You reminded me I have some more preference stats... day-by-day, who was in the "preference" lead after each elimination:



I had been doing pretty good right up until Day 97, alas...

And for our three "winners", Janus, VI and FFDragon, here's how their average ratings went along the way, starting with the 8.00 average at 15 characters left before ending up at 2.5 with 2 characters left:



FFD taking a hit with the Kefka elimination while VI and Janus had a bounce-up following Barret's, but they all converged towards the end (Janus suffering one last uptick from the terrible Tifa elimination)

Okay now I need to figure out how to get the compatibility stats captured without taking screenshots.... that'll be later today I guess.

Kinda hard to muster up the same excitement I had when I realized Squall was gonna win (Top 3), but LETS FUCKING GO MAN. I don't know why I felt particularly desperate for the win this year, but it just felt possible like it never felt before. Even the last time Squall got 4th, Steiner's win was already telegraphed and usually there was either some other dominating force, or Squall's support predictably petered out. Not that it couldn't have gone awry multiple times. There were multiple points where Squall was near the very bottom of the characters saved, and it was getting through that round that brought on the support necessary to keep going. It was crazy, but that drama made it terribly exciting too!

Man I'm almost gonna miss chasing the title! Look at those stats! Marvelous. It's sad to think Squall won't see another top 10 for a good while, and likely never be in contention for a win again...! But I guess that's also fine? But who cares, because today, we are champions.

Special shout out to my main man, second in command. As the only trader of Squall for like the entire half of the contest, it was a great boon when you jumped on board. Two people can take a character to top 20, and since we didn't pick up anyone until it was absolutely necessary, you were absolutely crucial.

I finally got you to go Squall! Finally! You and swordz represented that extra oomph Squall needed to get to Top 5 that never happened because of your annoyingly strong other preferences (Lightning, Vivi, *grumble*). But hey it finally happened woohoo!

CHRIIIIIIIIIS. You tantalizingly considered Squall for support for years and then got to hop on the final 5 for a win. Lucky! In some strange way though knowing you were on roster was like some guarantee of victory.

You guys are married and such will be treated as a single individual. But this is mostly to Gen because I don't remember charon's involvement in CXIV. Righting wrongs indeed! Sometimes I wonder what kind of weird butterfly effect direction my life would have taken if Squall had won right then and there. Would I have continued to participate? Would Squall have been hardbooted next contest? It felt extra proper to see all these different "factions" come together again after 9 years! Even getting Leon to vote!? Couldn't have asked for a better way to end this.

One of my most steadfast allies in this entire run. Though not a trader, savers like you are necessary in the first half to keep Squall afloat when I miss rounds or am late to stuff. Along with other people on this list and casual like blackdragon, and comm, and sometimes guys like xuxon, and like dante saved squall before for free but I'm not handing out bounty thank yous here! let's get quistis a deeper run sometime!

Congrats pj! I would've jumped to him sooner but I was all contested out after my main left and didn't feel like jumping into another serious saving relationship. But he was my #2 in the top 30 and I like to think I helped a little towards the end by saving+trading+killing Kefka.

Enjoy SMFFFC retirement! And hopefully the FF8 curse is now forever broken.

I had always hoped for a Squall win (he was my #4 behind Tifa, Aerith and Barret), and I like when a long-suffering character with past close calls finally gets their win. Lightning last year, Squall this year and - though I wasn't around for it - Cloud in XIX all fit that bill.

Maybe next year really could be Kefka's year...

Yeah that Kefka elim was pretty pivotal and lucky (for us). But it resulted in @Grimlyn joining the team, maybe my most surprising ally! Opera Omnia ftw. I'll get around to Crystal bearers...after 12 and 13 and maybe trying tactics again

Actually as many point out it could have been Aerith's year. Which reminds me to @Steiner . Unfortunate way to get you on the team but I think thats what you call making lemonade out of lemons!

I'm definitely feeling defeated as far VI's chances go. Just doesn't seem like there are enough people that care at this point. I mean the game hasn't won in 15 contests now, and the times I've tried pointing this out have just been met with total apathy (or with jokes like saying let's keep it that way). I guess us VI people just aren't charismatic enough?
