I mean, I feel like it's going to go for some post-modern commentary on the series' staples or something.

Maybe Mario and Luigi split up because Luigi hates feeling like a second banana. Or the Princess rebels and escapes from Bowser on her own and Mario tries to find new purpose.

Or maybe an origin story that shows Mario and Bowser facing off for the first time. But in the end the lesson will be about being yourself. I dunno.

Bowser kidnaps Peach. Mario heads off to save her again. Just after the final blow is struck, suddenly a sword crashes down out of the sky.

I feel like they'll stick to the "Bowser kidnapping Peach" premise just because it's what most people think what Mario is about. Maybe they'll have a twist in the plot though, but if so, it won't be in the trailer.

It's Illumination they're going to do the safest family friendly plot they can with some pop culture jokes and toilet humor.

Either the Toads or Goombas are going to be minion proxies (maybe both?)

It's an Illumination movie so there won't be one. It will be constructed out of low hanging fruit and dated pop culture references. Mario will say "Well THAT just happened" at some point. There will be a joke where people get mad at Mario for stepping in a Goomba.

I can't fathom how anyone would believe that this movie is going to succeed, or even attempt, to do anything even mildly creative

In a surprise twist, the movie is actually just a re-release of Super Mario Bros. (1993), which is 100% guaranteed to be better than anything Illumination could make.

Was originally thinking Toads, but Goombas fit there too.

Then they can have a spin-off called Toads VS Goombas and make the most tower defense-money to be made since the days of Plants VS Zombies.

as much as I want the SMRPG idea, it's gonna be Mario finding an envelope with a little seal on it

I'm almost certain Wario won't be in this movie, given that they gave us the voice actor for freaking Spike of all people but not Wario, he feels like a sequel idea

I unironically think it's just going to be verbatim from the SMBSS theme song: The Mario Brothers are plumbers in an AU Brooklyn. They find a warp zone while on the job and end up in the Mushroom Kingdom just as the Princess gets captured. Wacky adventures ensue until the final confrontation with the villain of the movie, Bowser, though they try and make it look like they're going to do a subversion where Donkey Kong is the real villain. There is no sequel hook in the end credits, but they do a cover of "Do The Mario".

I think Mario's gonna start the movie in the Mushroom Kingdom, I don't think they'll start him off as a plumber from Brooklyn

I just want this to be competent but knowing Illumination it will be as cookie cutter as possible. Heres hoping Miyamoto nitpicked the shit out of this like he did for the 5 frames Bowser was in Wreck-It Ralph

It already can't follow the typical Mario story structure since they have these high powered voice actors behind every character. There's gonna be 50 pages of Chris Pratt Mario dialogue. How the hell are they gonna fill that space?

Peach will be kidnapped, but this will only be to kick things off. Peach will do some girl power stuff (the recurring joke is she's a princess in a pink dress being badass) and the Mario crew will end up joining forces with Bowser to take down a real Big Bad who will bring forth the end of the world if they aren't stopped.

Yeah they're probably going to do a post credits Wario thing like Shadow in Sonic 2 the movie.

But they might hint at Wario earlier with Mario and Luigi making nods to him when they have the inevitable toilet humor jokes (Mario's a plumber that's as low hanging fruit as possible for Illumination)

It's gonna be Luigi's adventure from TTYD but with Mario doing it instead.

Post credits scene will be Rabbids to fill the minion role in the sequel.

If I were in charge, I'd have an alternate reality Mushroom Kingdom where Bowser is good and Mario is evil. and I'd have the regular Mushroom Kingdom.

Good Bowser would banish evil Mario using a warp pipe that switches places with good Mario.

Then we have a teamup of Evil Luigi, Good Mario and Good Bowser trying to fix everything.

In the end both realities are set straight, with both pairs of Mario Bros being the good guys and the Bowsers being the bad guys. In the regular Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser commits to peace but crosses his fingers.

Post credits Wario and Waluigi are teased.

What plot? It's just going be some fart jokes, some pop culture references, another fart joke, a very dated meme reference, a gratuitous musical scene, another fart joke, a slapstick gag that's actually slightly amusing, followed by a few more pop culture references. Then they just repeat this pattern until the runtime is long enough for people to feel like it's an actual movie.

You know, if freaking Foreman Spike isa character there might be weight to this. The movie might start off with Mario as a construction worker in the "real" world and then travel to the Mushroom Kingdom
