pokemon that late in the game that wouldnt be in anyone's team tend to be either legendaries or pseudo-legends (who are in the clear) or be like Misdreavus and become accessible early in another gen. So you can't just think about a Pokemon who is late game, they have to be late game in EVERY appearance.

I mean, gen 1 is just wildly, absurdly more popular than other gens. It had an entire several years in the late 90's where that was all there was and people only had 150 to choose from, not nearing 1000. Even if you're gonna talk about Go, gen 1's more established there, too. If there is going to be a Pokemon that nobody carries a torch for, it's just not going to be from gen 1.

I find it difficult to believe anyone can give half a damn about most mid-evolutions, which are neither cute-nor-cool for the most part (Gen 1 things, especially Ivysaur notwithstanding, nor Pikachu since baby forms don't retroactively make the mascot less known.)

That said, this is coming from a Banette/Stunfisk fan, soooo.

Obscure stuff from gen 4 on is a weirder bag. There's a pretty significantly reduced audience for it and a large % of that audience already likes Pikachu or Charizard or whatever. I'm not saying that there's definitely nobody that counts this stuff as their favorites but I don't find it that unlikely that there is at least one Pokemon that not a single human being is vouching for. I don't know which Pokemon that would be, but there's a couple hundred candidates.

ok so there are 20 million pokemon players, probably more if you can include Go
there's no way every Pokemon doesnt have at least one just based on pure math, there's only about 900 of them.

This is not quite as true outside of Gamefaqs as on it. Plenty of Pokemon outside of Gen 1 score very well on fanbase polls- Greninja alone has won multiple. Considering each new game comes with a bevy of new players, there's more than enough that someone is going to get specially attached to every one by pure math.

Would "the sheer number of people familiar with Pokemon mathematically means each Pokemon must have a favorite" apply to forms, as well? Like, what is the likelihood that there is at least one person whose favorite Pokemon is specifically Unown Y?

Oh wait, this is what you were responding to me about earlier? I see where the miscommunication came from now, sorry. I was saying "the logic that makes someone pick a gen 1 favorite could be applied to any gen", but you thought I was saying "the hypothetical Pokemon which nobody calls their favorite might possibly be from gen 1", which wasn't the point that I was getting at.

Right, I agree with your logic that the same reasons someone would name Kakuna their favorite also apply to someone like Burmy. It's just that because gen 1 is such an institution onto its own, the potential pool of flamebearers for any given gen 1 Pokemon is way larger just due to nostalgia alone. There's always people who are new to Pokemon with any given gen, of course, but people are just gonna have gen 1 covered as far as each Pokemon there being vouched for. Gen 5 I think is the sketchiest - there are so many Pokemon, so many of which are three-stage lines.

Yeah, I wasn't even trying to say that no one would claim a particular gen 1 Pokemon.

This is definitively not true. There are movies that have been seen by incredibly small handfuls of people, not to mention lost films from the 1910s and 1920s that don't even have anyone alive that has seen them anymore.

While it isn't my favourite Pokemon, I'm partial to Unown G since it somehow got on my team when I first played Pokemon Silver. Maybe someone else caught Unown Y instead and ended up really liking it.

Yeah, actually, I'll grant this. Not everyone's obsessively thought about every Pokemon and come to a conclusion on what their #1 is after years of thinking about it, some people just kinda pick a fave for some reason and go with it. I think in my head I was approaching this more from a standpoint of durability, like "does every Pokemon have someone who would consider this Pokemon their favorite without changing their mind for a long period of time", but that's adding extra qualifiers onto the question. Every Pokemon has surely had someone call it their favorite at some point in time.

heh when I was a kid I'm pretty sure the most recent Pokemon I caught or evolved was always my favorite so yeah probably

i could easily see someone going "whoa my worm changed into a cocoon, this cocoon is my favorite pokemon," especially if they haven't seen the other 7 cocoon pokemon

I think that there's a certain threshold of obscurity where people start questioning whether a Pokemon is really anyone's favorite, and Plusle is likely below that threshold. And yet I have empirical evidence showing that this obscure Pokemon really does have a fan. I was just emphasizing the fact that I wasn't speaking hypothetically.

Plusle isn't a popular Pokemon by any means, but Gamefreak has tried to promote it here and there; IIRC you're given a free one in Pokemon Colosseum before you have access to purifying shadow Pokemon. It's also sort of a mascot for double battles. You can get a lot more obscure than Plusle.

Plusle/Minun are cute, I can totally see them being someone's favorite.

I think the hardest sell is someone like Duosion, who I like but they're just strictly inferior to Reuniclus. I can't see someone having Duosion as their #1.

It's a similar situation with Gothita getting no mentions in that one reddit poll. Personally I hate that whole line, but I get that some people like them; but if you're into that aesthetic you'd probably like the evolved forms more.

As others have said, yes. The number of people familiar with pokemon is way too big compared to how small a number of pokemon there actually are, and people can get attached for so many reasons. Much as it baffles me that someone could love, say, Swadloon, I'm sure they're out there. Middle stages will be the *least* popular, sure, but there'll be at least one person out there for each of them. Several people, actually.

B8 should rank all the pokemon and see who the least popular one is overall.

Its not my favorite but I like Wormadam. The pink steel type version helped in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (explorers of sky), and she had a pretty good move pool. I'm sure other people like weird ones like that.

My favorite is Jigglypuff. I actually used Plusle (or was it Minun) in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon as well for a bit.

I also used to have Seaking as one of my favorites because some guide book trashed it and I felt bad for it and I used it and it did okay. I have a soft spot for things like that.

Edit: I apparently submitted a list on one of the ranking lists? Gloom, Gothita and Alolan Persian I actually like too. Gothita is so cute.

Ha I actually thought about this a few days ago while being stuck on traffic
Like I can see someone having Deoxys as their favorite. But what about Deoxys defense specifically?
The reason I thought about that is because my favorite is Alolan Vulpix
And I don't give a shit about regular Vulpix
And yes I know they are 99% the samd Pokemon with different colors, but colors can make all thr difference in my eyes

The question that people asked was framed in a way as such not JUST to find how many different Pokemon were everyone's favorites, and not just to share those results publicly, but on top of that, to virtue signal how much they like every Pokemon as a protest against SwSh removing Pokemon from the game. So people are highly incentivized to provide unique answers. The question isn't if people fudged the numbers and provided the most obscure Pokemon that is among their favorites, the question is how many.

I think you're thinking a bit too hard

If you have a Pokemon that's a strange pick to have as a favorite that you really like you're more likely to like that Pokemon more than you should if you're being "objective." The fact that that's "your" Pokemon gives you a fondness for it

Like I'm one of these people in a way. My favorite Pokemon include Wigglytuff, Raichu, Magnezone, Hitmonlee, Meowth, Butterfree, Staryu, Mewtwo, Ho-oh, and Caterpie. That'd probably be my top 10 in no particular order, but I haven't thought about it too hard.

But if you ask me which one is my favorite I'm picking Caterpie every time. This is partially because I worked really hard to make my Caterpie party viable to the point of Gamesharking him moves as a kid. I put that extra effort in because he was "my" Pokemon.

Now to further complicate this people who are picking weird Pokemon are generally picking them in multiples. As a point of reference Caterpie has 28 people picking him as their favorite. While you might have some people who aren't as sure as I am he's their favorite picking him for list's sake, are you saying all 28 aren't sure? And this is only a 5000 response list!
