Senate votes 56-44 that it is constitutional to hold an impeachment trial of someone who is no longer in office.

6 Rs joined: Romney, Murkowski, Sasse, Collins, Toomey, and Cassidy. Cassidy is a newcomer to the 55-45 vote they held on this very same question two weeks ago when Rand Paul objected it was unconstitutional. McConnell voted it was unconstitutional after his last act as Majority Leader was to keep from reconvening the Senate to hold the trial while he was still in office.

The actual trial will proceed starting tomorrow.

When the House impeachment managers showed their video of Trump inciting the insurrection - y'know the very charge leveled against him - Paul, Scott, Cotton, and Rubio all just looked down at their papers (Paul doodling on his) and not the video. And those are just the ones the reporter noticed.

Oh come on, this is just theater. Every person in congress already had seen that video, or was aware of it, or wouldn't have cared to begin with and had made up their minds ahead of time about this. Whether or not they are paying attention to the motions they are pointlessly going through is completely not worth note.

Its not just a matter of students getting a better or worse education. Not all students educational needs are the same. The point of magnet schools is to achieve a critical mass of students necessary to justify specialized courses that would benefit those students. E.g., at a typical high school you are not going to get enough students interested in and capable of taking a class in differential equations or quantum physics, but maybe you would have had a couple of people at each of these schools. If instead these students attend one school you can actually offer these classes without having the kids have to dual enroll at the local university.

Im not saying that representation at these schools is not a problem, but you can address that without throwing out the entire purpose of the school.

Except mixing ability improves both overall attainment and engagement in learning, which has been seen in Finland, Japan, the UK and more. The future of education is mixed ability classes, its the best for everyone. A well-funded, well-staffed school is not going to struggle because it has students if mixed attainment. What will happen is that those lower and middle attainment students will do much better. Of course you do need to improve the schools overall.

If that defeats the purpose of those schools, good! Education should be about bringing everyone up, not just a privileged few.

I mean, mostly same, but in the long run I would have benefitted more from actually treating my shit? More challenging coursework demanded my attention but didn't fix my core habits - the strategy of coasting through still worked, it was just causing me to expend more mental energy when pressure built up too much. And during college and adult working life this tends to backfire spectacularly.

Anyways uh, my point here is that this isn't really on the education system to solve, but it's the shitty lifehack it uses to get around what is actually a mental health treatment issue. The problem is this solution is results oriented over everything, it's really only focused on the end result of productivity. I internalized so many bad habits just because I was getting good grades and therefore must have been doing well, right? (nope)

I agree the lotteries are better. If a child is not being sufficiently challenged by the current school system, you cannot use merit to distinguish who gets it, as often you will see cases like tony described where the students who are not being challenged actually underachieve. A good sign a student is being unfulfilled with their current situation is... trying to go to a magnet school that might make things better.

Senate is in recess for dinner and will be back in like 20 minutes but among the many videos they also showed was Schumer apparently nearly ran into the rioters (video showed Schumer and his Capitol Poice detail heading down a hallway. They leave the frame for a few seconds before they reappear running back the way they came, with two police closing the doors behind them and bodily barricading them.)
