Annihilation is good but also out there and not for everyone

Iron Man was certainly less popular than other main Marvel characters at the time, but he was still an Avenger. And sure, at the time The Avengers was no Justice League, but it was still a headlining series for Marvel. People knew who Iron Man was.

A character like Vixen is still C-List, you can't argue Iron Man was below Vixen, even when she was getting pushed hard for a couple years there.

Might be my favorite movie. I have the book sitting next to me on my desk right now but I still haven't read it.

The general public absolutely had no clue who Iron Man was. If anything you guys are the ones doing revisionist history lol. Only comics readers, and maybe some young people had heard the name before or something, but he was absolutely a nobody as far as general audiences go.

I think a D-List Character is actually extremely viable just because of their complete lack of relevance being part of the bit. Polka Dot Man, Peacemaker, Kiteman, these characters get popular because they're D-List trash, and they can become B and A-List because of it.

The absolute worst someone can be is C-List. Not enough popularity, but no irrelevancy irony factor to boost off of. Characters people know but nobody actually cares about.

Idk I just picked a letter C, D, E whatever, point is he was a complete nobody.

My guy people knew who Iron Man was. He had a Saturday morning cartoon show in a popular block with merch. Even if they don't know anything about him, they could probably have looked at a picture and went "Iron Man, I think?". That's not D-List. That's not Cat Man pre-Gail Simone.

Just by the nature of having a Cartoon show he had at bare minimum, absolute MINIMUM the same general public penetration as, say....probably The Thundercats?

I couldn't name 20 superheroes before the MCU became a thing, but Iron Man wouldn't have been one of them

Saying Iron Man was a complete nobody before the MCU is factually wrong - he was a B-lister at worst and that's just compared to legitimate cultural icons like Spider-Man and Batman that transcended the medium. Fact of the matter is that almost all comic book characters were "nobodies" based on what your standard appears to be.

I do agree that nobody knew who Iron Man was, but that doesn't make him a "nobody" when it comes to Marvel. Pre-MCU, the average person would struggle to name even 5 Marvel superheroes.

They just picked the wrong characters lately.

Just make a Big Wheel movie and fill it with wheel puns and they'll be rolling in cash.

Listen, Iron Man wasn't (and still maybe isn't) on the Mt. Rushmore of Marvel Superheroes but give me a fucking break with him being D-List. That line of thought just means that everyone who isn't Spider-man, The Hulk, and Captain America is D-List.

Any combination of five X-Men who were all in movies.

This constant refrain that "nobody could name, you know, the stars of comics that sold millions of copies over the years" and had animated shows and films prior to the MCU is really asinine.

you can make a movie a success with a group of "nobody" characters if the writing, acting, directing etc are on point.

And the casting, I think about how Sydney Sweeney is like, one of the hottest actresses right now (literally and figuratively) and she gets cast as.... a frumpy bookworm? Not that her being played by a different actress or portrayed in the movie differently would've made it any better but yeah, talk about casting against type...

I'm not sure most people who aren't comics fans could name the members of the Fantastic Four (at least back then). Spider-Man plus 4 X-Men seems more likely, or even Hulk and/or Captain America.

These characters were on lunchboxes in schools across the country. Tens of thousands of parents saw them every single day while zipping up bologna sandwiches and Yoo-hoos.

The barometer for the time period (at least in 2004) would be New Avengers #1, which threw away all of the dreck and rebooted with Spider-Man and Wolverine alongside Captain America and Iron Man. Those were probably the four biggest solo title movers at that point outside of Hulk (and Daredevil, who had really been more of a critical darling than a commercial success). They were the merchandise movers at the time, and not comics. I mean regular merchandise - t-shirts, etc.

I was thinking Spider-man, Wolverine, The Hulk, Captain America, and maybe some other X-Men character as those movies were decently popular in the early 2000s.

People forget that comic books were and still are a relatively niche interest.

There was an ad back during Flash: Rebirth that read, "Barry Allen is back, and it's the worst thing that could have happened to him."

Except someone arranged the typography so that if you cut off the last line it just read, "Barry Allen is back, and it's the worst thing that could have happened" which I always loved and agreed with.

Even when I was in my Johns obsession phase (and I don't think Unlike his stuff at that time less now, I think he's just gotten way worse), I was still like....this is a mistake.

I LIKED Flash Rebirth and still think it was a mistake.

I don't think anyone could argue Iron Man wasn't in the top 100 superheroes before the Iron Man movie. That's absurd.

Not unless you stretch the definition of superhero. Goku, Popeye, Bugs Bunny...

They should have just made more amazing spider-man movies with Andrew Garfield. He was in the Holland one. Its already tied to the MCU. They have the concept of a multiverse. They can both have a spider-man. It was such a no brainer.

Iron Man was in MvC2, and I would have to say he was more recognizable at the time than a Spiral or Silver Samurai.

I was never a fan of superheroes as a kid and I don't remember ever being confused on who Iron Man is

Iron Man has always been solid B Tier. Plenty of non comic people knew who he was. My mom knew who he was for crissakes

Marvel movies boosted him to A tier from B tier not to B tier from C or lower.

I was sad when I found out Shuma-Gorath was a nobody.

Wasn't War Machine in MvC but not Iron Man for some reason

Iron Man was in Marvel Super Heroes, at some point he got palette swapped to War Machine. I think in MvC2 they were both in it tho

"War Machine's inclusion in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes was due to Iron Man being off-limits as he was being featured in Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal, a video game published by Acclaim Entertainment."

So Iron Man was going to be one of the just 7 Marvel fighters in the first MvC but they couldn't use him because someone else had the rights and were making a game with Iron Man in it.
