Dumb as hell decision. The counsel on both sides agreed to enter Herrera-Beutler's (GOP Rep who corroborated the McCarthy/Trump call details) written statement on the matter into evidence as witness testimony but that that would be it and they've proceeded to closing arguments.

Hearing that feelers were sent out to people near Trump/Pence and no one was willing to cooperate and there was some concern about calling unwilling witnesses but this is such a stupid decision.

Or not. Dems are a joke for not going through with the witnesses after they won the vote to do so. The R position that there is no jurisdiction is consistent with not calling witnesses - if the Senate lacks jurisdiction there is no reason to have any further proceedings. The Dem position is just throwing in the towel. So we are going to have 2 impeachment trials, both without witnesses and both ending with Trump being acquitted.

If everyone really is entrenched there isn't anything to gain over dragging the trial out another week other than possibly creating war weariness among people who aren't bloodlusting for trump.

Unless you thought witnesses would actually change anything (hard sell), I don't think skipping witnesses is a bad thing.

They could have deposed witnesses in committee with the actual trial itself in recess until they were done, conducting normal business in the meantime.

I agree it wouldn't have changed the end result, but I think it's important to get all this in the record to make it as damning as possible for the cowards and traitors who are going to vote to acquit.

It IS a waste of time, and when I said that. UshiromiyaEva said I was just mad that Trump might actually face consequences, lol.

Is this not an approved time to criticize the Dems? They went this far, closing in on a month since inauguration with no checks...and for what?

Not calling witnesses because it would be a 'waste of time' is a bad argument. Everyone knows that Trump was always going to be acquitted - by that logic you could call the entire proceedings a waste of time, if you look at it through the narrow-minded scope of the only purpose of the proceedings being to convict Trump. It's about getting everything on the record, holding people accountable (as much as our broken system can), and, of course, optics. If there are witnesses to be called, you call them, because doing anything else looks weak to your base and sets a horrible precedent.

It's important to have the trial in public to show the people the evidence. This is going to look like, the Democrats didn't call any witnesses because they had no evidence, or they knew the witness testimony was going to hurt their case. Whether or not that is the case, that is what it is going to look like. Trump is going to loudly proclaim he was completely and totally exonerated, and that the whole thing was a witch hunt.

As of now, I can only expect that when the next right-wing coup attempt happens, the Republican Party as a whole will make no attempt to obstruct it, even offer support should it seem likely to succeed. Biden has perhaps just four years to try to make sure that the United States military will not abandon their oaths to support and defend the Constitution as easily as the Republicans have.

Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Sasse, and Toomey voted guilty joining all 50 Dems.

Aside from the usual suspects of Collins, Murokwski, and Romney, what's the status on the other 4? Are they all retiring or in seats that aren't up for re-election in or 6 years?

Burr (NC) - Would be up in 2022, but he claimed back during his 2016 election he would not seek re-election. So, in theory, retiring.
Cassidy (LA) - He was just re-elected in 2020.
Sasse (NE) - Re-elected in 2020, but he has been vocally blaming Trump for this all along which is why I had named him as one of the 4 most likely to vote guilty.
Toomey (PA) - Retiring. Announced in October he would not seek re-election.

Yeah, that's possible.

We know Georgia is investigating the phone call to the Secretary of State. Likewise, NY has been investigating his taxes all along and have been stalled by his being President. There's no particular reason the DOJ couldn't investigate him too, hell, McConnell just now all but said they should ("He hasn't gotten away with anything... yet!" was his literal quote around him discussing how he was still liable for his actions in criminal and civil court) and Trump's Defense Lawyers made similar arguments during the trial.

That said, I would not be hopeful of DOJ entering into this fray. It's the states you'd want to look to and NY I think has the best chance.

Well, I mean, across all Presidential impeachments in American history, only 8 times has a Senator cast a guilty vote against a President of their own party. And all 8 were against Trump. (Romney last time, and the 7 today)

This was literally the most bipartisan guilty vote in history.

~~~
lmfao Pelosi just crashed the House impeachment managers press conference with almost literally, "I wasn't planning on being at this conference, but then I heard that fucking turtle open his mouth." (seriously, sans profanity, she basically opened with that.) Correctly called out the absolute cowardice, lies, and bullshit behind McConnell's hand-wringing about how "The House managers proved their case but we can't convict a former President, if only the trial had been during his term" with pointing out how they were ready to go and it was McConnell himself who kept the Senate from returning to session until the inauguration. She was just spitting fire at all the R senators who voted to acquit too, it was pretty great.
I fully anticipate being mad at them in like two months time but at least for now I think this is all better than I expected honestly.
