Geez I don't think most people have that many claims in their life let alone in 4 years. I guess it's easy to see why his presidency went up in smoke.

When you compare to the millions of false or misleading claims the media made about him -- including calling his statements false or misleading -- it's a drop in the bucket. Not to mention *all* politicians routinely lie, so "OMG! A POLITICIAN WAS LESS THAN HONEST" is a meaningless statement.

Most importantly, this story comes from WaPo, which isn't so much a real publication as it is Jeff Bezos's personal super-PAC for promoting his friends and attacking his enemies.

To be fair, there's probably a lot of redundancy to the lies Trump told, as one of his tactics was to repeat the same lies over and over so his mush-brained followers would be properly indoctrinated.

Didn't read the article, does the study account for that habit of repetition?

I'm not defending trump at all when i say this but i bet a good portion of those come down to just how the guy talks. because his way of talking is so stupid, he constantly just says throwaway lies that I don't necessarily think have malicious intent. He just talks like an idiot so these things naturally come out.

However, despite that possible musing: Yikes. 30K+ lies!

people who can think for themselves: "lmao trump just asked this woman where her dead family is, what a dumbass lol"

people who have to come up with any excuse to make it seem like trump isn't mentally challenged: "...surely trump meant the other people she mentioned even though it was very obvious he didn't, but surely he had to"

If Trump doesn't want his words to be misconstrued he should know to speak more clearly, because in that example you gave, nothing at all shows us he means anything but the people just referenced(her family). People who can think for themselves are just people waiting for the playbook on how to take his nebulous, half formed statements and mould them into something they can work with.

That's an average of about 21 (~20.93) false or misleading statements a day. That's an average ~0.87192 false or misleading statements an hour. That's an average of one false or misleading statement every 69 minutes.

Of course, that's not accounting for any time Trump presumably spent sleeping, golfing, or otherwise not making public statements.

And it's not really a great metric for comparing him to other presidents or politicians, because this particular bloviating buffoon made a crap ton of public statements. A better metric would be the rate of false or misleading public statements to total public statements.

When you pay attention to them they actually do reveal their own lies. I remember one local story about a woman arrested for a fight on a bus and the reporter talked about hate crime charges because the woman was yelling racial slurs. Then they showed a video of the attack. And it didn't match their usual agenda because the agressor was a black woman making racially motivated comments to a white woman. They buried the story rather quick after that.

This raises several questions.
Had the reporter not seen the video themself and was just reading a script?
Had the news editor not seen the video themself before approving their coverage of it?
Had they seen the video didn't care thinking that the audience won't notice?

I'm seeing a lot of claims that amount to:
"Trump said the new X was the biggest in history when actually the Roman Empire had the biggest X in history."
So the fact checkers are just realy pedantic about what was obviously meant as exaggerated boasting.

Saying "will" isn't an opinion. If it's an opinion you'd use "could." Biden COULD do that. That's my opinion. Biden WILL do that is a matter of fact statement.

The average person understands what rounding is. Complaining about Trump saying 75 million when there were only 74 million weakens the argument. Trump had enough faults of his own that there's no need to make them up. Bolstering the number with claims like this only serves to bury the more legitimate complaints that might be in that list. Further, people will be less inclined to take the list seriously on larger issues because they gave equal signifigance to something so silly.
