country I dont really know what my family makes of our political issues! So I will only speak of UK politics here.

My parents and sister are very liberal, so we are pretty close politically yeah. My uncle is all who is left on my mom's side, and I have a feeling that he's pretty liberal as well.

My dad's side is the opposite. They live in rural areas and go hunting and are susceptible to misinformation such as that the democrats are trying to take their guns away and believed that Trump "told it like it is." Other than my oldest uncle who is chill and liberal, none of them got vaccinated against COVID I believe (I haven't seen them since 2019 as a result), and most spent weeks or even months in the hospital with COVID.

My brother is pretty much identical to me ideologically, both very left. Some of my cousins are more generally left/liberal. My parents are generally center-right with this strange tendency to get on the same page as me on a number of issues when we actually sit down and talk about them, only for them to always revert right back to the old beliefs by the next day and always ultimately vote for Republicans.

My parents are staunch republicans. They are pretty mind rotted now since all the disinformation/fox propaganda age.

All my siblings lean left or are liberal, I am also very liberal.

Yeah, around the same. They barely have politics other than some things that may come on the news. And just influence from a favorite president in the case of my mom (JFK). But they don't really fall under liberal vs conservative stuff. And then there's my brother who is practically alt-right and I, as only a right leaner, hate it.

oh entire family

sister is semi-engaged somewhere between liberal & lefty, mostly centered on foreign policy, humanities, helping refugees but can have more traditional liberal beliefs on the workplace from her experiences as a manager

brother is completely drowning in the far-right extremist online sphere, spends his entire day obsessively worked-up over wokeness, minorities, vaccines, and starts his day listening to every shitlord podcast pushing that trash

so sister's generally decent, mom is centrist conservative liberal, dad's policy is to basically complain about what anyone is doing and assert himself as the sole intelligent being without really having any concrete beliefs, brother is every single bit of far-right shitstain you can think of
