i'm looking forward to it. no real strong feelings about LOTR's world even though i adore the jackson trilogy. i don't think it'll be anything special, but hoping it'll be fun.

Brandon Sanderson recently announced a delay on the fifth Stormlight Archive book because "this is the year Hollywood came calling" and I'm very, very wary of what we might get.

I didn't see anything in there to indicate it'll be bad.

But it'll be bad. That's just kind of how tv is

I'm happy when trailers don't spoil things, but I would have liked to understand who the main character was and what the basic premise would be

This is what you get when you have followed the Nostalgia Critic for a long time since he likes making jabs at Goyer. Doesn't help his last two screenwriting credits were Batman v. Superman and Terminator: Dark Fate, and I feel like he's the individual most to blame for the latter instead of James Cameron or Tim Miller.

In all honesty I'm not entirely sure. The TV Tropes page lists lots of non-political reasons fans have gotten exacerbated and meanwhile the two most recent "massively downvoted" trailers I can think of are The Emoji Movie and the first Sonic movie and the controversies in both cases weren't political.

Please don't stereotype everyone against this as bigots.

dude has had a Mistborn screenplay written for years and has been actively trying to get a movie deal for longer, and he objected to most of the mistakes the wot show made but was ignored and is very aware of how vindicated he is. There's no chance he's gonna blow this opportunity

That's not a high bar though.

I would guess that a decent chunk of this trailer's dislikes are coming from fantasy fans who know what happened to the WoT adaptation and don't trust amazon. Like even if you don't care about WoT, you know they already fucked up a different major fantasy property.

Yeah it only started to wane when I found out how often he misrepresented films to prove his point, not so much because of #ChangetheChannel. The one example that comes to mind soonest is him acting like every dinosaur in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a dangerous carnivore (when Chris Pratt tricks a pachycephalosaur into breaking a brick wall separating their prison cells the Critic just quipped "he's dead" as if the dinosaur was immediately going to kill Chris Pratt. Although come to think of it the way I described the scene sounds so ridiculous).

That also makes me want to bring up how he acted like the reveal that the Indominus Rex is part raptor in Jurassic World should have been obvious even though the I. Rex (wow) looks about as much like any other carnivorous dinosaur. Also making it clear Doug has no idea how genetics work.

what a silly thing to say. Maybe all the dislikes are because this looks NOTHING like lord of the rings? compare this trash to the Peter Jackson LoTr trilogy and you will see why so many are unhappy. It's also not even TRYING to be faithful to J. R. R. Tolkien's vision

To be fair whenever a trailer is hugely downvoted there was blatantly a huge crowd against the work in question already. I looked into it and there seem to be FAR more than just politicized controversies regarding this series, and even then it probably comes down to just the idea of someone trying to put their own spin on Middle-Earth after the massively successful Peter Jackson trilogy. The first one anyway at least.

Having said that, I know for sure there is politicized backlash against Rings of Power already from people who insist that Middle-Earth is meant to be a stand-in for Anglo-Saxon England or something and that it therefore makes no sense to cast people of color...even though it's blatantly obvious this is a completely new Middle-Earth mythos. Which is a problem unto itself, sure, but why act like the inclusion of people of color is really that big a deal in that case?

its gonna be interesting to compare the two shows. Though I kinda wish all the money went to hungrier authors with newer stories who are willing to collaborate on the script and direction extensively

Indeed, I thought it was fine other the first couple episodes which were a bit of a mess. Also, my sister, who has read the books, liked it better on re-watch knowing a lot of stuff was just going to be way different.

Wheel of Time was decently regarded until the final episode, which most people hated. I doubt it'll go beyond a second season. Amazon's in large part responsible for how poorly it turned out - it was originally written for 10 episodes, which Amazon cut down to 8.

yeah the final episode was where it went way off course, I had been enjoying it for what it was up to that point

I dunno, this could be okay but, yeah, the WoT adaptation doesn't make me confident.

looks incredibly unfocused but not completely terrible. I'll probably start watching it and see where things go from there. chances of seeing fingolfin, glorfindel, or even gildor are probably close to absolute zero.

this is a bit misleading. he only co-wrote the story for the dark knight. the nolan brothers wrote the screenplay.

i know we always like to dunk on LMS but "goyer sucks" isn't much of a hot take, really. he's a hit-or-miss screenwriter at best.
