Wii Sports is higher profile and not available past a Wii U

also Goldeneye is probably higher profile than MGS4 and is on way less modern hardware

Sure but MGS4 is still bigger than all those

MGS4 is special because PS3 emulation is no where near perfect (it was mostly being worked on for Persona 4) and there's no really high profile PS3/360 game that isn't on modern platforms.

Though not high profile, both Tales of Xilia games and Graces F are stuck on PS3 only and every other title can either be emulated well or on modern system legally.

Damn, I didn't really realize that it's still exclusive to one system (I'd have naturally assumed a 360 port at least). Additionally, PS3 games aren't compatible with any newer Sony systems - some of the other higher profile games mentioned here like Wii Sports and Pokemon RBY can at least be legally played on other machines.

I'd agree, but Goldeneye came from the era where multiplats and re-releases were far less common, and there was all the licensing limbo between Nintendo/Rare/Microsoft. It still meets the criteria of Anagram's original question, but it's just... far less surprising to me than MGS4.

Assassin's Creed is one of numerous titles from the Xbox/360 era that are backwards compatible (as well as still available to purchase) with XB1/Series S/X

Sony is working on having a legit emulation solution for PS3 games on PS5 instead of streaming

Don't forget AC has the benefit of being a multi-console game which would obviously make accumulating copies sold easier. MGS4's 6-million just on PS3 alone thus might be more impressive than AC which had the benefit of two consoles + PC.

People aren't exactly clamoring to play Assassin's Creed 1 either way.

I am, I just got into the series and want to go back but what's the point if I have to start from 2!

The only reason I have AC1 was because the PS3 version of Revelations came with a digital code for AC1. I wasnt going to buy that game on its own

If its on PC or backwards compatible then that counts as modern hardware so no AC1. Similarly I wondered about MGS1 but thats on GOG. The actual answer is certainly Wii Sports followed by Pokmon RBY, though those did both get ports.

If the question is never got brought forward then it would be Goldeneye, but MGS4s not too far behind.

Goldeneye is 100% bigger than MGS4 in every way. It sold more, it had the bigger cultural impact and effect on the industry, and Bond is a bigger deal than MGS. Wasnt Goldeneye the highest selling N64 game not counting Super Mario 64? You can make an argument for MGS1, but definitely not any of the sequels.

Adding to this, I would wager that more people in total played Goldeneye than any other N64 game due to its extremely popular multiplayer. By gaming standards it was a cultural phenomenon.

I guess I wasn't really looking at it from a sales perspective I was just thinking what game would I rather play today and goldeneye does not play well anymore while MGS4 still does.

Granted I'm sure the goldeneye remaster will have improved controls anyway

EDIT: Looking at the list of bestselling games on each list, I might actually have to give that honor to Mario Kart 64. Still definitely above MGS4 though.

A good number of old Gran Turismo games arent on modern hardware if we are going by sales

Pokemon RBY too if we are done with the 3DS being modern hardware (unless you think the Lets Go games count, then you just slot in GSC)

GE barely beat MGS1 on this weird one-off contest. This wasn't like a real bracket-contest we're used to (I'm taking MGS1 to beat GE both then and now anyway)...but the main reason I'm linking this here was because out of the site's top ten games in that format, GE was the big surprise to us. At that time, the takeaway was that this upset spoke to the enormity of how much bigger GE was off of GameFAQs than we realized on here. I imagine old man Snake closing his story was more insular within gamer culture like ours than my friends at the time who did hands-only and Golden Gun battles in Archives.

Like...between DOOM and Halo, GE was the FPS that carried that weight in-between for console gamers (credit to Half-Life on PC in the meanwhile though). GE was the first game I ever saw the cool kids at my school play. Away from the game itself, I once saw a one-man show called "No Oddjob" -- it was of course a cool show

Though rare, I still hear occasional references to GE. MGS4 was huge too but it wasn't the same.

In my childhood, Goldeneye was THE biggest game from when it came out until Pokemon, and continued to be a solid #2 behind Pokemon for another year or two. It was colossally huge.

I just want to brag that I called GoldenEye being 7th in that top 10 contest

Let's ignore that I missed 3/10 (had GTA San Andreas, Final Fantasy X and Resident Evil 4)
