Saw a post on a Pokemon group on Facebook. It asked for our favorite Pokemon and someone answered Cramorant, which is kinda crazy to me.

Considering the number of Pokemon and people who play Pokemon, I supposed it is quite likely. But it makes me wonder, which Pokemon has the least amount of people calling it their favorite.

I'm pretty sure this settles it. If we've definitively narrowed out all but these four, I'd say that there's gotta be someone somewhere out there that has each of these as their favorite.

The fact that there is a "Cascoon/Silcoon of legendary Pokemon" makes it noteworthy. And anything that can be considered noteworthy in somebody's mind can be somebody's favorite. We just need 1 person in the whole world, maybe the Reddit poll isn't a big enough sample but I believe that they're out there for every Pokemon.

It's not that complicated. Do I think every Pokemon is one of at least someone's faves? Yeah. Do I think every Pokemon is someone's absolute ride-or-die fave Pokemon forever? I find it unlikely. The question that people asked was framed in a way as such not JUST to find how many different Pokemon were everyone's favorites, and not just to share those results publicly, but on top of that, to virtue signal how much they like every Pokemon as a protest against SwSh removing Pokemon from the game. So people are highly incentivized to provide unique answers. The question isn't if people fudged the numbers and provided the most obscure Pokemon that is among their favorites, the question is how many.

Pokemon GO alone has over a billion downloads, doesn't it? You really don't think that out of a billion-plus fans, you could find one for every Pokemon?

i definitely think it's probable that for the reddit poll, some people were memeing/not being entirely truthful about their absolute #1 favorite

BUT similarly to how i think the 4 Pokemon that got 0 votes in that would have received votes if the sample size was larger, I absolutely believe that every Pokemon has someone who has it as their favorite. like for the purposes of this question, we're not even looking for a significant amount, we're looking for literally ONE person.

like their unique gameplay experiences and other experiences (e.g. Nuzlockes) could have factored into a really unpopular Pokemon genuinely being one person's favorite

Plusle doesnt even seem like a weird choice for favorite. Its a thing that looks very similar to the thing that is the mascot of the entire series, of course someone is going to like it.

I find it harder to imagine the dire life situation that could lead someone to choose Silcoon.

Like my favorite is probably still Bulbasaur in part because he was the first Pokmon I ever had. If the first Pokmon a kid experienced was Silcoon that kid would immediately think Pokmon was garbage and move on with their life. Its nothing.

I think that there's a certain threshold of obscurity where people start questioning whether a Pokemon is really anyone's favorite, and Plusle is likely below that threshold. And yet I have empirical evidence showing that this obscure Pokemon really does have a fan. I was just emphasizing the fact that I wasn't speaking hypothetically.

Well, like kateee said, there's so many crazy ways to play Pokemon these days.

Maybe someone did a crazy difficult Randomizer Nuzlocke where Silcoon was a beast that completely carried them through the game, and due to the hilarity of that situation it's become the Pokemon they have the fondest memories of.

Is that any different than (in 1999) a kid being given a Metapod TCG card as their first card by a friend, and mentally keeping it in high regards from that point forward (at least for a few months until gradually evolving their tastes due to continued exposure to the series)? Because that happened to me. I don't think it matters whether it was Metapod or Silcoon or Pikachu or Plusle, there's a reason for being attached to a Pokemon.

But you can accept that someone's favorite could be an utterly irredeemable garbage gen 1 Pokemon? Take whatever logic led to that Pokemon becoming their favorite, and apply it to a younger kid playing a later generation in the same circumstances. There's no reason why it couldn't happen; we're not only talking about the 30 year old demographic here.

Alright I want to break this down. Here are some Reasons Why A Pokemon Might Be Somebody's Favorite:
Design (Cool, Badass, Cute, Unique, Weird, Interesting, etc)
Strong
Meme (really stupid, notably useless, notably un-notable, gimmicky, etc)
Based on something somebody likes
Nostalgia/Carried in Gameplay
Childhood capriciousness

So, basically, we're looking for a Pokemon that has a boring design that's either based on an animal with many better Pokemon examples or is based on an object/concept that nobody cares about, isn't very useful in the game, is unremarkable, is gained late enough in any game (probably postgame) that it wouldn't have been a useful member of anybody's team, is missing any kind of factor a kid would glomp on to (probably largely a combination of the pokemon being late-game and having no role in the anime), and, most importantly, is a dark horse for least beloved Pokemon to avoid a Finneon situation. Of course, there's TCG and randomizer nonsense, but I think we can ignore these and be ok. Does any Pokemon fit this bill, to start with?

Yeah there is. They're vastly more well known and more established, even the 'obscure' ones. I don't have any doubts that you'll find a fair number of people that count any given gen 1 Pokemon as their favorite. Even, like, Gloom, or Shellder, or whatever.

Obscure stuff from gen 4 on is a weirder bag. There's a pretty significantly reduced audience for it and a large % of that audience already likes Pikachu or Charizard or whatever. I'm not saying that there's definitely nobody that counts this stuff as their favorites but I don't find it that unlikely that there is at least one Pokemon that not a single human being is vouching for. I don't know which Pokemon that would be, but there's a couple hundred candidates.

does anyone remember when Bidoof was still considered a newer Pokemon

it got clowned on so much wherever i looked because people thought it looked stupid or whatever. now i could easily believe a bunch of people have it as their #1 fav. and honestly i thought it looked dumb as fuck back then too but looking up pics of it now, it's actually kind of cute. and those COMICS

around when Ermine first said his favorite was Zigzagoon i vaguely recall the general reaction on this very board was something like "that's so random" and "why" and "who would have that as their favorite Pokemon"

like obviously Bidoof and Zigzagoon aren't on the same level as Binacle or whatever but people form attachments based on their own experiences/tastes and the sheer number of people and variables involved lead me to believe that there is definitely an experience that made every Pokemon someone's favorite

This doesn't make sense though, especially when you're saying "already". You think it's okay if someone played Pokemon Red when they were 8 and Kakuka is their favorite Pokemon ever, so by the time they play 4 more games they don't like any other Pokemon as much as they like Kakuka. But what if someone was 8 years old when they first played Pokemon Diamond and Burmy is their favorite Pokemon. They're not being "influenced" by the older games, they don't have to "already" like something else when they're discovering new Pokemon for the first time.

The first Pokemon game I owned for myself was G/S. I only ever played Red/Blue at my friends' or through emulation. Because of that, for the longest time, my favorite Pokemon was Pineco. Fucking Pineco. I couldn't explain it. Something about a pinecone with eyes appealed to me.

Years later, my little cousin's favorite Pokemon was Ferroseed, and it stuck out to me because it was like "holy shit that's just New Pineco." His reasoning? "It looks like a football."

That was it.

I fully believe people could come up with just about any stupid reason for why something is their favorite.

Yeah, actually, I'll grant this. Not everyone's obsessively thought about every Pokemon and come to a conclusion on what their #1 is after years of thinking about it, some people just kinda pick a fave for some reason and go with it. I think in my head I was approaching this more from a standpoint of durability, like "does every Pokemon have someone who would consider this Pokemon their favorite without changing their mind for a long period of time", but that's adding extra qualifiers onto the question. Every Pokemon has surely had someone call it their favorite at some point in time.
