I've never really had time to do write-ups for all the music competing in this, but I've decided it's nice to at least say something about my favorite music each day! (besides the ToC competitors...I will be doing write-ups on those in my ranking topic) Partizans is probably the best example of bittersweet/happy/feelgood music that I've come across this contest so far. The intro is probably my favorite part of it all. Love the big chords and the sparkling effects (including their polyrhythms). That synth melody at 0:14 is simply GORGEOUS!!! Gets a bit more upbeat, then transitions into another emotional section....ah, feels so happy and hopeful! Nice blend of piano and bells in various parts, too. Love the harmony moving things forward at 1:36. Gorgeous chords right after that. My favorite synth at 1:49 again, YESSSSS!!!!

Wow, this is nice. Never did get the original PMD, though I loved the second one. It always goes this way, doesn't it? I'm one of the few advocates of Touhou music on this board and half the time it ends up with a first-round opponent that even I'd have trouble voting for it against. Though why does this song have to be 7:11? I really feel like it's been repeating for quite some time and I've still got about 3 minutes left. I know the convention for Touhou song uploads is also to loop them twice, but this feels like it's looped even more than that!

I mean, I guess I applaud the effort, but I only resolved to nominate more of the PC-98 stuff because other genuine PC-98 songs were doing well last year. This board loves its nostalgia, even if it's not anything they've actually played.

Sky Tower vs Faint Dream ~ Inanimate Dream: They did a good job with this new version of Sky Tower. Its not better than the original, but instead they're both just as good. That in itself is a pretty good thing. Faint Dream is one of the best PC-98 touhou songs hands down. Parts like 0:42 are absolutely golden to me. Only complaint is that it feels a bit short at times but its all good.

ElectriCITY vs Partizans: whoops i forgot what i put for this match up on my bracket so this may be a reversal. ElectriCITY has that nice futuristic city vibe going for it that i like a lot. Makes me think of skyscrapers oddly enough, which i guess fits with the game. The flute instrument is also nice. Partizans is a cool song as well. Its pretty chill. Both songs today are just alright but I guess I'll be going with Partizans. The chill vibe on that track was just too good.

Luna Ascension EX vs Endless Nine: Good tower of heaven song. Thought this was originally a normal version at first but then the new stuff comes in and im like YOOOOOOOOO. Pretty good stuff here. Endless Nine is a fun umineko track. Not one of my favorites from the ost but its still pretty good regardless. The little announcement thing that happens every now and then during the song is always a cool part that i like. Not surprisingly, this song is a 9/10.

This new Sky Tower is better than the old one. I still wish Sky Tower would stop getting into contests. Early Touhou music is no better ugh.

ElectriCITY has a real great start. I'm not as enthralled by the rest. Not enthralled by Partizans at all though.

Think this is the worst ToC match yet. I don't care for either of these. E9 is more just bad for an Umineko song than actually bad at least.

Wow, not that it matters but I vastly prefer this version of the song over the nominated one and would easily vote it over Sky Tower. I like Sky Tower (came close to supporting it once or twice), but this would be the best song of the night.

sky tower is a very sky tower song honestly i don't like it as much as the original though... but it is still sky tower so. you know. it's catchy and alright.
inanimate dream is a good example of good classic 2hu music. i happen to like that kind of stuff even more than you'd think. only weak point with it is a somewhat unremarkable loop, besides that i still dig this a lot

truth be told i never played a sims or simcity game myself, but something like this is still deeply nostalgic to me I suppose largely because of the other games similar to it that i played at the time (eg. rct3), even if they didn't have the same composers. it's good.
by contrast, even though i do have a reasonable amount of familiarity with the particular composer of the opoona song, the games I've played that he's done are all not this style. Rather than Opoona, the 2007 basiscape-composed game I played was GrimGrimoire. Which i don't regret, mind you, GrimGrimoire's easily one of my favourite games. Point is though, it's a style I never really experienced outside of vgm and that's interesting to me.

when this version of luna ascension managed to retire the ost wasn't even out and it only formally got a name a little after the contest ended lol, and that was before any other rivals song did too i think. i feel like it's kind of bad this one did what it managed to do with a very unexpected cinderella run i never saw coming, since it just kind of cemented a status for rivals over every other flashygoodness soundtrack when i consider it probably their weakest one overall. at the time i nominated it, there weren't very many songs uploaded, but it was the only one i would've ever considered for the contest, and even then i was also on the fence about it vs the Super Smash Land version https://flashygoodness.bandcamp.com/track/tower-of-heaven-luna-ascension-gb-mix and actually the main reason i only really went with it was because i thought it would benefit from the extreme Undertale presence that contest combined with recency bias which i guess worked out. either way, it's one of the definitive flashygoodness songs to me whatever iteration it's in.
dammit dowolf stealing the joke i wanted to do. anyway endless 9 is... ok. it's not bad but i can think of a surprising number of other umineko songs (and not just dai songs) that give off the same general impression to me that I just like more. sunshine -destructive- it is not (vgmcx luna ascension match reference)

Sky Tower is my 73rd favorite in the contest! A long time ago i made a fairly embarrassing writeup for this that described that intro ostinato as "alternating 7/8 and 9/8" even though it's literally just a common 7+9 4/4 rhythm lol. To be fair I still feel this track really heavily that way. I feel the start/end of each bar during the parts that have that layer as if it's alternating 7/8 and 9/8 every bar rather than just anticipation rhythm/syncopation, honestly even when it's not playing the ostinato I still feel that really stark division over it. It's just so...idk, something about that ostinato draws me in as simple as it is, and makes the pattern it presents very stark with these rigid boundaries at those rhythmic positions in feeling to me. Wish it was louder in the mix at places like 3:30 and stuff. Fairly neat chord progression (though far from the coolest this series has to offer) and the melody does a neat job winding its way around it to highlight the coolest changes in 'which notes sound good with the chord' yeah(well basically it's just DORIAN MODE so that makes it DESTINY like big climactic sky tower climbing..up it..pokemon CLIMBactic ha ha). It's not like that unique but it's always one that lifts me up. always loved PMD series music to an extreme and to this day multiple soundtracks from it remain near the top of my favorite game soundtracks ever of every soundtrack ever (though the first not as much as 2 or gates to infinity). This isn't really like the best example of what I like about this series' music, but I still think it's very pretty and fun! new arrangement doesn't really improved/detract much for me, maybe slight preference for the original

Faint Dream ~ Inanimate Dream is my 185th favorite in the contest! despite how "it all sounds the same" touhou music is, my reaction ranges from strong dislike to stuff I love, pretty evenly distributed. It not a style I automatically love or hate, but the details can make or break it for me, zun's attracted to both some of my favorite and least favorite subtle compositional stuff and which sets of things he's pulling from determine where I'll rank stuff. a shame I'm such a fm synth guy because i feel like the pc98 touhou music almost never interests me as much compositionally as 6+ do, when stuff stopped being pc98. This is an example of that i guess, I don't /really/ hate it despite how low i ranked it, melodic line's ok and it's kinda dramatic which i like. I like the constant 16th stuff in the tonal layers driving it. Some pretty random feeling changes in tonal center that aren't led up to at all and I like that. I'm not a fan of these types of overly fast metal drums though outside specific circumstances, that's the main thing knocking this down low. The harsh-ish fm (despite me normally liking harsh fm specifically), density and hecticness of this just makes it really uncomfortable/stressful to listen to to me, more than the average touhou track for some reason, despite the elements I like

ElectriCITY is my 122nd favorite in the contest! man all these "i probably would've loved this 10 years ago" songs in the contest, this, somnom, the escape goat one. I was so attracted to constant 16ths synth stuff, delay echoes and these hypnotic electronic landscapes, stuff reminiscent of tracker demoscene stuff, etc. I like this much more than the things I compared it to though, I'd say I actively like it now. Sitar is a cool instrument in here, whole thing is hypnotic and flows in a pretty cool way. oh my god the delay echo'd weird flute a 2:23 is so extremely my thing. Pretty chill and I "like the atmosphere" of it but there's not much of interest to me compositionally, just think it has cool sounds

Partizans is my 23rd favorite in the contest! Honestly might even like it more than thatALWAYS A PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO A BASISCAPE ORIGINAL SOUND TRACkHitoshi Sakamoto, Noriyuki Kamikura. I'm pretty sure that on this specific ost that the tracks like this that are credited like "Composed: Sakimoto, Arranged: Kamikura" imply that the arranger basically wrote the whole thing but is using motifs written by the person listed as composer, just based on style-awareness. Anyways regardless of whether this is actually "mostly kamikura" or "mostly sakimoto" it starts right off the bat exemplifying the Opoona sound (and "basiscape when they're electronic" 'sound' as well). THE ALBUM ART FOR THIS GAME IS TOO BRIGHT. I love the (3+3+3) 9/16 against 4/4 polymeter for the first 30 seconds...wow!~ It's just like Confronting Myself and Imbrium's variants of polymeter!!! Also cool that the 4/4 layer is kinda subdued until more time goes on, easing you into the more conventional pulse from the more spacey loose one. It makes for a really strong pay off at :30 when suddenly everything IS synchronized and fairly straightforward musically actually. That contrast between chill floating in space ambiguity and "this sounds like intense fake orchestra music in a medieval CASTLE" is something I see as pretty strong about this. Every individual chord and chord change is so cool. Opoona reminds me of Klonoa music, it's like if you combined Klonoa music with...like a really laid back Mushihimesama...or something. PAT METHENY GROUP PORTAMENTO SQUARE WAVE SYNTH LAYERED ON TOP OF THE EVERYTHING(rip lyle mays). O O O O the chord change at 3:44 is so EXPLOSIVE. AAAHHHHHH. Right before 3:58 I expect a low quality voice to peek in and say "V" for a split second I LOVE BASISCAPE I CAME UP WITH THE "BASISCAPE" OPTION IN THE POLL

Luna Ascension EX is my 19th favorite ToC entrant! Flashygoodness is fun! Their sense of melody's addictive, fun pitch bendyness, very "expressive". Fun fake chippyness, and this feels full and cool despite most of the instrument sources being very simple fake chip stuff or common things. I find it hard to say much about this...don't dislike almost anything about it and I think it's exciting and the type of catchy I like!

Endless Nine is my 12th favorite ToC entrant! Endless Nine is actually my 9th favorite Umineko ep1-4 track! (I thought it was going to wind up 9th in my ToC ranking too which would've been funny but enough other things slipped just barely above it last minute). I wouldn't imagine people expect me to say that if they don't already know that because I'm pretty vocally averse to dai's portion of the ost, but Endless Nine's a major exception where I'm a big fan. Sky tower to me feels like an alright song that I don't entirely understand why people single it out over the rest in a soundtrack. Maybe it has to do with the way it's like a slow + emotional + "hopeful" piece = those things don't typically work for me. Your mind games to make me feel relaxed or hopeful will not work! So this is just okay. The mix of realistic instruments with the more beepy artificial stuff is interesting in a decent way. funny clock tower. Meanwhile oh no controvery in the land of Touhou looks like someone submitted a fake version of synthetic music because it was "remastered" in a way that hardly even improves the outcome for me. Nah I prefer the crisp crunchy original style. It's a cool piece I like it Mysterious Battle under the Old Night Sky

Match 2 feels like a frustration of a match because the two pieces kind of appeal/disappeal to the same part of me, two slow-ish (but not truly slow) pieces with nontraditional instrumentations mixing realism with digital slightly, giving atmosphericish vibes. Genuinely it's very hard to decide which one I would rather see advance!! Additionally, both have decently strong starts that later fall into less-good-but-still-fairly-good sections for me. Mm... With ElectriSimCity I do like the way the tune flows starting at 1:10, though various weak points of the song are that some of the more weaker sections kind of drag on for a bit. Partizans does not have this issue, but I'm not as much of a fan of the goofy jester sort of vibe at like :31. Golly, what a close match, the scales sure are balanced here. I do particularly like the section of Partizans at 1:40 as well though, and it Is more concise without winding up dragging on. Yeah, yeah that's what I've decided on.

toc match - huh. I've totally heard a variant of this Rivals of Aether song in my La Mulana Randomizer stuffs but I didn't download anything from the toc for that. Did someone nominate another version of this song? Eh well I like it it's cool even if it tries going for a "hopeful" vibe neat beeps good instrumentation. Endless 9 sounds like a news broadcast oh no breaking news there are 9s for days they just keep on coming. Oh no (actual) this seems to be one of the cases where I pretty distinctly prefer the instrumentation of one song and tune of the other. Okay actually the bit at 1:15 of the endless 9 broadcast is so cool to me it'll get my vote so long as the rest of the song doesn't do something to offend me. Oh no this slow orchestral string moment is trying to. Talkingman doesn't count he's funny and Out Of Focus. But Yeah no yeah this is still a cool piece with a couple of Really great parts meanwhile LAEXOST7 is more just like neat beeps man

Wheeee I love Sky Tower!! I'm actually okay with the DX version getting in this year, unlike past years where updated versions have been just... not as good as the originals (hi In the Final DX) I think Sky Tower DX holds up to the original really well! There as just enough things better and worse that it kinda balances itself out. The only gripe I have that really doesn't balance out is the VVVVVV ting that first shows up at 0:37 is WAY TOO CLEAR AND LOUD and out of place and I don't like it very much.... but yeah the original Sky Tower would likely be around this range as well as far as rating goes. Inanimate Dream is SOOOO GOOD FM CRUNCH FAST TICKATICKATICKATICKATICKA powerful call-and-response type melody at 0:42 it just keeps going and goign and ahujsfshaj i love this songs a lot. Honestly very easy match for me but not one that will crush my dreams if it goes the wrong way! (it will lol) (also tbh i did not know about the akyuu's untouched score thing when suggesting zel use this link instead, but i also do not think it changes the original too much and should not even be considered "ineligible" anyway but thats just my two cents that prob wont matter anyway okay bye 2hu)

ElectriCITY EEEEEELECTRICITY is very cool! Honestly this is one of those songs where even though I don't really "get much" from it content-wise, like I don't really remember it all the well at all and don't really care for specific parts or anything, the sounds that it makes and what I get from it while actually listening to it are just so good that I can't bring myself to give it much lower of a rating than I did. It's very very cool to listen to but so is Partizans, and Partizans actually GOES PLACES with its cool sounds THE INTRO SYNTH AT 0:14 DESCENDS UPON EARTH AND SHOCKS RHYTHM INTO MY SOUL and i am flying through the air to the department store where i will buy cool items to evolve my eevee into the pokemon that i want oh wait espeon does not evolve by stone (unless you are playing xd!!) i love basiscape. i love Noriyuki Kamikura this song is just so crazy good in a feel-good way that not many other songs do for me and yeah i'm a big fan!!! yay opoona!!!!

hello flashygoodness!!! i love your sound so much.,.... honestly i'm very conflicted with Luna Ascension EX because i LOVE the updates to the original that it brings. it sounds so CLEAN and so CRISP but that... kinda goes against why I loved the original?? like maybe not so much luna ascension, if this were indignant divinity here i probably would actually be complaining about being "more crisp" but luna ascension i dont care as much about it??? idk what i'm sayign even i guess i do not want the "REAL SOUNDING INSTRUMENTS" in my tower of heaven like the piano and the drums but even though i do not want them i will accept them because they are still cool. that was just a bad writeup im sORRY I LOVE THIS SONG STILL!!! I do not love Endless Nine though, it sounds like something that is building up to something that I like and then it never does that, it lives its life as an intro to a cool battle song and then the only interesting thing that happens is Microsoft Sam comes to talk to me. Match 1: Ughhh hardest (the best) R1 match here. Overall I will say I like this version of Sky Tower more than the original. The horns sound less powerful in the remaster, but everything else sounds a lot more clean. Sky Tower in any case is honestly great and this should've retired years ago. I actually don't like Faint Dream as much compared to the other PC-98 Touhou final boss themes, but PC-98 Touhou final boss themes is my favorite kind of music so this is still like an 8.5/10. All-inning on the loser of this for the wildcard. I have a deep suspicion the winner of this is going to get anti-voted next round though. Don't take that last comment too much to heart, I'm just being a bitter bellsprout.

Match 2: SimCity music is great, I should've nominated something from this game or SC3KU. Apparently I gave this a 6/10 in RtVGM, might be bumping that up a little bit, this is pretty enjoyable with lots of cool instruments. I kinda just skimmed over a lot of stuff when filling out my faves bracket figuring I'd do full listens when the contest came around, so I glossed over Partizans without giving it a fair shot and picked the other song (whoops), but this is actually really good. I remember hearing this one before, can't remember if this was in VGMC or not. The Opoona soundtrack is something I should look into more deeply, since I also really liked that other song from this game I used in my last guessing game.

ToC: Luna Ascension isn't Fight or Flight or Full Steam VENGEANCE, but it's a solid 3rd best RoA track. Endless Nine I've always felt was one of the weaker big Umineko tracks, not that that matters much since the entire soundtrack is great. Good match.

Strange day for me. Kinda expected to vote Sky Tower but it didn't go that way today and I expected OST 7 to win cleanly for me but I had to think on this for a little - a far cry from my thinking Endless Nine was one of the lower tier Umineko tracks to make a contest (actually still might be true lol) while I supported OST7 back in the day. (I... am pretty sure at least, don't feel like breaking out my old records)

Match 1:
PMD1 is actually the first video game I ever completed and I'm greatly nostalgic for it. The original Sky Tower is probably one of my favorite piece of VGM, Imo they did a very good job with this remake, love how they kept the original GBA bass, keeps a familiar feel while the new instruments keep it fresh. Still, I think I prefer the original, I like the characteristic crusty GBA/DS charm it has, gives it a lot of charm (though arguably that's most likely nostalgia).
On the other side, we have Faint Dream ~ Inanimate Dream which sound so intense and intimidating, like most PC-98 final boss songs really (which there are two of this year, not complaining lol). I personally prefer the unused version that has a more unorthodox chorus, but this is still very good (originally wanted to nom that, but while it's in the original Touhou 4 files, it's not accessible by conventional means, too bad.)
This might sound arbitrary (and it is lol), but I'm a huge sucker for PC98 Touhou music, so in the end I went with Faint Dream ~ Inanimate Dream for that reason.
Would have voted original Sky Tower over it though.

Match 2:
Both of these songs feel very atmospheric without being ambient. You can almost imagine the situation these songs play in despite never having heard them in the context of the game they're from, and on top of that they're both bangers.
I'll be blunt and say I went with ElectriCITY. This song is everything I like. Weird experimental electronic songs, breakbeat type drums, bass, and overall dark atmosphere giving song. I like every single second of this.
Partizans feels more alive (if that makes any sense) and hopeful. I think the piano, "windy" type sound and more orchestral feeling gives me that feeling. Some of the drums in this song remind me heavily of Cosmic Eternity from Sonic CD (example: 00:28).
I prefer the more mechanical, cold and darker sounding ElectriCITY than the more upbeat Partizans, but both songs are awesome. Hard match.

ToC Bonus Match:
Would have gone for Luna Ascension if it was the original, but it faces the same problem as Sky Tower for me: "Good remix, but original is better".
Started playing (or rather, reading) Umineko a few days ago, and it got me hooked fairly fast. Can't wait too see where and when all these crazy tracks like miragecoordinator and goldenslaughterer play in game.
Anyways, I really like the use of the piano and flute in that one, as well as how this orchestral sound isn't too deafening unlike most orchestral songs. Bells are a cool addition to the song too imo. This is just... really nice lol, like most Umineko tracks I've heard really. Haven't much to say about it except that it sounds light but exciting.

Overall, great day, all songs were really good. Bracket B had a great start!
