Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Battle YAS 2
Skyclad Observer

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche (7.5) / Running Hell (6.0)
Battle YAS 2 (7.5) / Time for a Great Turnabout (6.5)

Where did DGS' pursuit theme end up in my AA series music rankings again? #30? I don't think I'd rank it that high anymore, but 6.5 is still "good" in my grading scale! I feel like I "should" like Last Surprise more, but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Skyclad Observer more, so it gets my vote.

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Time for a Great Turnabout!
OPEN THE EYES

Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica - Rustling Throb ~ Cloche at 8.9 is my 2nd favorite Gust discovery in the contest!! I still need to figure out this contest's hymmnos ranking. This is third, I guess. All of the good things about other hymmnos apply to this one. Simple but powerful.

Cave Story+ - Running Hell at 8.1 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! I like the calmer, more introspective Cave Story songs over things like this. It's decent, just unremarkable, aside from the "chorus" which can't carry it.

YAS - Battle YAS 2 at 7.3 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! I strongly dislike the intro. It feels cliched, somehow. I don't know. It bothers me a little less when it's properly integrated into the song. I don't know. I really don't like that melody. At like 1:40 when the song starts to do other things it becomes better, although what it does isn't really to my taste, so it ascends above "dislike" to "indifference". I don't know. I'm being really harsh on this and I DON'T KNOW WHY. Orochi Battle kind of bugs me in the same way too, to a less great extent.

Dai Gyakuten Saiban - Time for a Great Turnabout at 7.7 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! I don't care about this song at all. I have it saved because I cared just enough to grab it in a batch of other things, and I enjoy it, I guess. It's almost elevator noise to me somehow. Not really in love with the melody in this one, or the instruments. Give me like 80% of other AA songs over this.

There is a big gap between these two songs. Imagine using reasonable scoring systems

Steins;Gate - Skyclad Observer at is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! Welcome to the VGM Bathroom's second guessing game! Please applaud your gracious hosts: Coolnez, Deogenerate, NFUN and Place. Rustling Throb Cloche
Battle YAS 2
Last Surprise

First thing's first, in case you're curious: "Rustling Throb" is, like all of AT2, horribly translated. The "throb" here is a pulse; that is, a heartbeat. Anywho, this is the dungeon music in the final dungeon of Phase 2 (of 5) in Cloche's route, where you're journeying to where Cloche has bottled up her heart because Stuff Happened Repeatedly and you're trying to get her to open up, which is the battle where EXEC_SPHILIA/. plays because AR TONELICO 2 does not stop having good music ever. Anyways if I broke this into paragraphs we'd be a paragraph in and I haven't even talked about the song yet ummm so let's start with the intro, seems appropriate. That heartbeat, that tension, perfectly sets the stage, and then it breaks into awesome chanting with the little deep-doops that keep a constant pulse through the song (hi again song title), but then we get into cool piano stuff and then the baseline does its little doody into these epic chords and it's so good! Then we get to 1:15 and the piano is replaced with chanting it's just so mystical and cool and I could say more but we got five other tracks to listen to today so.

well i definitely feel like I'm running from something you got that right. It's actually a pretty good piece especially once it gets into the main melody at :20 and again around :50 or so but you're literally up against one of my favorite tracks of all time so rip.

HI YAS i've played a lot of you but I somehow never noticed the scales in the background until just now somehow??? anywho I think I like other battle music from the game more but I like how slidy the melody is here. Or legato I guess if I have to use actual words but "legato" doesn't feel right I dunno. Also now the scales are almost obnoxious how did I never really notice them before. Stuff at 1:45 is weirdly creepy which is actually SUPER appropriate for the game which is uhhhhhh man lemme tell you there is a plot twist that I 0% saw coming but that riff super makes me think of it. I should get back to that game at some point and then translate it because I don't have enough projects yet apparently

DGS I love you and the music is super late Meiji/Taishou era Japan which is really cool, but this just doesn't hit the mark. There's a couple of the themes I associate with Holmes that I might support more, but~

Oh hey I was just playing Robotics;Notes DaSH before coming in here to listen to everything to vote. Steins;Gate is kinda sorta straight-up the best game in the series, and this song... has nothing to do with that. I think I liked this more previously but it feels kind of generic nowadays I dunno.

Last Surprise is fun. I really don't have any other way to describe it besides that. I prefer a number of other P5 tracks to it but yeah. I was going to be more negative here and then I was like "why am I being negative this track is *fun* just have fun dowolf" and then I went "you know, that dowolf fella has a good point there." and then I clicked post message

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Battle YAS 2
Skyclad Observer

Don't really get why Rustling Throb of all songs keeps getting in, but okay. It's still good, at least. Better than the extremely okay Running Hell.

YAS's intro sucks real bad. The rest of the song is kinda okay. TGT (can't say the full acronym...) annoys me more though. Would probably pick both songs in the first match here.

SCO's pretty alright. Didn't deserve to retire, but it's generally enjoyable. Wish Life Will Change was here instead of Last Surprise (and it would've been, with better seeding!), but so it goes. I don't like the start of Last Surprise at all, though it gets better after that.

Running Hell
Battle YAS 2

Cloche has some cool mechanical stuff going on and the vocals aren't totally focused on for the most part unlike other songs which is good because I don't like them. So while the vocals bring it down a bit, the song certainly has potential, but it doesn't ever really go anywhere strong, and is instead maybe a bit repetitive. The piano playing with loud & quiet at 1:04 is cool but again, it barely does anything with that. Other song -- Cave Story +? I was surprised to see someone go with this version instead of the original in nominations, and I still am. In a case like this it really feels like the right move is to go for the original, considering the "update" to the song doesn't really remix it in any way, and any "improvements" are too subtle and subjective that many people will probably be more likely to want to go for the original for nostalgia or other reasons, especially with how strong it is. And then of course there's the sad story of rights involved behind the making of CS+ and what not. But, here we are, with CS+ Running Hell in the contest. Ah I'm one to talk though I'd absolutely prefer S3&K PC versions of sonic 3 and or knuckles' songs even with most of the nonexclusives but I digress. This here still a good tension song. The section at :46 is very nice & makes good use of the potential of the song unlike opponent managed to do for me.

Wild that Battle YAS 2 is right next to CS+ Running Hell in the bracket even if separated by a single match round. BYA'S 2 has a very indie retro beepy sound to it but these sorts of beeps are a bit generic and unappealing to me, but still more appealing than realistic orchestral stuff. Like TurnabouTime song has an instrumentation I'm less into especially the high strings but it has some cool tunes about it like the little rhythm at :57. This match is actually really close for me! BYAS2is kind of dull at times but does also have moments I can get into. The same can kind of apply to Turnabout Time Too but I feel like the lows & highs are both just sliiightly higher than in BYAS2 but, the instrumentation difference equals them out! oh no! Aah, I think ultimately though when I think of the two songs I'd rather listen to BYAS2 so there's my vote.

Toc match if we had only one tie and none of that test the flaming bonds over and over then the day this match would've happened would have had 5 vocal songs and then also the one song I got in the contest wow anyway I don't really feel like listening to these so because it's the toc I will abstain once again.

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Time for a Great Turnabout
Skyclad Observer

cloche is fine but also i come out of it feeling pretty neutral on it. still an easy decision over running hell which is a very not-a-kind-of-thing-i've-cared-about-for-the-last-decade kind of thing

more fakebit. even more turned off on it than running hell right now even though i acknowledge it as an acceptable battle theme. feel free to copypaste my cloche writeup for the dgs song, secretly this match is just the same as the first one. another straightforward day, not very big on any of these late b songs

Running Hell
Battle YAS 2
Skyclad Observer

Aww, do I really have to listen to Cloche again? I already know I don't like it and I was the one who first nominated its opponent! ...Actually this isn't bad. Not good enough to vote for against Running Hell, but a lot better than the EXEC_WHATEVER shit that I remember. Also, it has the generosity to be relatively short.

Running Hell is a banger! I've never actually played Cave Story, but this song is a popular choice to get used in romhacks; I think my first experience with it was the constantly-speeding-up version from A Super Mario Thing. Crazy good song though.

Holy shit this is some good stuff. I wasn't expecting much from it given the minimalistic title and graphic. But this is some epic 90s nostalgia even though I highly doubt it's actually from the 90s.

So when I finally checked this song out in the nomination topic, I was like "yeah, sounds good, I'll support it". Then I counted and found that the post in which I'd first noticed it brought it to 5 pre-lockdown, so it was in without my support. Just keep that in mind; this was a song I was willing to spend one of my supports on. *wink*

"Last Surprise" indeed! Yeah I'm not even going to talk about Skyclad Observer. It's great, end of story. But when I saw P5 in here, after deciding that I actually liked the Arse Tonelico song for once, I figured "oh lol I'm going to put a ToC song in sixth". Not even close! This was insanely good, easily could've gotten my vote over a lot of things.

Battle YAS 2 > Skyclad Observer > Running Hell > Last Surprise > Rustling Throb ~ Cloche > Time for a Great Turnabout

I told you to keep it in mind that T4aGT was a song that, despite having never heard until it was already safely into the bracket, I was willing to spend one of my own supports on until I realized it needed no further supports. My last place song on the day. And we're already all but guaranteed a retiree worse than any of the songs on the day! I think the only way we don't get a song worse retiring would be if Snake Eater loses next round, then wins the A4 wild card and wins two matches, while Flightless wins the A3 Wild Card and wins two matches. That's it. Two fucking songs on the entire right side of Bracket A that I'd vote for over my last-place song on the day.

Fuck Bracket A so hard. Festering shitfest. Also, lol at me having to use a 4 in place of the word "for" because the acronym formed by rendering it properly is outright not allowed to be posted. Their automod must be a real riot in Britain.

Hearts Aflutter ~Chroche~ (70th) vs Running Hell (Famitracks) (156th)
Battle YAS 2 (131st) vs Pursuit ~ Time for a Great Turnabout (56th)
Skyclad Observer [13th] vs Last Surprise [39th]

Is it a hymn? Is it an instrumental track? No, it's Rustling Hearts Fluttering Throb Chlorophyll!! This weird kind of blend of the two rather distinct "styles" of songs in the Ar games is something that I super, SUPER appreciate exists lol. But I feel like it's weaker than other songs in both of these categories. It doesn't EXPLODE with just Tonelico goodness until the chrous hits at 1:15 at which point it gets reeeeeally good, and the transition at 1:45 is SO GOOD WTF but yeah it's very, very good, but I always wish it was better when I listen. Love that piano. Cave Story - Running Hell (FamiTracker 2A03 Cover) really opened my eyes to realize how much the sound design and Organya sound contributes to me liking this song because this version is BLAND as hell. 0:22 is normally my favorite part of the song but here I just go "oh. okay blip blip blip blip nes makes notes okay" it's still good but its not great and could be in any late NES game for all I would know if I didn't know. Kinda disappointing but at least the melody is classic.

Okay I'm pretty sure I WAY underrated Battle YAS 2 in my rankings, I like this for a lot of the reasons I like Running Hell (the original) with it's cool Retraux But Which Console??? What Is Making The Noise?!?! (i actually cant really tell lolol it might not actually be anything authentic actually it probably isn't but oh WELL I DONT CARE) ) Even taking into account an upgrade in rank... I love DGS Pursuit way too much lol. Has a perfect blend of Old Japan and also Old Britian and also Phoenix Wright and idk honestly I can't really think of much to say except its just GOOD it really gets the blood pumping like you're chasing after the bad guy on a moped and he's right in front of you and youre HOT ON THE TAIL YOU HAVE IT JUST A BIT MORE GOOOOOOOOOOO so good

Skyclad Observer is super nostalgic for me cause listening to this song forever again is what got me into VN OSTs in general, and made me watch the Steins;Gate anime which was really, really good. (I gotta rewatch it though) Last Surprise I voted for against Confronting Myself in VGMC12 and that's the second highest thing I regret doing in VGMC behind not voting the day of Flash Frost vs Scars of FAUNA lol

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Time for a Great Turnabout
Last Surprise

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche is my 11th favorite in the contest! this is possibly my favorite at2 song. I remember when i first got into Ar Tonelico II music I had a very GAMEBOP-adjacent taste compared to now and could not stand vocals at all. This was the first Ar tonelico series song with vocals I remember liking at all (actually might've been A Strange Play ~ The First but what ever), prior to it i just listened to all the instrumental ones. maybe that isn't surprising because this is "basically an instrumental one" and the vocals aren't the focus but it marks a transition for me i guess. It immediately piqued my interest because of the very distinct sounding electronic drums layers and marimba (and other similar glassy tuned perc layers) dominance. The artificial sounding piano THING at :30 still remains one of my favorite parts of this, and the normal more real sounding piano is beautiful too. Perfect synthesis of contrasting organic and artificial in one place. Whole thing is pretty grandiose and shiny! It's a really crystalline Mystic Ancient Ruins aesthetic evoked and that is one of my favorite things. Nowadays i actually actively like the vocal layers rather than trying to ignore them, though they're not centric to my enjoyment of the track the way they are in some other ar tonelico stuff, they're just a thing I think is cool and amplifies my enjoyment (them coming in at 1:15 is a wonderful climax of intensity to this). To this day though, I've found very little that impresses me production-wise as much as this soundtrack and this is just one of many examples, wonderful sounds/electronic effects all around.

Running Hell is my 176th favorite in the contest! i've realized as time has gone on two things: 1) I like cave story music less than I used to, 2) so much of what I like about cave story music is dependent on it having the original instrumentation. the custom ORG fake soundchip is just a way more appealing limitation set to my ears than nes 2a03+vrc6. I don't dislike rushjet i think he's good at arrangements but i'd be SLiiightly more nice to the original version of this. but also this song is literally just not something I have anything positive to say about it feels too much like the skeleton boomerang one yesterday except i don't even like the instrumentation. can't take any drama the track presents seriously because it is too oom-pah carnival beat and tonally it's just really cheesy. lots of music from this game i think is awesome but not this one

Gestation (First Cave) next year?! : (

||||||||||||||||||||||||

Battle YAS 2 is my 133rd favorite in the contest! This blasts you right off the bat with some pretty distinct chord changes that are to my liking, the startling shift to a chord with the bass resting 1 semitone above the tonic at :10/:23 is one of the easiest ways to emotionally PUNCH me in the best way with music. also just love the soaring melody it starts off with and the arps too. in general love the first 25 seconds but then after that it starts to sound like "anime song but with the vocal track replaced with an unexpressive beep that it wasn't meant to be heard on" or something and i'm not fond of most of :25-1:13 or the parts like it, i don't hate them but my interest isn't kept even close to the rest of the song. The dissonant section at 1:37-1:55 is pretty fun, at first i thought i didn't like how empty it was but what it builds to from that initial emptiness is really cool and it turns out to be a welcome quirky dark TENSE break.

Time for a Great Turnabout is my 119th favorite in the contest! love this accordion+strings/brass instrumentation a ton, subtle grace notes/etc really make the accordion part come alive. rhythms are bouncy and fun with lots of groups of 3 16th beats. cool harmonies in each chord. there's some parts that are more stereotypically "classical music that makes the end of a phrase clear with hamfisted tension/resolution that's too 'predictable' for me" that i do NOT like. but honestly other than that this almost sounds like PMD? unexpected chord change at 1:02 is WHOAA and the section right after's progression is really REALLY appealing to me (but then at 1:18 it starts to sound too "cheesy rich people mansion in 1900 music" and iu dion't like it any more because it sounds like real music). mixed reaction but the good parts are REALLY GOOD

I don't remember liking Time for a GReat Turnabout this much even though I ranked it over YAS. Very close match. Two tracks that contain both elements I love and dont. could flip, expected to be voting for YAS initially

||||||||||||||||||||||||

Skyclad Observer is my 34th favorite ToC entrant! I have heard this too many times because of the one thing. I have a hard time judging this fairly because I have heard it too many times... I do like it but it's become like Super Mario Bros Ground Theme-Tier "how do i rate something that i have heard 5000 times". I always liked the heavily-produced nature of it and that it's dramatic at least. Cool sounds throughout. I love reversed piano!

Last Surprise is my 6th favorite ToC entrant! The popularity of this track always surprised me but I welcome it, maybe my favorite persona series track? The backing epiano chords are ridiculously trippy from :16-:44 and are what makes this for me. The funky bass part being so prominent is a big factor in my enjoyment too. Everything about this is simultaneously super musically interesting and super fun to listen to! This has grown on me significantly between when it was actually in vgmc and now.

Match 1: Rustling Throb is pleasant, but it lacks the sheer oomph and power of the big hymnos songs, overall it's okay. Running Hell is a fun chiptune. I've mentioned it before, but it's surprising that for how good the Cave Story soundtrack is, we get so few entries from it in VGMC.

Match 2: I still haven't the slighest clue what YAS is, and that basic thumbnail is giving me no hints, but this song is very solid. Ace Attorney music is, as usual, pretty good. This sounds a lot better than the crispy DS soundfont songs we usually get. Pretty close match here.

ToC: Most of my enjoyment of Last Surprise comes from ironic meme factor, or to be more specific, that one custom stage in SSBU with the giant scoop . SCO is legitimately great though, so easy match.

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche
Time for a Great Turnabout
Skyclad Observer

Rustling Throb ~ Cloche vs Running Hell: Rustling Throb doesn't feel like the usual Ar songs that have been in this contest so far. Its got this pretty spiritual vibe to it that I like. My only problem here is that it really doesn't do anything with that vibe. This track has a lot of potential if only it was a bit longer and maybe cut the vocals. Not actually sure how I feel about the vocals this time around to be honest. On one hand they're cool but on the other they feel out of place. It really do be like that sometimes. Running Hell is alright. It suffers in the same way as Rustling Throb with both songs feeling very short, but while Rustling Throb does some cool stuff Running Hell doesn't.

Battle 2 vs Time for a Great Turnabout: YAAAAAAAAAAAS WE FINALLY GOT YAS. The jokes a bit overused but I am excited to see YAS here. Battle 2 is a super good track. Its fun, its catchy, and it really pumps me up. I prefer Orochi Battle to this but both are still very good. Sadly, I don't think I can vote for it. It can't compete with Great Turnabout at all. Great Turnabout never gets old and that part at 1:20 MMMMMMMMMM thats good stuff. This is such a painful match.

Skyclad Observer vs Last Surprise: Skyclad Observer is very cool. The vocals really make this track shine, while everything else is alright. The beeping noise that keeps going in the background is a nice touch as well, and the guitar that pops up towards the middle. The futuristic vibe on it is also really good. Last Surprise is the weakest vocal song in Persona 5 for me, so its a hard pass here. While all the other vocal tracks in Persona 5 are pretty good, Last Surprise is just too cheesy for me to listen to. The vocals completely ruin the song.

Throb is an icky word that makes me think of veins and heart surgery and Edgar Allan Poe ugh
Turnabout sounds like Radiant Historia except I don't like it at all, it's just exceptionally dull
