We've had ten contests, and despite some of the fanbase's best efforts we've had ten different winners. Clearly you guys as a community must see some inherent value in change. That's why instead of the usual post-contest Q&A I wanted to propose something entirely new. SMDC at its core will remain unchanged: trading will still be allowed, alliances encouraged, etc, so the contest you know and love will still be intact. What I'm proposing is a complete overhaul of what is and what is not allowed in, and a potential expansion of the roster to accommodate the inclusion of non-traditional "Disney" characters. Please don't grab your torches and pitchforks or your noisemakers and pompoms just yet. I am not changing anything myself. SMDC is about community. We even have a community rule that has led to a lifetime ban for disruptive posters like slycooper69, and led to me, the host, being suspended for 3 rounds because no one should be above the law. That is why I am not giving myself the power to make these potential changes. I am giving that power to you- all of you. All of us as a community should come to a consensus as to what qualifies as "Disney enough" for SMDC, as it's only a matter of time before Disney merges with the entire world. If you think we should only include Star Wars characters who had cinematic debuts after Disney bought Lucasfilms like Rey and Poe Dameron, but not Darth Vader and Jar Jar Binks I want to hear it. If you think we should retroactively allow Wolverine and Neytiri Te Tskaha Mo'at'ite into SMDC XI because Disney owns Fox properties now I want to hear it. If Rocket Raccoon, Roger Rabbit, Rizzo the Rat, and Reed Richards are "not mah Disney" I want to hear it (and yes I'm aware one of these has already been in a contest). I want to hear arguments both for and against the inclusion and expansion of characters because if you don't speak now, come SMDC XI you will forever hold your peace. Again, I am not deciding anything. I am merely proposing it. It's not me you need to convince; it's the remainder of the community that you're appealing to, and it's on you all to decide how we proceed from here. A character that went on to become one of our ten champions was not allowed into the first two contests. When MI allowed Kingdom Hearts characters to enter the fray the immediate fear was that they would over-perform and push out the classic Disney characters. Well it's been three contests now, and you can see what kind of a splash they made. The fact is even if characters you don't view as Disney enough make it in, if the rest of the community is of a like mind those characters won't do well anyway, and if any traditional Disney characters are ousted it's going to be the ones no one cares about getting back in anyway. KH is a pretty contained group of characters, while Star Wars is a massive universe (if you allow everything created that predates Disney's acquisition of it) and Marvel is as well, though obviously on a smaller scale. The thing about Disney's live action films is that they are branded as Disney. It's what you think of as the company behind them. But Marvel? You still think of Marvel, not Disney. The big issue is that when you say the names of these big Marvel characters, I don't feel the majority of people say "Oh yeah, he's my favorite Disney character". I believe like half the top 10 in stats there are new characters who havent had to go through the longevity of a lot of contests. Just a few good rounds to kick things off, and boom, your ahead of everyone in stats who've had to endure many more contests of success to get there. I'm not just saying this because Nick has a great chance of debuting number 1 next season, I've had this complaint even during last season's smffc. I think 4 or maybe even 5 contests should be the inclusion line. As for Simba, to be honest I only mildly like him, so his defeat here isnt that disappointing. TLK is not my favorite movie, and Rafiki is probably my favorite character in it. The fact that Simba got to the finals though with limited dedicated support says a lot though about his overall likeability. As far as expanding the roster....there's something to be said about not allowing characters in who debuted pre-acquisition, speaking specifically to marvel and star wars. I love the idea of only including characters who debuted post-disney acquisition. That should have a more Kingdom Hearts-like effect on the contest rather than an overpowering effect on it if you let all Marvel and Star Wars characters in. --- Don't mind me.
