Here we have a main bracket with not one but two songs I had thought retired. One of them is a bit of a cheat, I guess. And boy is its opponent an assault on the senses. Not pleased. I think I evaluate Lake higher just because it's relief from actual discomfort. Still worse than The Merciless Savior, but would be pleasant to listen to. Very good day but all three matches were smashes.

Megalovania (6.5) / Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade (7.5)
Lake (8.5) / The Merciless Savior (9.0)

Oh, man, I love that second match *____* Here's yet another example of a Pokemon DPP track that wasn't on my setlist in BOST, but easily could have been. I'll likely nominate the game again next time, but with a completely new set of music to demonstrate the depth of the OST. I love Lake! It reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy IV's Troian Beauty, one of my favorite super old-school FF tracks. So peaceful, ah, I can take a heavenly nap. Not a moment in there where it's not interesting in terms of notes or harmonies. Love those descending patterns, and even the countermelody added on top is really nice.

I haven't heard all of the Trails in the Sky SC's soundtrack, but this EASILY one of my favorites I've come across from this game. Very heavy, climactic music here, pretty much the opposite of Lake. It's so different that it's hard to decide who to vote for. Once again, very good harmonies through a big chunk of it! For example, all the 1/2 step harmonic shifts make it feel SO DRAMATIC (a bunch of this happens at 0:33 through like at least 1:30). Love the brass stepping in with those DARK long chords. Then the choir comes in... you know things are getting serious. Love it whenever THAT theme gets quoted (e.g. at 2:21). Violin duet a bit later on is awesome and really maintains the intensity.

No comments on the third match even though I wish I could say something hrhrhr.

Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade
Lake
Chocolate Missile

I feel kind of awkward that Megalovania is in here, considering it's been retired. Of course this is another version, but it's not really "distinct" enough from the retired version for as much as I'd like regarding that sort of thing I guess. Doesn't help that I don't like this version of Megalovania as much as the other version of Megalovania that is retired, what with the more realistic instrumentation with high strings, along with that "dramatic emotional hope" part, and the part before the loop that I liked is replaced with something I don't like as much with the big "overly used well known mascot tune" drowning out the other stuff. Meanwhile, Speed star Kanade is hilarious to me. Yeah it's got vocals but it's got plenty more about it to have me entertained. Like when I first heard :21 I was on a laptop speaker and it just sounded like white noise TV static it's so dumb I love it. There is a silly contrast of the cutesy voices with the strong beatdown of fast paced electric percussion. The weird contradictory environment sort of thing this song gives off throughout make this song more pleasing to listen to than a majority of other songs with vocals too. Maybe I don't dislike these vocals as much or the background noise isn't as obscured behind them are factors that help too. So hey, ultimately the especially silly speed star kanade experience leaves me feeling happier having listened to it than this version of Megalovania, so there is my vote

Lake starts out with one of those "calm peaceful" types of sounds which just feels boring and unwanted to me. Well, up until :48, which really changes up the pace and becomes a much more fun song, even if still a bit calm, but it really works like this now. And then an awkward loop point it returns Merciless Savior starts out with a more "realistic" or high quality instrumentation or something and has that high string I don't like, but the sort of backing aura it's got is much nicer I love that, which ultimately pushes into the positive for me, which gets pushed into a 2nd gear with the synth sounds and cool rhythm at like :32. then whoa at 1:40 things start to get dramatic. And, we've got chanting. Don't give me this chanting. The chanting is worse than the start of Lake for me. Then when it does go away we get back to the song's strength when it's much more pleasing to listen to with the cool synths and cool rhythms, but they get drowned out by the high strings and chanting. This is an awkward match to decide on, these songs both have sections that I love and sections I hate, very polarizing feelings contradicting each other cancelling out into, what? The polar points I would say are stronger on Merciless Savior, but that doesn't really help because that just means they still cancel out. I like it more and I hate it more. I think what makes the difference is the order of the likes & dislikes, and also the length. With Lake I gotta stick it out with a kind of dull garden that eventually really pops and turns into a good experience I can leave happy with, but Merciless Savior starts out all great but gradually just beats me down, drowning out the good with what I do not want, ultimately leaving me less happy, even if technically the ratings if added up together are equal-ish.

Chocolate Missile, probably my favorite vocal song from VGMC13, mostly because there's like no competition for that position lol. It is enjoyable for me though, which is certainly more that can be said of most vocal songs, like I said a few days ago Alice Schach seems to be pleasant to listen to, and maybe this specific fictional language helps too. The glitchy nature of this song is also great for me. In a way I guess this is one of the rare songs where I feel like the vocals don't entirely detract from the experience. 1:28 is a great section. Monolith starts out unimpressive to me, seeming like a typical generic quest song with an unimpressive instrumentation, but the pace picking up at about :27 does help quite a bit. Not enough to bring things on Chocolate Missile's level, and then it just goes forward by going backwards for me, slower more emotional feeling that I don't particularly care for. Again the more upbeat faster paced parts do help recover the song, and the beep sounds somewhat surprise me by feeling out of place, but also not seeming to detract from the experience. But again, Chocolate Missile is great and never quite breaks that threshold that chocolate missile holds for me. also oh no this song is long. But, doesn't ever really impress me enough, at best it meets Chocolate Missile's level but has too much baggage bringing it down for me.

What a weird day today. I'm voting two vocal songs over two non-vocal songs and ALMOST did the same for a 3rd (I'm counting Merciless Savior's chants as vocals). Part of me wants to swap that vote just for full silliness but as I said Lake leaves me happy and Savior leaves me frustrated and I'd rather the song that makes me happy stay in the contest. Plus I don't really dislike the vocals in Speedstar of Chocolate Missile all that much but I loathe the chants in Savior, so , ,

also hey long name for the first match and tiny name for the second match, nice

This is my second favorite version of Megalovania, I think, which is still good.

Why does this exist.

This is a very tranquil lake I bet nobody tries to explode it or anything what a strange game.

this is not the song the liberl needed, but the song that it deserves.

hi nfun.

bagpipes over beeps over horn chords is amazing.

Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade
The Merciless Savior
Chocolate Missile

i wish i didn't love this megalovania version as much as i do. please stop being good
... i probably shouldn't have said that given what my vote is

I actually like lake, but also... it wouldn't even make my top 30 dp songs. factoring in platinum it'd even be outside the top 50. i can think of several songs in its vein of the soundtrack i plainly like more, like, say, eterna forest for instance. curse you lake for making me realise i want to listen to other dpp songs that are not you this is not a normal dpp song reaction for me. but, it's still really good you know
unfortunately though, it's just barely low enough that this match is kind of hard. merciless savior isn't normally the right type of song to be in a remotely favourable matchup here, but there are some legitimately outstanding moments in it (mostly involving its supersweep chanting).

unsurprisingly, i still enjoy choco missile a decent amount. maybe not as much as last year though
i don't think i ever really gave monolith a fair chance given what it beat. that said, even though i'm a little bit lower on its opponent here than usual, this really isn't the match for it... in fact, its entire bracket isn't really. probably one of my least favourite retirees even after removing my bias

Megalovania
The Merciless Savior
Monolith

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Megalovania at 8.1 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! I definitely prefer the Undertale's, or even the OG. It just seems... cleaner to me. Less muddy. The violin towards the middle is a good addition though. I hate to be That Guy, but the whole song is kind of played out. Perversely, I'm still fine with the original; it's variants I'm kind of sick of. IN ANY CASE, it doesn't need to be that good to beat its opponent, and it'd have to be REALLY good to win next round, so really almost any song could be here and I'd vote identically.

SOUND VOLTEX IV HEAVENLY HAVEN - Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade at RANKING SPOILERS? is my ???th song in the contest!! I don't remember if I revealed the ranking for this explicitly or not yet but needless to say, I hate it. Sin. Sinners repent.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum - Lake at 8.8 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! The perfect earbleach for Speed Star Kanade. Beautiful and relaxing without being trite and repetitive. Just a real solid, pretty tune. Its matchup is... unfortunate.

Trails in the Sky SC - The Merciless Savior at 9.8 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! You ever just listen to a song for 14 hours? Me, yesterday. This is my second favorite SC song (behind Looking Up at the Sky) which is saying a LOT! Weirdly enough, this was like the fourth SC song I heard part of because I was looking through the game's music folder for the aforemention song before people gave me its title. I only heard the very beginning so no real spoilers there. It's just a masterpiece of weird adventurous prog violins and EPIC DRAMATIC CHANTING and EMOTIONAL violins with FEELINGS and it's just SO GOOD throughout its whole thing. I spent at least a solid hour on this boss and didn't mind at all. I lost a quarter of my party members ten minutes into the fight and didn't mind at all. This song is one of the rare type that I can just listen to and feel all of my cares fly away in the wind. It's DESTINY and HAPPINESS and REMEMBRANCE and QUALITY and GOODNESS. Fuck the transition into the prog thirty seconds in. Fuck the emotional low strings three minutes in. Fuck just AAAAAHHH SO GOOD! I LOVE Trails in the Sky (play it), but this is definitely one of a few songs I can say I'd love equally as much divorced from the game entirely because it's SO GOOD. FUCK

Cytus II - Chocolate Missile at 8.1 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! This is another one of those songs I keep listening to to see if I'm missing anything and I'm perpetually disappointed that I'm not. Not to say it doesn't have value; it does. I just can't seem to see what justifies it killing ALL OF MY FAVORITE SONGS. Rips Soaring, 9.9. Rip Murderswarm, 9.4. Chocolate Missile, you're just there. Nice enough to listen to, nothing I'd deliberately seek out except to try to understand what allure you seem to have.

Cloudbuilt: Defiance - Monolith at 8.3 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! Sorry to say, but you don't do a lot for me either. You're also just there, but at least there in a clearly more pleasant way than Chocolate Missile. Bagpipes are cool

Megalovania (126th) vs ChouChouKouSokuDeMaeSaiSoku!!! SpeedStarKanade (190th)
Lake (49th) vs The Merciless Savior (138th)
Chocolate Missile [55th] vs Monolith (35th)

okay so i realize how bad the first vote looks since kanade is 190th. while voting, I always take into consideration both how much i like it personally and how good i think it is conceptually. Usually these overlap and there isn't just a gap between my opinions of the two. By usually I mean.... in almost every case ever lol. I can think of three songs ever where the gap between those two is like.... upwards of 2 full points on a 10 point scale, and Kanade is one of them. Its current score put it at a 5.5/10 for personal rankings, but I love that it exists and does what it does. Maybe it's like... audio stockholm syndrome or something. Megalovania has been overplayed to death and while I do particularly love the ASGORE callback in this version it's otherwise a strict downgrade to the original. When I listen to Megalovania I'm completely numb to its existence now but when I listen to Kanade, I'm actually interested enough to listen to all the absurd bullshit. It all comes down to with I would listen to the song voluntarily. Both songs I would not. One song I would at least have something to think about while listening to it, and that's Kanade. fuck you song also this is a useless vote anyway so w/e. Should note that the exact thing that makes Kanade higher makes Megalovania lower as well; I personally think it's really really good but I just can't listen to it anymore for like... a couple years would be nice.

i actually dont have much to say on this match; lake is just SUPER CHILL and pleasant to listen to and makes me feel like i'm on a cruiseship on a crisp morning rather than at a lake. merciless savior is good but i don't have anything particular to say about it; just just as hell! it's actually the lowest song that i would say "i love" (its still a 7.0) so anything above it i love more, and anything below i dont love but may just "like it" or "hate it" or "think things about it maybe maybe i don't think about it as well i dont know POKEMON

chocolate missile :(((((( you do so many things i should love but I don't care about you at all somehow!!!! what is it about you i dont understtanaaaaandnadne. my brain hurty right now I can't really think while i lisdten to this I'M SORRY. AAAA monolith is pretty cool!! chiptune and fake bagpipe and MALLET PERCUSSION its fun to listen to. pretty strong feelings about this one lol

kanade broke my brain

Azuarc forgot what day it was again.

Megalovania
Lake
Monolith

SSBU > Undertale > Halloween Hack > Homestuck. Just saying. There are other versions too, obviously, but those are the important ones. And I guess the only ones that are really official? Actually I don't know maybe the Undertale version is better than this. It's a tough call. I'd just been binging Homestuck because I'm afraid I might not get another chance with Flash discontinuing at the end of the year. Why did we disqualify it from VGMC again? There's a lot more interactivity than I remember. At the very least, the music from the adventure game sequences should count.

...Oh wow this is adorable. I love it. Not enough to vote for it over Megalovania, but given how much I've lamented some of the songs that keep coming back, I'll have to take note of this title since the reception to it seems really negative but it made it in anyway! Time for me to be the tormentor for once.

DPP might stealth be the best soundtrack in the Pokmon series, though I'm still partial to B/W. Friggin' DS! So underrated. God, I have half a mind to dig out my copy of either Pearl or Platinum and get back to it. Whichever one I didn't cheat with an Action Replay to get all the legendaries.

Oh this is nice too! How am I supposed to make a decision on this?! ...Oh, that's how.

I had very mixed feelings about Chocolate Missile throughout its run. At one point I thought it was incredible, and at another I hated it. So far I'm not liking it!

This, on the other hand, is outstanding. Best of the day, and it's been a strong day.

SSBU Megalovania is pretty good! Not sure if better than Undertale version, but maybe? I think I'd prefer chou kousoku over chou chou kousoku tbqh. This kinda devolves into nonsense rather than being something fun.

Did we get two lake songs from this game in? This one's not great. Not a fan of the start of Merciless Savior either.

Real tough ToC match! Two classics here.

Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade
Lake
Chocolate Missile

Oh its one of these days huh

Megalovania vs Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade: Megalovania is Megalovnia. Its good but the remix doesn't do much. The part at 1:45 where all the motifs pull up is very cool it makes me want to listen to the Undertale soundtrack and not this remix. Its good but thats all it is. I have no way to describe Kanade so this will have to do. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. That being said, I'm voting Kanade today.

Lake vs The Merciless Savior: Lake is probably one of my all time favorite pokemon songs. Its very relaxing and is something I find myself listening to on loop every now and then. Merciless Savior on the other hand I'm not a fan of. It starts off weird and then that choir just irritates the hell out of me. The rest of the song has been both schleep and schlumped at the same time so this is a hard pass for me.

Chocolate Missile vs Monolith: Delicious name for a sweet song. I wasn't feeling it for the first half but once 1:30 hit I really started getting into it. The rest of the song was a pretty big improvement as well, so thats nice. Monolith is an interesting track. It feels like it keeps building up as the song goes on but I'm not feeling any of the momentum its trying to get started. I don't think the track is bad despite that, but I just wish it actually did something.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Megalovania
Pokmon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum - Lake
Cytus II - Chocolate Missile

Match 1: Ah yes, this match is a classic example of what I like to call being fed to the wolves. Although from a my own viewpoint, this isn't even the biggest personal blowout, I just think it's funny that Speed Star Kanade got this matchup in R1.

Match 2: As much as I love Pokmon battle music, this series is great at chill atmospheric music too, and it's a nice change of pace every once in a while. I've never been too crazy for The Merciless Savior. The intro sounds oddly jarring, then it goes drags on for a long time. It has violins, but it does exactly what I don't what them to be doing . The choir sounds too much like Fire Emblem music.

ToC: Chocolate Missile has a fun and unique sound, I love this sort of stuff. Monolith sounds like movie trailer music, but I am enjoying this more than I remember.

Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade
The Merciless Savior
Chocolate Missile

Megalovania is my 191st favorite in the contest! this probably looks like some contrarian ranking placement but i just do not like this song ESPECIALLY not this version, normal megalovania's a bit higher but still 3/10. other undertale music's a bit more my thing but i tend to prefer deltarune music by a lot when it comes to toby fox. i don't want to waste my time and energy trashing this but basically it's a combo of a bunch i dislike at once: blues scale being half the basis of the track (used extra plainly and mechanically at that), and mixed horribly, reverb drenched in a way that makes it impossible to hear anything that could potentially be cool...everything just sounds like glhkjdlfgm;kb;mud. "carnival fast 2&4 drums battle theme" all the playful choromatic stuff in the composition feels very strained and forced to me for some reason like it's trying too hard to be funny halloween quirky song but instead it's grandma emerald's really big beeswax factory educational building where you learn about the ABCs and how to count to the number "too lazy". its not that i'm "tired of it" because it's overpopular or what ever, honestly i usually forget it has the status it has, it just literally is the antithesis of what i like. if i want to be excited about popular indie game song i will be excited about like idk Positive Force or Rude Buster or whatever the most popular shovel knight song is or Umbral Ultimatum from the video game homestuck or Literally Any Other Undertale song. toby fox was a composer that excited me from the a long time ago times, and i still love a lot from him now, but battle tower and "smash ver of megalovania" might be specifically my 2 least favorite songs from him and they're both in this contest somehow lol. his other stuff mostly ranges from OK to AMAZING to me so i hope i do not come across as Big UndertALe FOX TOBY hater because i am definitely NOT that but this particular track is just not for me. still gets a 3/10 because it is EPIC enough for me to think it's a big adventure battle. if you like this song that is ok : ) sorry that I do not like it : ( sorry for wasting my time being mean to it even though i said i didn't want to do that.

Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade is my 116th favorite in the contest! I wish this was not the NOFX version and had all the crazy filters/effects that get put onto it in-game, i feel more than most sound voltex music this is meant for that. speedcore kickdrum drilling/buzzing sound craziness is way more pronounced and the mix just winds up sounding better in-game when it's put through those filters. Anyway i unironically do like this song, come back to it every once in a while, i'd like it more if the vocals were less loud only because I want more clarity of the crazy glitchy programmed drums behind them. i honestly don't see this track as super weird just because i know lots of people into speedcore/extratone and adjacent stuff and i like some of it too sometimes, i'm not like super well versed in that stuff outside of a few artists honestly but i like much of it so this track doesn't come across as a weird novelty to me. it's like an entire genre and this is just a random example and it's a silly one but the entire concept of the genre is a silly one so Who Cares. this'd honestly be a high tier example from it if i were fonder of the mixing (or if the vocals were different/quieter), but it does jump up like 50 ranking slots when it's the in-game version with the effects atop! (maybe i'll nominate an in-game recording of this next year..................) Fun! Music!

now i am looking up speedcore remixes of undertale music for some reason haha. i'd possibly vote "MEGALOVANIA (Camellia Remix)" (thank you for pointing the existence of this out to me uf8) and "Toby Fox - MEGALOVANIA (Algorithm Dude Trash Mix) [UNDERTALE, SPEEDCORE]" over speed star kanade. wish more of these remixes were not megalovania

Lake is my 57th favorite in the contest! one of my favorite effects in music to an almost excessive degree is fading in/reversed chords with an abrupt cut off and that is a GOOD neat spread out voiced maj9th chord it sounds like super monkey ball for orchestra. So my favorite element here is easily that. everything else comes together to make it nice and fun too though. arpeggeios both fast and slow are nice, i like sequenced drums in pokemon music usually in gen 3-5, they're nice and detailed~! honestly there's A LOT going on in this song at once for something this chill, it all interlocks and intersects nicely. go ichinose regularly has cool "nostalgic" chord progressions that make me happy : ) sometimes. this is one of those times!

The Merciless Savior is my 26th favorite in the contest! 5/4! Yay! I always liked how smooth the 5 here is (to the point i never noticed it was in odd time until much after i first heard it) and it's neat that it somehow works in this 90s fake piano electronic dance music context. this track is an example of something i rank highly because it manages to touch a bunch of unrelated things i like at once, it's proggy (odd time and cool chords/chord changes), it has natural elements (cool strings/brass and cool chanting), has "90s dance music" elements (the fake piano on that 5/4 rhythm reminds me so much of "Little Planet" from sonic cd jp version, which is one of my favorites from that game), and i guess in general i just like it. I'm ecstatic that these things that might not be hard to find on their own, but are hard to find in combination, are all in one song. That's important for me because that's the way to rise to the top in my tastes. it's effortless to find any random 90s dance music with fake piano & synth, or any random epic chanting violin melody vgm song, bit harder to find "prog" but it's still like, a genre. this isn't a "genre", you can't just like, find an example of a song that mixes all these unrelated things I spend time struggling to seek out so easily. To me that's a big deal and why I value this song so much. the chord changes in this track make me FALL OVER they are so PERFECT thank you Wataru Ishibashi for making this song come to life, your time on this earth was valuable and you made wonderful music that made it a better world to be in

who made this matchup wtf not fair : (((((((

Chocolate Missile is my 14th favorite ToC entrant! this retired recently so i don't have too much motivation to talk about it but i liked it from the start, but it's continued to grow on me. really nice retiree and it nails a LOT of things i look for at once. cool chord changes/sound desig

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Megalovania
Trails in the Sky SC - The Merciless Savior
Cytus II - Chocolate Missile

MATCH 1

Man, imagine showing this video to people at the beginning of Smash Ultimate's release when the "Sans in Smash" memes were everywhere. Megalovania's a great song, both this and the original version, and I'm glad that we're past the point of this song suffering from overplay, at least for me. With this version, I like some of the really distinct things about it like the piano starting at 1:12 and the added guitar. The latter especially holds true from around 1:56-2:12. The ASGORE/Heartbreak motif thrown in there is a nice addition to the song.

Okay, I actually enjoy Speed Star Kanade to an extent haha. Part of it is in a humorous sense because the crazy glitchy stuff is just so absurd it's funny. In the sense of enjoying music, the cutesy vocals are enjoyable, but this would be so much better to me if it didn't go so heavy on the crazy rhythm game percussion and all that. Kinda reminds me of how Tox feels about Soflan-chan but somewhat inversely, where Tox would rather the vocals not be there so that it focused on everything underneath, and I would rather the glitchy stuff go away in Speed Star Kanade so that the vocals could be more prominent and some potential melodic stuff in the background could pop out as well. Here's a great example of a song I really like with similar vocals and a slight rhythm game song feel (more pronounced at certain parts), but without any of the crazy stuff that Speed Star Kanade has: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcBDREvIcmY
Though, the glitchiness is clearly what the appeal is for many people who like this song, so this song would likely be extremely unappealing for those people lol.

MATCH 2

This match is evil!! By far the craziest round 1 match in the whole contest this year and it pains me to vote against either of these songs because they're so good. Without a doubt my top 2 songs for today. At this point, there won't even be another early round matchup this strong for me unless round 2 Ar-ciel Ar-manaf vs. Moonlight Concert happens!

The first 47 seconds of Lake is the best thing about this song for me! I think Tox, in part, explains why when he says that it has "'nostalgic' chord progressions that make [him] happy." I love those lush, thick chords that fade in. The melody, too, is so soft and tranquil. It has this feeling of "everything's gonna be alright" to it. The rest of the song is nice too. Very playful in its rhythm and fast, downward piano notes. Probably one of my favorite Pokemon songs if I had to point some out!

Merciless Savior is such a crazy powerful, emotional song! Starts off with this dark violin melody then goes into this synth-y part with another cool violin melody. The sharp stabs of piano chords are also pretty neat during that part. Then there's this really cool transition to the choir part! More dark chord changes there that I like a lot. All of 2:49-4:06 is my favorite part of the song! More powerful violin melodies and brass backings with the choir intermittently coming in. Honestly, words can't describe how much I love that part and really the whole song in general. Top-tier Falcom song right here. How has this song only gone to round 2 at its peak? *checks prior brackets* Wow, matched up against Palm of a Tiny Hand round 2 in VGMC8. That's basically two very different songs that are both insanely good examples of their respective genres. I can understand that loss and I'd be unbelievably torn in that match. A 10-16 loss to You're Mine in VGMC11 round 1 though? That's an easy vote for Merciless Savior from me, even though I like You're Mine. All that rambling aside, I hope Merciless Savior gets a much better run this year! Especially since Love Scope, sadly, was knocked out, making Merciless Savior my favorite remaining song in the whole left side of Bracket C.

MATCH 3

As I mentioned during the Bad End Syndrome match, Chocolate Missile is definitely my preferred Alice Schach song! I just like the melody here a lot more. Nice bright and upbeat melody that's very nice! 1:13-1:29 has this neat whimsical and slightly cinematic feeling (the latter referring to the instrumentation) to it as well. It wasn't my preferred retiree during VGMC13 but I was pleased with it in the end!

Monolith's a decent song, but honestly, much of the song is only "okay" with some good parts in the song here and there, which makes the song a bit of a chore to listen through, but I don't really feel like I want to turn it off (in case that's implying otherwise, I did listen to the full song). Some of the good parts of this song are 1:46-2:12 and 3:19-3:58. The melody's noticeably better in those parts compared to the rest of the song and I particularly like the bagpipes in the latter part. Looking at the VGMC11 bracket again, I definitely would've picked Flower, Yesterday's Opponents, and Id ~ Purpose over it if I had been a participant that year. Sorry that this writeup's a little more negative than I'd like it to be because it's a fine song, I'm just not that enthusiastic about it.

SSBU Megalovania is a notable downgrade from Undertale Megalovania (which IIRC is a downgrade from Homestuck Megalovania but it's been a while) so I think in most matches I'd be voting against it. ...this was not most matches.

ya go my merciless savior.

Argh ToC so mean. Two of my favorite newcomers. Swung on this a few times while listening.

Megalovania -- ear rape is still rapey, even if a bit less so.
Merciless Savior -- I'm on record for not being a fan, but Lake is just a pleasant filler track.
Monolith -- D-tier Rayark song is D-tier. I hope the people voting this support Evolution Era.

-this track's presence bugs me in a few different ways. I think it's an unmitigated downgrade from undertale's version-- the modification of the bass and melody at 0:42 feel cornier than the original, the bass at 0:46 hits a note I think is worse than the original, the portamento slide at 0:54 feels worse. the arrangement makes the track feel more laboured at times, and the moments where it should have a sharper presence feel muddy (1:47-- if that guitar is riffing like that, maybe soften the accompaniment, dampen some of the higher frequencies relative to the lead? find a guitar patch with more body and presence? I dunno I'm no professional but that section feels kinda messy).
-but it's not just that-- why is this here? maybe instead of this downgraded facsimile of a retired track, nominated ostensibly to work around a system put into place to encourage new things in the contest to shine instead of retreading old favourites until the end of days, we could have had nilin the memory hunter. or duality! (or duality!!)
-ssbu megalovania walks onto the scene and sans comes to greet it. "my brother'd really like to see an unretired track... so, y'know, it'd really help me out... if you kept pretending to be one."
-Chou chou kou soku de mae sai soku!!! Speed star Kanade. hmm. hmmm.
-I don't think I can vote for speed star kanade in good faith. I don't particularly enjoy speed star kanade's brand of speedcore, I like undertale's take on megalovania some amount, and this remix doesn't damage it enough for me to dislike it outright. still, ssbu megalovania-- you're gonna have a bad time.

-lake. very pretty track! really like the relaxed 6/8 feel of the first part and the descending notes on the piano/harp synth; it evokes a sort of otherworldly calm and beauty. the section where it switches to a 3/3/2 beat pattern with faster percussion is cool in a different way, though it disrupts the calmer vibe of the track overall in a way I don't know if I really agree with. This section sort of resolves the track melodically, and that's nice, but I wish the percussion were a bit subtler.
-merciless savior. pretty neat track, with a buildup to the synth at 0:33 which is a very cool entrance. the violin paints a pretty interesting melody and works with the 10/8 rhythm here pretty nicely. suddenly ominous choral section gives sort of a 'boss is member of religious authority' vibe (which I think is something that shows up in other trails tracks). then there's an extended section where the violins riff on top of the main 8-chord progression. this is kinda neat but I think it overstays its welcome a bit, especially given it returns to this after revisiting the opening section.

-the other day (actually the bad end syndrome match day) I tried listening to chocolate missile from sort of a 'first time listening to this, let's be critical' mentality (as opposed to the actual state of having listened to this a great deal since I first ran into it). the vocals might not appeal, or the melody they follow (fitting in a surprisingly narrow vocal range). some of the different aesthetics the track adopts may come off as corny. a flow that feels scattershot rather than dynamic, unremarkable vocal prowess-- I can see the case against it.
-who am I kidding though-- I love this track. if you take just the melody line out of context, it's actually not that interesting, but the chords underneath transform it into something really cool, which I find pretty mesmerizing. I like how the song grows and shrinks in size and arrangement, and morphs. the stutter and glitch effects add neat aspects to the accompaniment, and express an aesthetic without dominating the track. it goes through this whirlwind of styles but I don't lose the thread connecting it all. it doesn't feel rushed to finish everything in two minutes, or adopt certain conventions for tracks picked for rhythm games that I find tired. I just enjoy this through and through.
-I heard monolith and immediately thought 'oh I definitely compared this to hybrid's Higher than a Skyscraper at one point'. it really does remind me of it! I think it lays out a pretty nice base feel, but my main objection to this track is that it sits on it a bit too much. some meaningful variance in the repeating chord progression would go a long way. there's a brief moment where it looks like it's going to do that (at 5:44)! but then it goes back to safety soon afterward. monolith feels somewhat, well, monolithic. even the brief callback to cloudscapes and speed doesn't shake it up in a way that really strikes me.
