idk like half the caucus maybe? Feel like that may still be too generous. Senate could probably convict with a secret ballot though. House is where the crazy is concentrated for the most part on the GOP side.

Honestly, replacing the programs with direct, less conditional payments seems good on the surface, especially since it decouples them from taxes (and therefore guarantees the people who need money will still be getting it if e.g they lose their job). I'm sure I'm missing something here, but I don't know what it is.

The real question is whether the Republicans will have any ability to kneecap and sabotage it like they did with the ACA, or if they'll just gut it once they have the power to.

Also yes funding this by not cutting safety nets would be ideal.

Hey, maybe Plum is onto something for once. If we eliminate all the welfare and safety net spending in the federal budget, we could use that money to give every adult in America an $11,000 check every year. How could anyone be opposed to that? Everybody loves free money!

Just to be clear, this is actually a terrible idea.

UBI is a wonderful idea and absolutely should be implemented, but until there's a concrete bill that has the votes to pass Congress we ought to be expanding the social safety net, not reducing it.

Also if the issue is "we can't just give more money to people with children without getting more money from somewhere", might I suggest taxing the wealthy or cutting military spending? I'd be perfectly on board with either of those!

Removing the red tape on deciding who qualifies and who doesn't would be absurdly beneficial and would offset some of the costs.

And it would remove the incentive for people to prove they need welfare.

Right now there is a reward associated with NOT working, or at least pretending you aren't working and doing something under the table instead.

You give "dont freeze or starve" money to *everyone* and remove the other programs and the incentive goes away.

The reason for UBI over targeted is UBI allows people who "Don't need it" to find fulfilling work outside of what they are currently doing without being chained to an often dead end job.

I'm sure there are people making $40000 a year who would much rather be making $20000 and surviving on basic income

$20k a year for every adult would be a bit over $5 trillion a year, which was larger than the entire 2019 US budget.

(And to the extent that people are deciding to retire and live on UBI instead of working you're shrinking the economy, making it even harder to pay for).

Yeah, UBI supporters here don't seem to get exactly how expensive it would be. It's not something you can pay for with just unnoticeable spending cuts and/or taxes on billionaires. You'd be looking at massive cuts to just about every government program (yes, even with the savings from eliminating every current form of welfare spending) and/or huge tax increases for everyone.
