This was my thought too. Nothing wrong with an actor playing the opposite gender, but would someone who recently transitioned want to? UA is the type of show where time shenanigans could do anything.

If he does want Vanya to transition, I'm sure the creators would be open to it. Vanya's whole character arc has basically been about self discovery, so it would be easy to write in.

... they've been going through a lot in their life that they may no longer be comfortable with. that's the point of coming out.

Whether Elliot will still be comfortable with the same roles is up to him, but he may very understandably not be okay with it and that's fine. Ultimately we'll have to wait and see, he might not even know himself yet.

this brings up something ive been curious about for a while, maybe someone here would know

in the announcement, Page lists his pronouns as he/they. Ive seen people identify as she/they on a bunch of Twitter profiles in the past too. Whats the point of the they? How is that different from saying your pronouns are just he/him or she/her?

Some people identify specifically with "they" so it is a little different and signals a preference. You see it more often with nonbinary people but it's not that out of place in other scenarios

from what I understand with people I know who have disphoria, is that it's less about wanting to be a different gender but rather a supreme discomfort with the sex they got at birth. They're fine being seen as non-binary (as chances are that's closer to what most trans people feel), but go with opposite gender for sake of simplicity in our gender based world.

He was in Juno, which was a pretty famous film in 2007. He was actually nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards that year for portraying a pregnant teen who wasn't sure whether to give up his unborn baby. There were a lot of people that hated the movie though because of the dialogue that tried really hard to be hip, but it mostly got good reviews.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it still okay to refer to female characters that he played with female pronouns if we are talking about the character and not the actor?

Yeah, I would describe the character as 'she'

I would also probably say it's best to say that Elliot Page was nominated for Best Actress for his role in Juno

I do think the standard of not deadnaming him even though he is a very well known public figure is very pleasantly courteous though, I'm happy to see people doing that

See, this is what I originally thought too, but I actually asked the trans community about this earlier today.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/79146437/947814451

My first instinct was to do as you thought, but it might upset the person in question by doing this. Now my response I got was only from one person, and it might be different among others. You'll really won't see a consistent answer, but I valued an answer more from someone in that community until I hear otherwise from more.

I guess I got tripped up by them saying "Always", so I doubted my initial thought as being wrong.

And no, I wasn't saying CE was specifically a trans community, but I was asking those in that community. The post was from an Elliot Page topic there, so it was already being talked about, and there were those in that community weighing in.

It should be Best Actress regardless, right? Best Actor is a separate category that he wasn't nominated for; there's no contradiction between Elliot being male and Elliot winning Best Actress.

Referring to the character by their pronouns even if they're different than the actor's also makes more sense to me, but if there's a consensus against that then I'd be happy to change course!
