so I was having the "so-bad-it's-good" conversation with people in the real world and one of the examples I used was Face/Off

and I was told that "no, that's just a good movie"

and I said that cannot possibly be true

and then I was fucking floored

Sony and Marvel's latest entry in their shared Spider-Man cinematic universe has no better comparison than that of a rickety wooden coaster you'd find at a family-owned amusement park: brutal on the body and precariously constructed.

After the weekend numbers I think I'll have had my fill of this

Madame Web's downward spiral at the box office continues, this time on a global level.

The latest numbers are in for Sony's latest Marvel movie and, after earning only $5.6 million in North American theaters this weekend, its global cume has risen to a mere $87.3 million.

It's taken the movie two weekends, and a few extra days on top, to surpass what 2022's Morbius made in a single weekend (despite rotten reviews, it debuted at the worldwide box office with $83.9 million).

Madame Web is thought to have cost upwards of $100 million to produce; the number doesn't include marketing costs and it's widely believed the movie would need to surpass $200 million to break even.

A China release is on the horizon but we don't anticipate the Middle Kingdom being a game-changer for Cassie Webb's origin story.

"Were not going to see another Madame Web movie for another decade-plus," one industry insider recently said.

"It failed. Sony tried to make a movie that was a different type of superhero movie."

As a result, it's thought Sony's plans to expand this franchise with sequels and spin-offs have been scrapped.

Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3 are fast approaching, but should those face the same critical and commercial struggles, we have to believe the studio will finally go back to the drawing board with the SUMC and start over.

People may not be heading to theaters to watch Madame Web, but the movie continues to generate discussion on social media.

For example, some eagle-eyed fans have noticed that there's a shot featuring Dakota Johnson's Cassie Webb with the Boom Mic still in the shot.

oh here we go

A travesty of corporate cynicism. Its desperation to ride Spider-Mans coattails is pathetic, but its convoluted, coincidence-laden nonsense is duller than youd imagine: its not even so bad its fun.

Imagine if you will, a thriller without thrills. A sisterhood movie without any chemistry between the vulnerable girls. A comic book movie without laughs. A superhero movie without heroes.

I underestimated the shititude of this thing as we're back down to 12%

This is a true point, but as far as superhero media goes, I think the even bigger issue is that everyone - Marvel included - keeps trying to push characters that most people aren't actually interested in. They saw Guardians of the Galaxy make bank despite being a list of D-stringers, then thought they could do the same. Unfortunately, the superhero mania has died down, and most directors aren't James Gunn.

Greenlighting movies based on Morbius and Madame Webb are the most egregious examples of this trend. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I'm sure that's true on some level, but it felt like in late 2018 and early 2019 it felt like there was a stretch of time where ANY comic book movie could do well if it didn't run into sufficient competition regardless of how well it was received. There's a reason Aquaman is the highest-grossing DC Comics movie even above movies people talk about more like The Dark Knight and Joker, to say nothing of Venom and Captain Marvel. And all three of the movies in question (meaning Venom, Aquaman, and Captain Marvel) were met with their fair share of skepticism before release to, even if in at least one case said skepticism was dumb.

Also am I the only one tired of Sony getting hated on? People acted like they were responsible for briefly yanking Spider-Man out of the MCU when that was actually Disney's handiwork. And it's disheartening that when people do hate on Disney they hate on it for being supposedly socially progressive even though Disney reeks of playing catchup in that department, but that's another story.

With Madame Web in particular, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Sony higher-ups saw Wonder Woman and especially Captain Marvel being big hits and decided to just make a movie about whatever Spider-Man adjacent character they could use that Marvel Studios had no plans for. Too bad it turns out EVERY studio seems to have had that idea. It's definitely admirable that there have been more female-led comic book movies this decade than there had been PERIOD beforehand, but women by themselves do not sell. This is like the negaverse of the time where Hollywood executives used to justify not having female-led comic book movies by pointing to the poor performances of Catwoman and Elektra. I say this since apparently some men did express interest in seeing Madame Web just because there are so many beautiful women, so I would not be surprised if this is where the creative process began and ended at least at the executive level.

Yeah Venom gets a slight pass for being universally iconic, all they needed was to not write a web-level script and it was going to pull in half a billion.

But when you start at the bottom of the barrel character-wise, your highest hopes are making your budget back.

At least Sony doesn't sink a fortune into these Spider-Man adjacent movies unlike SOME studios. Then again like I said I also do genuinely appreciate how these "Sony Spider-Man Universe" movies tell largely standalone stories (key word being largely, I know they're trying to tie it into the MCU in clumsy ways), and I also appreciated the second Venom movie embracing the whacky humor as a way to distinguish it from the MCU (where the humor is more of the snarky kind) even if the script still left much to be desired.

There's not really a way to be sure whether a movie will be good until it's actually made. Also, movie quality and profit aren't that strongly correlated. There are loads of bad movies that make money and good movies that don't.

I think the Superhero hype is dying down, but while Good Movies is obviously, you know....the main answer, I really think the only thing to make me actually care anymore is to scrap the Cinematic Universe stuff.

The Batman was the best Superhero movie in years because it was super good, but ALSO because it was completely it's own movie.

I don't mind at all if a movie has tons of characters from the universe in it, hell there's gonna be like 40 in Superman Legacy or some shit, but I don't need all of those character to have their own movie, and I don't want to have to watch 3 other movies and a couple TV shows to care.

I wanna live in the world where two unrelated movies, one about a 25 year old Spiderman and another about a 60 year old Spiderman can come out a year apart with different actors and people are fine with it as long as they're both good.

I disagree completely as does history. The MCU literally started with a practically d-list character but because it was a good movie, everyone learned to like the character, and now Iron Man is one of the most recognized superheroes of all time.
