EXEC PAJA
Two Dragons
YOaTI

Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia - EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. at 9.2 is my 1st favorite Exa Pico discovery of the contest! The atmosphere in this is SO GOOD. It's all just SO GOOD. The part where the instrumentation drops out at 3:40 is kind of whatever, but the whispery thing at 4:08 makes up for it. It kind of think it should've ended there tbh. Great song.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg - Chant This Charm at 9 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! How do you even rate this? The name is accurate; this is one of the most charming songs I've ever heard. The recorders, the cheesy lyrics and silly engrish, the almost cliched happy riffs... I also have a huge smile when I listen to this song. I really expected to rate this lower but when I'm listening to it I just CAN'T. I CANNOT.

Yakuza 0 - Two Dragons at 9.3 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! This song makes me want to GO ON A BOAT and TAKE OFF MY SHIRT and PUNCH A DRAGON DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS. All of the Y0 boss fights themes are excellent. Honestly a perfect blend of EPIC METAL and MELODRAMA and DESTINY that is AMAZING despite being CHEESY AS FUCK. Sorry Kirby, but THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE DRAGON (mysterious trap shouldve been switched with chronicleseven so that would make sense)

Kirby Triple Deluxe - Mysterious Trap at 8.6 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! This has pretty similar appeal to Waterworks in my eyes, I dunno. The dissonance 50 seconds in is pretty cool. I like really overt dissonance like that (speaking of DRAGONS battle against a dragon from legend of legacy shouldve been here :()

Popn Music 18 - Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite at 8.5 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! The blend of traditional Japanese instrumentation and the very heavy guitars and nice singer is definitely something. Some days I'd probably think it's lame. Today I think it's cool. I don't think the mixing is great or the guitars are low quality; if that were fixed I'd like it even more.

Atelier Ayesha - Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients at 9.85 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! This perhaps holds the record for how much I like a song vs how much I was cheering for it to lose in any match. You are my favorite Ayesha battle theme (which is saying a lot), but you're not IF Autumn.

v strong day

Chant This Charm
Mysterious Trap
Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite

match 1 sure is a match. both of these appeal to me in ways that i wouldn't normally expect to come up here, and i like them outside of those aspects too

2 dragons... exists. i don't know why it exists in this contest though, barely any of it elicits an emotion from me. mysterious trap on the other hand is an exciting song that almost feels like a convenient fusion of both match 1 songs lol (well, not really but vaguely close)

2 songs i wish i liked more these days. fortunately, i'm also in a better mindset for them than usual thanks to the other songs today. yoati has a fun range of instruments and uses them to change the mood very effectively. kurokami midareshi on the other hand is a very pre-vgmcx song that was exactly my shit then. i don't think i'd normally be as into it still as i am right now.

could plausibly flip on 1 and 3 today because their opponents are up there too

Mysterious Trap
Yesterday's Opponents are Today's Ingredients

that xylophone solo is PERFECT and then the song just keeps going and it's so good especially the bit before the last verse where we get the super dark lyrics ending with "i do but obey, i do but sing" with the music falling away and just radio static and it's so good! I could go on for days but that previous statement is a lie I could not.

Chant the charm is actually really cute and I'd vote for it over a lot but not here.

Two Dragons is pretty cool, like a lot of Yakuza tracks, but I feel like it sits on a phrase for longer than I'd like sometimes.

Mysterious Trap is surprise GUST where did you come from?! well not quite gust, maybe more PMD, but this feels so much deeper to me than kirby stuff usually does I'm so confused but I'm okay with it.

ToC is too tough this better be another triple overtime so I can spend another three days waffling between them. Well not that tough I think I always settle on Yesterday's but With Billowing Raven Hair Unto Carnage I Become or however I feel like translating that title today is one of my all-time favorites too so. I guess this is what you numbers people call a "9.5 vs. 10" scenario.

PAJA okayish I guess? Not as good as Cloche yesterday, and that still wasn't one of my AT favs. Chant This Charm is like a bad Katamari song. Easy match.

Two Dragons a pretty solid Yakuza song. I think I liked yesterday's Kirby song better.

Never been that into Kurokami. One of the worst rhythm game retirees we've had (maybe the worst period?). YOATI not a top Atelier song either, though it's good enough.

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. (8.5) / Chant This Charm (8.0)
Two Dragons (4.5) / Mysterious Trap (9.5)

What a seriously fantastic day of music today. Mysterious Trap, is so novel and cool this HAS to be illegal. SERIOUSLY cool use of prepared piano...oh, man, thank you John Cage, I finally have a reason to be grateful your music exists. Sounds so exotic, esp. at 0:22....Starting at 0:46, man, what IS THAT? Traditional tonality says bye bye. Seems to mostly revolve around major 2nds. Especially that "dominant" at 0:57, whoa. Turns out the piano does a little foreshadowing of that after 0:31. Chimes and tam tam at the end round out the brilliance.

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting.
Mysterious Trap
Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite

I see EXEC, I automatically assume shit. And it took a while for there to even be enough substance in this song for it to be considered shit, but shit it was! At least there's a chance it won't be dead last, because we've got one of my most hated songs in the ToC up today!

Or, you know, I could end up actually voting for the Ass Tonelico song. OH GOD THERE'S WORDS. Stop it now; I don't even want to listen to the end, or anything close to the end.

...Fuck. The Ass Tonelico song's going to be in the top half. Why is the Ass Tonelico song going to be in the top half?

Okay finally we have a song that is not completely ass. It's still not great, but it's at least okay, which is pretty good for today.

And finally, we get a song that's...good. Not outstanding, but good. Still feels like the type of thing I would've absolutely adored as a teenager, which isn't really a positive because I consider my teenage self to be kind of an embarrassment.

Yeah, same goes for this song. It's an absolute comedy, listening to this. The edge, it is slicing me to ribbons. So edgy. I can't even get up any good loathing for this song, I'm laughing too hard at it. But I was wrong about Ass Tonelico making the top half, because instead, this day was so bad that the ToC song I already knew I disliked makes the top half!

Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite > Mysterious Trap > Yesterday's Seymour Battles are Today's Ingredients are Tomorrow's Whatever the Hell Comes Out of the Right Side Of Bracket A > EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. > Two Dragons > Chant This Charm

Yeah, couldn't help but take another shot at Bracket A, while also acknowledging the only time I voted not for the song I felt more deserving of retiring, but the one that I had less desire to see in any further contests. Shouldn't have to worry about this stinky day producing a retiree, though; I'm not familiar with any of the songs that they could be facing in Round 3 just yet, but their potential R4 opponents all look solid! (Yes, I have faith that it's almost impossible for the C2 Wild Card to suck; that part of the bracket looks stacked, though I'm quite fond of a couple of the other C1 songs.)

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting.
Mysterious Trap
Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. is my 10th favorite in the contest! My favorite Ar Tonelico 1 song probably too! fake gamelan-ish solo to start off, fading in cool vocal chord with abrupt cut off, cool slap bass! WOW, lots of things I like all at once right off the bat. I like how long-phrased the backing choir and melody stuff is throughout, takes like 4 bars at least before it feels like it lines up with the barlines. and there's so many cool multilayered vocal parts. fun 7/4 at 1:55 though it's actually one of my lesser favorite parts of the track, mostly because it's ironically not as weird as the rest, but it's still a welcome contrast in the context of the rest of the music surrounding it. My favorite portion is 3:39 for its extreme barline ambiguity, and "mixed meter where it's ambiguous where the downbeat is" is my favorite type of mixed meter! I count that part as 9/4, 6/4, 4/4, 4/4, 9/4, 6/4, 4/4, 9/8, 7/4, 6/4, 7/4, 4/4, 4/4 before going to the tv static break, but there's so many different ways you could interpret it because bar divisions are so obfuscated. the whole 3:39 section is made even more stimulating by how multilayered it is with the vocals there. whoa just realized these metallic sound effects toward the end i've heard in other tracks before COOL I like recognizing synth presets and samples...! Overall the instrumentation is to my tastes and this is undeniably rhythhmically intricate and obviously that's a thing I always love! also tonality is very much my thing too, this is phrygian in a bunch of places and that's a scale that I LIKE because it is DARK and sounds like a EVIL DESERT WHERE THE SUN IS OUT TOO Bright(i guess that is the opposite of darkk...), but the more conventional minor scale stuff is a nice breath of "Not Quite As Tense" air too, the alternation between these modes is powerfulTHERE ARE SO MANY COOL SOUNDS IN THE BACKGROUND And there is not enough time to liste all of them (I like this song that is why I supported it and also ranked it 10th!)

Chant This Charm is my 172nd favorite in the contest! this song is TOO HAPPY for me because i am too edgy > : ( but i do like some billy hatcher music but this song is to funy for me. There's some cool chords sometimes. i don't actually hate listening to it or anything but it's a pretty not-for-me song

Big Gap (right side of bracket B and left side of bracket C have a LOT of these...)

|||||||||||||||||||||||||

Two Dragons is my 173rd favorite in the contest! i don't dislike this in any way but i have never understood the popularity of this one. I like edgy metal epic orchestra at the same time songs as a style, but there's like 90923084 other songs that sound like this that don't feel like they do not exist. this is like the most barebones song in this style and there's nothing that stands out to me about it. Why this out of everything that sounds like this? Normally when i'm not a fan of something that i see a lot of praise for i can still understand the appeal, but this one i understand 0 (get it? 0?! ha ha). The suddenly organic sounding melody at 3:21 is pretty BIG i like that feeling, nice contrast from the big blocks of angry columns.

Mysterious Trap is my 27th favorite in the contest! I love modern kirby music! Things i've said about other modern kirby music apply here too, just every possible zone of empty space being filled with something is a really cool feeling, never a pause. Not that having moments of pause is a bad thing for music to have, but the feeling of there being NOTHING empty and always 5 possible things to pay attention to at once is amazing. Instrumentation is ultra my thing, tuned mallet perc everywhere~! fun woodwinds but FAKE SITAR (i love "fake sounding sitar" as a very specific thing). and of course all the totally detuned parts have such a bizarre cool feeling. It feels like a familiar environment (desert? i have no clue where this plays in-game) but foreboding to a degree of reality distorting proportions. the drum loops being pitched down/low quality's a wonderful effect. This track actually reminds me a ton of Ar tonelico as weird a comparison as that may be, but there's tons of FAKE SITAR and this kind of electronic percussion all over that stuff. very inspirational stuff

wat ever

|||||||||||||||||||||||||

Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite is my 21st favorite ToC entrant! oh i forgot that this video was music audio sounds like a really old youtube (low quality). if I didn't know this song well already i would demand a higher quality video before judging this match but i know it' a song that i know my opinion on. I like the strings and the rhythms of the strings because they are "weird" (rhythm game song). The guitars going durrrgnn too loud to hear the cool things and "too fast drums" are the typical things i complain about but i don't mind them as much as usual here, something about this context lets them just drive a faster pace for me without me finding it too SILLy. THE PIANO CHORDS are so cool at so many places. 2:53 is really good. 3:06 is really piano. yeah i like epic fake traditional japan song with frantic piano and strings vaguely proggy ok. It's not my favorite version of something like this i'd rather listen to muramasa or even okami examples of this angle, but it's still nice and makes me happy : )

Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients is my 9th favorite ToC entrant! i feel like i talked about this too recently for there to be much new for me to say about it. I love all the dissonance, cool stark glitchy electronic effects are cool and make this cool. Love the instrumentation. This is fun, edgy, natural, artificial, and proggy all at the same time~! Kazuki Yanagawa is so cool and top tier gust composer

if you listen to atelier you go into the big cylinder ha ha

Two Dragons (162nd) vs Mysterious Trap (168th)
Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite [38th] vs Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients [12th]

EXECUTE PURGER Sorry Aurica, your song aint got nothin' on Misha's... but that doesn't matter here. I still like this one a lot! A lot more than I remember that I used to even up to about a year ago, even. Haruka Shimotsuki nasal chanting is literally always a blast to listen to so I really can't knock this one that much at all. Evil glockenspiel makes me feel hollow inside like I'm rattling around and emitting EVIL SOUND ENERGY OOOHHHHH SPOOKY MY VOICE IS A WEAPON. On the other side of EVIL GIRL DAGGER WORDS we have a child playing with a bucket and shovel in a sandbox on a sunny day and he looks at you and laughs :) very happy smiley!! Chant This Charm actually reminds me a LOT of dj.w/d.jw/.djw/.gjw jesus christ wac make up your mind ANYWAY wac songs like Lucy/murmur twins/moon_child especially with the reverby soft almost whisper-y female vocals. It sounds very cool, but I don't care much for the song outside of its happy feel so it definitely falls flat and PAJA picks up the slack.

ohhh heyyyy two dragons aka not-metal gear rising orchestral EDM fusion stuff yeaaaaah okay. it's alright, but I don't really care for it that much. Actually, the same goes for Mysterious Trap, but the Kirby-ness in Mysterious Trap at least makes me feel like I want to pay more attention to the song than I do with Two Dragons, so I'm "going against my ranking" (they're both 6.8s lol) on this one.

Fun fact about Kurokami, this was actually the first 12 I had ever hard cleared in IIDX which is... bizzare because it's an easy 12 but not one of "THE" easy 12s. I was just pretty good for some reason at mashing out jack chords (having to re-hit the same chords quickly in 8th or ever 16th notes which is mostly prominent in the intro) and that's what is really killer about the chart. Anyway, Kurokami is pretty middling TOMOSUKE affair honestly; which does not mean it's anything less than great! I actually have to give it a lot of credit for making me like this kind of style that I don't normally like, but that's what TOMOSUKE is a master at doing for me I've found.... and then when he does a song in a style I love it ends up as an absolute favorite lol (hello Todestrieb, IMPLANTATION, every Zektbach song uhhhh oh wait....... YOATI IS TOO GOOD THO FOR REAL immediately in the intro those fucking grungy guitars SMACK you in the face and then you get that chilling complete pause before getting SMACKED again and then the song just takes its time smacking you around before it deems you worthy for its golden fruits at 0:25 and youre on this WILD RIDE of atelier fun flute and atelier grunge guitar THE EFFECTS AT 1:05 TOO GOOD. definitely my favorite song in Ayesha, and has been one of my long-time series favorites as well. In my heart, this won the Ayesha bowl over the evil flower...

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg - Chant This Charm
Yakuza 0 - Two Dragons
Popn Music 18 - Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite

MATCH 1

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting might be growing on me a bit, but overall, I'd still say I have an unfavorable reaction to how this song sounds. I'm just not really a fan of the odd, dissonant melody in this song. If I listen enough, I start to think "okay, maybe this is a little cool" but I don't think I could shake the feeling that it's not my thing. I definitely prefer the other EXA_PICO songs in the contest over this one.

Chant This Charm is so bright and cheery, it's so good! I especially love 0:24-0:47 because the guitar backing's prominent there and it's a very nice chord progression. In particular, I really like those first two chords (Db major-Bb minor I think?). It's a little amusing since that's just I-vi, which I'm sure is ridiculously common, but has a nice sound to it here! Nice fluid movement between the two chords with the vi chord adding this hint of "sadness" for lack of a better word to it. Simple but good! I also like when the guitar just goes off and does its own thing like at 0:34. This song all throughout is just a great example of multiple different instruments playing different stuff coming together very well. Like some of the comments suggest, it sounds like an older anime OP or a Saturday morning cartoon theme song from your childhood and I like that vibe a lot!

MATCH 2

I usually enjoy the harsh, edgy sound that comes from Yakuza songs like Two Dragons. Not much to say about this. It's cool and appealing to me :)

I feel kinda bad that I consistently have negative things to say about all these Kirby songs. Anyway, the sitar melody's nice, though I prefer when the flute's playing it like at 0:31. The really negative things about this song are parts like 0:22-0:31 and 0:49-0:58. Dissonant melodies and chords and they also sound all detuned to me, further adding to that kind of sound that in this case is just pretty much at odds with my tastes. Parts like the flute melody I mentioned is more what I want to hear from Kirby music with its fun, playful sound.

MATCH 3

Kurokami's a super cool song! I really like the choir, strings, and all that coming together in the intro. Then you have the vocals, which are very nice. Really good melody there. The change from strings and vocals in the background to guitar riffs is pretty cool as well. I also like the softer vocal harmonizing from 0:56-1:09.

I feel like I didn't give Yesterday's Opponents enough credit last year. The intro's still kinda meh, but the rest of the song's a strong example of playful Atelier melodies. The main part exemplifying this being 0:24-0:48 and wherever that melody shows up again. I love those parts of the song!

Very strong match that's pretty close, but sadly, I gotta give it to Kurokami here.

first match the orica song is pretty fascinating, those mysterious bells, the atmosphere environment this song compels is real interesting in the variety of instruments and robo sounds. where are we. a shame about the vocals though. still this song manages to catch my interest more than the song of yesterday (and by that I don't mean the song today with yesterday in the title no I mean the song from this sort of game "gust" i think is what the jolly fellows call it) it is interesting there is a good amount of interest and when the mysterious atmosphere penetrates the girls who refuse to be quiet there is good to be found. meanwhile chant this charm in comparison ima be honest I don't really feel any positive emotion at all that's not good. closest you can get is "nostalgia" especially since dumb kid me would often leave games running on the menu and the tv on and thus tv menus would play and so I've heard this title song more times than I probably would want to which is to say more than once she sings i don't like but really those times would be back ground noise where I'd be busy doing something else and not really listening or caring I don't know how many times I actually left this game on but I do know when I would record video game play onto vhs tapes I recorded some footage of this game and then forgot to hit stop so like a whole 2nd half of this tape had the menu of this game playing over and over which includes this song I believe oh no I lost that video tape for about a decade and then I randomly found it again I never beat billy hatcher I got to like the last world and then there was a weird jump I couldn't make so I never beat it. about a week ago my family ordered a bunch of little chickens and they arrived there's 15 of them they are cute! there is one that is a "polish" breed right now it looks like it has a weird afro-like hairdo also it's eyes are very cartoony looking like that sideways D we're calling her Doodle it was my sister's idea anyway I don't have much to actually say about this song it has singing and then it also has kids singing and also it doesn't have appeal oh no.

two dragons hot take dragons are overrated especially if they are humans as this video seems to imply I click on the video it says "two dragons" I see two people ew. electric guitar for a harsh atmosphere its cool i can dig it man. but I crave for more this song feels too chill in this harsh atmosphere what an oxymoron. oh and it gets somewhere again its ok. like like like this song i it's okay but really theres not a lot about it that speaks to me some of the harsh bass sounds are good but then the high strings cancel out my "high" from that go away. I already know mysterious trap is like at least 1 tier of liking songs above this sort of thing. actually no I don't actually know that haha. the sorts of sort of uhhh european heritage feeling is not really a thing I look for hears songs. I seem to recall a certain toxitricity once gave an off comment that this song uses micro tones I think that's what they're called that sounds fascinating I have no idea if that actually improves it's listening ability for myself the part at :49 is so good it's worth voting for for that part really problem solved just like problem solverzzzz

"oh boy pop'n music I think I've heard some good stuff from this series before cmon show me the goods oh no this song starts off with a church chorus and it's also got a girl singing oh nooooooo. okay there's a fun rhythm. just the one. nah there's a couple. like 1:41 fun buuuut that doe s not overcome the hurdle of vocal girl that makes me want to not be listening. that's a bad feeling for a song. i have stayed up too late don't ask so this write up post may be a tad bit silly I apologize for nothing it's good enough. yoatti is the kind of song that feels good but i don't want to listen to it a lot I guess some thing like that i don't know how to explain these feelings this feels like a song that should win a couple rounds but not a lot but I am not the only voter in these here parts there's good in this song like :17 is real nice but also that instrument at :28 I don't think I can stand that instrument right now. song is solid right now in any case it's not on my nerves (yet) any ways this match really aint close one of these songs inhibits behavior I find unfortunate and the other one is good enough so it is good enough in summation I'm done with this post in this essay i will

fourth match

Popn Music 18 - Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite

Eh, PAJA might be my least favorite Aurica hymnn but whatever it's still good. Also man did Kurokami really not retire until VGMC9 or later? I feel like it first popped up in like VGMC5 or 6 and I loved it back then.

Chant This Charm
Two Dragons
Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients

EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting. vs Chant This Charm: Some good Ar stuff today. The xylophone on this track really makes it and I wish there was more of it instead of these vocals. I could see myself really enjoying this song a lot more of those vocals just weren't there. Oh and also 3:40 is cool as well. Chant This Charm is probably one of the most infectiously happy songs I've ever heard. Puts a smile on my face every time I listen to it. Can't get much better than this.

Two Dragons vs Mysterious Trap: Two Dragons is suffering from Blooming Villain Syndrome where both songs have this really cool feel to them but do nothing with that vibe. The violins popping up around 1:30 is a nice touch but it doesn't help improve the song much. It starts exploding around 3:15 and gets really good but by then its already too late for this song to redeem itself. Mysterious Trap is kinda cool. Its got a bit of a funky vibe to it that I like. Its nothing spectacular but it doesn't have to be. Both songs in this match up are pretty average but I guess I gotta give it to Two Dragons even though I don't like it that much. Mysterious Trap is just too short and Two Dragons at least does something, even if that something is pretty mediocre.

Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite vs Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients: Originally thought that Kurokami was gonna fall flat after the first few seconds but it managed to do alright. Not a fan of it still but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There are some cool guitars and the occasional vocals are pretty good, but these all go on so much it starts to get annoying. Yesterday's Opponents has always been one of the big Atelier song names I've always seen thrown around and I guess it lives up to the hype a bit. Its a pretty solid track, nothing in it that I really dislike but I'm not blown away by it either. Feel like this track is more of a Blooming Villain Syndrome recovery if anything. Same vibe on both Blooming and Yesterday but Yesterday manages to do something with it.

Kirby Triple Deluxe - Mysterious Trap
Popn Music 18 - Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite

Match 1: We're back to the style of Ar Tonelico songs that I really like. is also a pretty surprisingly solid song despite being overly happy, cool match.

Match 2: I'm getting some strong Ace Combat vibes from Two Dragons. It starts out kinda slow, but gets pretty good towards the end. Very interesting instrumentation on Mysterious Trap, I like it!

ToC: KMStN is very possibly my favorite rhythm game song ever (although Byakuya Gentou and Quantum Sea Lindwurm are also very strong contenders for the title). YOaTI I feel like I like just because I've heard it so many times on VGMC.

Who the hell nominated Chant This Charm? Billy Hatcher has a ton of good BGM, almost every song in the game. Great stereotypical 3D platformer music with varied and interesting instrumentation for the different world themes. But this song is not that. This is not at all representative of the overall quality of the rest of the soundtrack.

I love the Kirby Triple Deluxe soundtrack, but this is one of the less spectacular songs. If you ask me to think of a random KTD song at any given point, this would never be the song that I think of. It's alright but I don't really like like it. Two Dragons is also kind of like that though. It's a style of music that I generally like more than I dislike, but this song doesn't feel like anything. I'm sure it's fine in the context of the game but it doesn't make me actively want to vote for it over another song.

Kurokami Midareshi Shura to Narite is like Two Dragons if I didn't forget that I was listening to it halfway through. Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients doesn't sound like I would expect to come from a game that looks like that.
