I'm planning to watch this tomorrow with my girlfriend. Hoping that I can at least laugh at how bad it is although all these reviews are convincing me otherwise, and I actually paid to watch Morbius and regretted it 5 mins into the movie.

I think what "saved" the movie for me is that I went into the top corner of the mostly empty theater and wrote notes every time something stupid happened (so constantly)

there were some scenes where I legit wanted to talk out due to a combination of frustration and boredem. the notes absolutely saved me

I have no idea how people are sitting through the whole thing. I DARTED out of the theater as soon as the credits started. i didn't want another second of this movie

Wait, I just realized that Morbius has a similar premise to The Fly and Madame Web to The Dead Zone. What David Cronenberg movie is going to be dumbed down next to fit into Sony's Spider-Man Universe? Videodrome? Scanners?

On this topic, I also remembered that Josh Trank explicitly cited The Fly as an influence on his ill-fated Fantastic Four movie. So obviously comic book movies should never look to The Fly as inspiration.

This is going to be the 6th entry for sure. Expect Miraculous to give powers by becoming radioactively entwined with their blood instead of a magic chant.

This movie was so bad. Sososo bad. Morbius is actually better how is that possible. Had a whole filled row of kids 2 rows down from us. They actually clapped when it was finished. How they simultaneously ruined Ezekiel, Madame Web, and anything associated with spiders ever is actually beyond any comprehension.

Madame Web breaks a 22-year-old Sony Spider-Man box office record during its 6-day opening. Since the release of 2002's Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire, the Sony Spider-Man universe (SSU) has enjoyed a number of lucrative openings, including a $260.1 million domestic opening weekend gross for Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Despite being part of the SSU, Madame Web did not generate the same level of anticipation and excitement that usually exists for movies related to the popular superhero.
According to Variety, Madame Web has grossed $25.8 million domestically across its 6-day opening, and $17.6 million during the typical 3-day opening weekend. Madame Web's box office is now officially has the worst opening in the history of the SSU, even below the critically panned Morbius' 3-day opening gross of $39 million.

A bit overblown and overstated. It's not a good movie, but reviews are glorifying how bad it is a little bit. It's more of a shrug your shoulders affair I felt, perhaps I am difficult to offend in the realm of cinema. There have been much, much worse films that never get the spotlight on them though.

This implies this is part of some sort of giant marketing push by a giant multimedia corporation to get people to buy tickets and keep the movie at the top of public mindshare for weeks longer than it deserves. Which would be ridiculous.

Again, I have not seen this yet because I'm not confusing Sony by giving them money for this...

But I love me some C and D horror movies. I believe you do too. For me, there 100% is a wraparound effect where some movies can become so-bad-they're-good for one reason or another.

Everything I've read so far seems to say that this thing only inspires apathy, which (to me) is the worst of all worlds. It's bad in all the non-fun ways and just cripplingly nothing in all the others. And yeah this one definitely has a bigger spotlight on it because it is Marvel adjacent and Sony wants these to become a thing. It's Sony's fetch.

I just enjoy me some good schadenfreude at a dumb corpo's expense.

I almost admire the sheer lack of effort on display in the acting, storytelling, and set pieces. To say that Johnson in particular phoned this performance in would be an insult to Alexander Graham Bell.

Genny and I both have AMC membership because we watch a lot of movies, so checking this out didn't cost anything extra. But yeah, I watched nearly 120 horror films last year alone (just ones released last year too). I would say that for me though it is difficult to make a "so bad it's good" movie. The large majority of films that I'd say are bad are simply bad, and others are in this tier like Morbius and Web, just eh. There were like 3 times I laughed because something was actually bad enough to inspire it, but it's a 2 hour film so that's not much. Sony tried the laughably bad approach to Morbius because of the Morbin' Time meme and the general response to the movie, but I found Morbius to just be a pretty forgettable 90s vampire movie, not even "bad" per se. It's probably a better movie than Madame Web pretty easily though. This one was almost total apathy with nothing to take away.

But again, I deem bad as like actually torturing me. I know some people (especially critics) praised Skinamarink for example last year but when I think of bad, I think of that. Pure unadulterated torture for like 90 minutes.

That's a fair outlook.

But boring/apathetic/forgettable are way more damning than "bad" for me when it comes to movies. I can find weird masochistic enjoyment out of bad. Forgettable makes me angry I wasted time on things. It's a weird graph.

The way I understand it, Morbius was getting memed on because it was announced in 2020 and then delayed 2 years while Sony kept hyping it. Otherwise I don't get it.

As for whether a movie is so bad it's good, I'd put Batman & Robin in a borderline case since the actual plot is excruciatingly boring while the movie fails in tons of other ways (phony sets, bad costumes, dialogue full of one-liners and winks to the camera, awkward fight scenes) that get amusing because of how much they pile up. I think the first time I saw Armageddon I found it to be hilariously bad, but when I re-watched it I just found it mind-numbingly boring because of the sensory overload. Um hey Van Helsing has some cool fight scenes, but I'd call it a guilty pleasure at best and not really so bad it's good.

I unironically like The Rock, but it's far from flawless. Anyway back to Spider-Man...oh the Bad Boys movies are also Sony, there's your connection!

If it matters, no I don't think Armageddon is a bad movie because Roger Ebert told me to. I wasn't even aware what he thought of the movie when I first saw Armageddon. Also fwiw his former co-host Gene Siskel actually recommended it. Roger gave the movie 1 star out of 4 when I'd give it 1.5-2 stars.
