Eh. My first thought was, "Hmm, that might be interesting" but once I started trying to run scenarios I think it'd be kinda boring. Putting aside that analytics can probably "solve" it for the most part, with the current OT rules does the second team ever not take offense regardless of where the first team puts the ball?

Say they put the ball on the far 20? I mean, that's the old touchback spot, I imagine every team takes offense there. The 10? Probably! I mean, maybe if you put the ball on the 1 and make them go 99 yards but with how the game favors offense and TD wins on first possession I just don't know if it'd be all that interesting.

What they should do is have one coin toss for the right to pick where to start and then another coin toss to determine who gets to pick offense or defense. Would teams just play it safe and pick the 20 every time or would they take a chance and hope they get the ball in good field position?

God everyone makes OT in football so needlessly complicated. You know what would probably be easiest? Just continue the game from where the fourth quarter ended. Other team gets a chance to respond regardless of whether a TD is scored or not, if other team responds then sudden death after that. Boom. Done.

just continue the game for another 7 minutes and whoever has the most points wins, if not it's a tie

The Cam signing has to be insurance in case literally every trade and draft option falls through, because he's a disaster of a QB at this point.

Yeah it's 100% a "we need a qb on this roster who at least has potential". Now, is that potential warranted - no. But if you play the season a hundred times there's at least one or two times where Cam is above average!

The defense will theoretically be improved even without adding anyone since they had half a dozen starters opt out last year, but the offense will continue to be awful unless they pick up some skill position guys outside of RB.

The possibilities are endless there with all the washed up WRs getting cut. Knowing Bill he'll sign a scrappy white Edelman replacement and call it a day.

You can't really sign free agents if you don't have a QB. Cam is essentially securing our plan B (plan A I guess is Jimmy G?) so we can actually sign a TE/WR.

I'm not sure how closely you follow the Pats but the only ones that opted out were Hightower/Chung on the defensive side that would have had an impact, and Chung's replacement was draft

Cannon's replacement also got drafted, so really they only missed having Hightower and now the defense is a year older with Gilmore likely getting traded or holding out

You're right it was half a dozen starter in total between both sides of the ball, with special teams guys in there as well.

By the end of the year it felt like GIlmore got leapfrogged by JC Jackson on the depth chart, so I'm not really factoring him in as a DPOTY. Even with your 24/7 doomer attitude I don't think you can make the case that the D is worse off this year than they were last year. Chung's replacement getting drafted last year doesn't automatically mean it was a one to one shift in production immediately, for example.

I'm not arguing that the defense will not improve. They're a year older, Hightower is on the wrong side of 30 and he will probably be done after this year or next year, while the guy we thought was going to replace him got on Bill's bad side and got his snaps reduced last year. The DL is just a bunch of JAGs and the other LBs are either too fresh or JAGs.

When you can't draft you rely on FAs, when you can't even rely on FAs because your coach is an asshole and nobody wants to be near your sinking ship... well that's the Patriots. We could get lucky and get franchise QB at 15, or Bill trades up and takes someone earlier. But I don't see how you have cofidence in his teambuilding after watching him as GM for the past 10 years.
