Its not Shakespeare, but its a pretty good use of tragic irony for a love story.

When you put it that way, FF X really does sound like a stock standard jRPG

X is a better story experience, which some people value the most in an RPG, and X-2 is a better gameplay experience, with its expansive gameplay systems and all the stuff you can do in it. It's a matter of taste in the end.

I like X well enough, especially the gameplay, but X-2 is a funner game that's inherently more playable due to all the shit you can do in it and the fact that it's built for New Game +. It has a weak story though - and while X is anime as fuck and there have been and will be better video game stories, there's no argument in my mind that could convince me that X-2 has a better story than X. X is a perfect standalone, and the sequel opened it up to pointless expansion with those dogshit audio dramas. Life goes on after X's story ends, and that's cool, but with Vegnagun it feels more like a Monster of the Week situation compared to destroying a monument to ignorance and misery that has plagued the human race for a thousand years.

Sin is actually a pretty unique villain/antagonist for a JRPG.

Seymour is a bit more textbook, but Sin essentially being a vehicle for the living dream of a fallen civilization, piloted by the remains of the person who summoned that dream into reality because he was devastated by the loss of his people isn't something you see every day. >_>

Yeah, I've never understood people who argue the gameplay is better. I think you've got to be obsessed with a class system and also dressing up the main characters to feel that way, because it isn't an improvement at all
